AT&T Galaxy Note Jelly Bean Problems: Battery Life, Lag, No Multi-View

Published

on

Earlier this month, Samsung and AT&T rolled out the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy Note Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to owners which replaced its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a host of new features. Problem is, it looks like the update is causing owners a ton of grief in the form of missing features and issues revolving around lag and battery life.

On May 2nd, just a day after we reported that the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note Android 4.1 Jelly Bean could roll out in May, AT&T and Samsung rolled out the update through Samsung Kies. The update technically arrived on May 3rd but we heard from several people who were able to pull it a day earlier than the announcement date.

Read: AT&T Galaxy Note Jelly Bean Update Now Available.

The update had been a long time coming for a number of reasons. Owners of the original Galaxy Note received their update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean several months prior to the roll out. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, while good, has become an increasingly outdated operating system with not only Android 4.1 Jelly Bean but Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out on shelves. Android 4.1, despite being old, brought a lot of new from Android 4.0 and it was those features, along with a few others, that Galaxy Note owners had been looking forward to.

And finally, just a few short days ago, the update arrived with little warning. As expected, Galaxy Note owners started updating to the latest software. However, from what we’re seeing and hearing, the experience has been far from perfect and owners are currently experiencing a number of major issues with the software update.

There is also another big complaint from AT&T Galaxy Note owners, so big, that it has started a petition. Here is what we’re seeing and hearing from AT&T Galaxy Note owners.

No Multi-Window View

Maybe the biggest and loudest complaint from AT&T Galaxy Note owners is about the lack of the Multi-Window View feature that many thought would be arriving with the update. For good reason. The feature did arrive for the international version of the Galaxy Note. However, it seems that, once again, American carriers have chopped off features, perhaps due to performance reasons.

Multi-Window View was one of the big features on the Galaxy Note 2 and it’s one that Galaxy Note owners on AT&T have been looking forward to as it would stand to keep the phone fresh despite its age. Problem is, it’s not there and there is no word from AT&T on whether or not it will be coming in the future.

While this might shock Galaxy Note owners, it’s not shocking. We saw U.S. carriers pull a similar stunt with the Android 4.1.2 update for the Galaxy S3 which arrived with a Premium Suite of features just about everywhere but the United States. Recently, we saw Sprint update its Galaxy S3 with some of those features which means there is a chance that AT&T could roll out Multi-View in a future update but at this point, users are without it and rightfully steamed.

So steamed, in fact, that a petition to include the software has been started. We doubt that it will force AT&T’s hand but it’s a sign that plenty of AT&T Galaxy Note owners are unhappy about AT&T axing the feature.

Battery Life Problems

Galaxy Note owners are seeing battery life issues with Android 4.1.

Galaxy Note owners are seeing battery life issues with Android 4.1.

Another major issue that Galaxy Note owners are dealing with is severe battery drain. Currently, there are a number of forum posts on just about every prominent forum out there complaining about the battery life of the Galaxy Note after installing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Owners are seeing the device drain completely in just a few hours of use whereas it would hold a more steady charge with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. One owner says that his battery life dropped to 66% after just 20 minutes of use. There is, of course, no way to verify exactly what this user was doing at the time, but it’s apparent that this is not just an isolated incident.

There, will of course, be Galaxy Note owners that don’t see any significant dip in battery life but right now, for many, it’s a major problem.

Lag Issues

AT&T Galaxy Note owners are also complaining about major lag issues with the device after installing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean wherein the device slows down to a crawl. Remember, Jelly Bean is supposed to bring a smoother user interface, not bring the UI to a screeching halt.

This issue actually seems to be a bit more widespread than the battery life issues as many owners are seeing a slowdown from Android 4.0 to Android 4.1. Other owners say that the UI is suffering from a flickering problem as well.

In any event, the interface seems to be unstable at this point and owners are hopeful that AT&T might release a fix to stabilize things.

What’s Next?

There appear to be plenty of owners experiencing issues with the AT&T Galaxy Note Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to go along with the missing Multi-Window View feature. Whether or not AT&T fixes any of these remains to be seen but given the number of complaints about the battery life and lag, we could see AT&T issue a bug fix update at some point in the near future.

it's unclear if the AT&T Galaxy Note will ever get Multi-View.

it’s unclear if the AT&T Galaxy Note will ever get Multi-View.

In the meantime, owners will likely have to rely on the development community for fixes and answers as AT&T typically is not forthright with information about Android updates.

Add telus users to the list. No multi window. Plus complete battery drain in 1hr of subway surfers.

I had a huge problem until I did a factory reset. I am absolutely impressed now. I no longer have any issues. Just be sure to write down whatever apps you want because you will lose them. I’m in love with my Note all over again!

What an absolute joke…after waiting 9 months for the jelly bean update for my i717 this is what they deliver? A lagged out, buggy, feature less version of 4.1.2 that is half the speed and fluidity of ics…I’m also wondering how my handwriting recognition got worse, almost unusable versus the amazingamazingly accurate version from I’ve…after so long of a wait I almost regret even doing the update which basically ruined my phone.

First thing I noticed was it being sooo slooooooowww !

Adam, Adam we’ve tried several times to tell you that it’s always about da money. Yes, it will be fixed, just as soon as Note 3 hits the ground in October or so. Then we AT&T users will be given the chance to “fix” all of our problems for just a mere $250-$300 +. Then rest assured we’ll be fixed and how !!

No mention here about the crappy new keyboard. Predictive text doesn’t work and spelling correction is non-existent. That is my biggest complaint, along with poor battery life. Would love to see Multi-view on the Note but that’s less important than the keyboard, lag, and battery life. Pop-up Video seems to be AT&T’s answer to Multi-view, but it only works using the Notes preinstalled video player. That somewhat defeats the purpose…

My battery life isn’t horrible, but still noticeably worse than ICS. UI is much snappier, but still occasionally lags when memory is low. The big slap in the face is all the missing features. I don’t just mean big things like multi-window. It’s also the little stuff, like the fact the eraser no longer works on Wacom pens. It’s just so half-assed… I will think twice about buying the AT&T variant ever again.

Adam, I hope you have connections with AT&T and Samsung as we would like very much to hear if these issues can and will be addressed? I have about 16+ months left on my contract and when I bought this device last year it was supposedly the cream of the crop. Now less than a year later it feels like we are at the bottom of the trash bin. Yes I know Samsung has new and improved products that were built off of the success of this device (i.e Note 8.0, Galaxy Note 2, etc..) I just wish they would treat first gen owners with a little more respect as oppose to trying to nickel and dime us to keep buying the latest and greatest. If Apple were to release a Phablet in the next 2 years…that might be my next device and I’m a pure android lover.

    • Bigmouth

      05/09/2013 at 11:48 am

Wait… your complaint is Samsung is trying to nickel and dime you, so your solution is to switch to Apple? The same Apple that forces you to buy proprietary cables and gives you iOS updates that make older generation phones unusable?

      • RH

        05/12/2013 at 4:06 pm

When Apple iOS updates come out the phone right before gets ALL the features and the phone before that gets the majority. My son is still using the 3GS and it operates pretty good. And the 4 and the 4S still has great ios support. If Samsung would support their older phones like Apple that would be great. If they don’t, I will wait for another company that will.

Lag is an understatement. 2 or 3 apps running and the phone became unusable. Actually had to do a backup and factory reset. So far that has resolved the slowness issue but many hours wasted to get to that point …

    • Metz

      05/16/2013 at 7:19 am

Did the factory reset resolve the lag issue(s) – and anything else? I know factory-resetting is tedious so I just want to make sure. Thank you, much!

I’ll tell you what’s wrong with it…mine did the same thing! Your charging port is going bad. I just went out this morning, paid $40 for a battery charger where I can take my battery out, plug it into this dinosaur looking thing and plug it into the wall. I am disappointed, to say the least. Watch out and get prepared. I called Samsung, they said I could send it in, it’s under warranty but it would be gone for 2-4 weeks. I run a business and cannot be without my phone for that long. There is a reason I chose this particular one…mini tablet-ish so I can do anything from it.

Backup everything and do a factory reset – this will resolve the performance issues. I know we shouldn’t have to do this but it’s best to prioritise. We can complain later, for now this will get your pre-upgrade performance back.

Are you saying that you did a factory reset, then reinstalled JB? Or just did the reset and you’re living with Gingerbread?

I can’t believe I’m posting this ten days or more after the rollout, and I’m not seeing anything on the Internet about AT&T having fixed it yet..t.

    Hi
Sorry to hear about these issues, I know the fix regarding battery loss.
This loss is due to some of the 4.0 ice cream left running in the back ground, You would need to factory reset without backing up on the phone, “back up external only ”
This information was given from Samsung customer service when I was faced with the problem with the international Note GT-N7000, now it runs smooth and battery back to normal…

Ouch……. I did the update to jelly bean today. Fortunately i am not facing any problems as mentioned above. Yes.. i dont have the multi view… But my battery does not die… Its staying well up compared to ICS and i have no lags or freezing. My phone is faster and the interface is smoother. My swype keyboard and hand recognition works just fine or mayb better. I use Swiftkey for my keyboard so that might be different..

But love to get the Multi View ….

Well let me tell you about MY adventures. Last week, I returned my phone to the AT&T service center because my charging port was getting loose. It also made my phone unrecognized when plugged into the PC. They exchanged my phone with no problem (still within year warranty). Now once I got home, I realized my $50 SkullCandy Mic’d earbuds were no longer working. The mic wasnt picking up, but I could hear the sound on calls. I went into the settings and did a system update. This still didnt fix the mic problem, but I realized if I unplugged then REplugged the earbuds, the mic worked. Why would I want to do that on every call? So I returned to the service center. They tried 3 other phones and they had the same problem. No working mic. So I had to settle & buy a cheap set of earbuds that finally got the mic. (quite unhappy at this point). 2 Days later, this Jellybean update comes out. Its laggy, slow and it takes my battery HOURS to fully charge when it used to take about 30-45 minutes on ICS. You click on an app, & it takes 3 times as long to open, not to mention NO MULTIVIEW! I appreciate the features that came with JB 4.1, but I am unhappy with what I lost in functionality & speed. I was already pist about reading about how the Japanese version comes with a TV tuner, as well as radio tuner. Also the European version having similar features. This stripped-down American version is borderline trash and if we dont demand more, we’ll ALWAYS get less. They could have put in a RADIO tuner fer cryin’ out loud! HTC phones have always come thru with their features and if THEY get into the phablet market, Samsung may have a problem!

For those who say a wipe and restore will “fix” these issue…ive done that twice…still laggy and slow…not too mention the fact most “fixes” are disabling or removing most of the key features ie google now…haha this is laughable that an update to bring features, albeit missing most of the good ones, must be stripped away simply to get back to what stock ics speed and fluidity was…I agree completely with those above about the keyboard…my question is why in the hell would they remove auto correction. ..this blows my mind…not only stripping away new features but stripping away great features from a prior os. The battery life is so bad you either choose not to use it at all or remove any features, disable all functions, dim the screen ect just to make it thru half a day with a phone…I might be wrong but doesnt this defeat the so called smart of smartphones?

  24. ckh14

    05/11/2013 at 10:03 pm

One more thing I forgot…does it piss anybody else off for the fact that yoi have to limit, alter, or mod the phone or your use of it just to have a relatively decent phone? Like the classic…limit how many apps you install…or turn this off or that off…reset the phone…root it and flash a new os…isnt the point of an update to enhance the features and functions of the phone? I detest the notion that to have my phone run or have any battery life whatsoever I have to clear my ram, limit my use, lower brightness…dont even think of using a live wallpaper or widget…thats freaking built into the stock os…having to offset the absolute crap update by handicapping the use case of which I bought and once used my note for on ice cream sandwich is probably my biggest annoyance with this whole debacle. Not being able to use my note and utilize its features absolutely defeats the point of even owning the note…forget multi window for now just make my freaking phone work like it shoud…like it DID…plus if sam and att screw up or halfass the update this bad for thr phone that started the entire large screen fad…imagine how bad the i717 would be if they had put multi window in the phone….shoot it probably wouldnt even turn on haha…sad really…arent we all thrilled after the 9 month delay

    • Metz

      05/16/2013 at 7:36 am

I wholeheartedly agree with you! My AT&T contract expiration date is not coming soon enough…just like the UPDATE — if you even call it that! It’s more like a DOWNGRADE. I jumped to AT&T (after more than 10 yrs with T-Mobile) just for the Galaxy Note. Had I waited 2 weeks I would still have been a happy T-Mobile customer and laughing at all of these comments. Instead … I’m being laughed at!

    • Mike

      05/18/2013 at 9:11 pm

I am SOOO with you on this! It infuriates me to be treated this way. The only explanation I can imagine is that they are trying to push people to the next upgrade. I’m sure they know the exact numbers — how many people just gave up and upgraded instead of waiting for Jelly Bean, how many people are now buying a new phone instead of living with the crippled version just released, etc. It really makes my blood boil. I wish the regulators would hold AT&T accountable on this kind of crap.

I feel really fortunate that Kies is so buggy that it wouldn’t update my Note on either of our household laptops. I recently did a factory reset on my Note and it has never worked better… all day battery and smooth. I won’t upgrade until I hear reports that these issues are fixed and everybody is ecstatic with the JB Note. Given the life cycle point that the original Note is at, I doubt that that is a realistic outcome… I’ll likely just wait for Note3, or possibly get a Windows phone… talk about smooth! If Samsung would make a Windows ‘Note’ phone with S Pen, I’d be on board in a hurry.

  26. Phil

    05/12/2013 at 7:14 pm

watched a few videos on youtube. got my Note rooted, installed Titanium Backup, did a full backup, followed with Factory reset and fully restored with Titanium Backup… battery life seemed a bit better but still not comparable to ICS. Also turned off bunch of google sync items which probably helped more.

my advice is, if you haven’t updated to jellybean. Don’t!

now I’m seeing commercials by AT&T offering all new phones at 1/2 off this weekend with trade-in and new 2 year contract… right after they released jellybean for our Note… hmmm…

    • Mike

      05/18/2013 at 9:16 pm

Exactly. It is all calculated to maximize churn — more customers upgrading and starting new contracts = more money for them, even if it means screwing the customers in the process. Remember back when you could buy something and count on it to last for a while? My first cell phone lasted longer than my last three combined!

I switched to AT&T 2 months ago from Verizon, I feel both have good customer service but Verizon is better, also the coverage seemed better with Verizon. I will drop AT&T after the contract (1 long year) sooooo glad I did not sign up for 2! The recent update has slowed down my Galaxy Note tremendously and if I notice this then heavy users must be extremely disappointed. Verizons apps etc seem to run much smoother then AT&T, their web site is also much easier to use then AT&T’s heck AT&T’s back up app will not even work on my phone even though it says it is compatible Verizons back up much much better. I only switched to AT&T wireless because I have U-verse (which I love) well anyway the update is bad. I hope I can uninstall it????

I haven’t experienced any of the problems mentioned here. Battery life is the same as it was with ICS and the phone is much smoother overall. Zero problems downloading the update via Kies. I wish multi window was included in the features, but if it would have held back performance, I’m glad they excluded it, Just my opinions.

JB greatly reduced my available ram after the update to my Note, I believe by opening numerous apps (20-ish) in the background processes. My solution was to start in the Developer Options (Settings) by turning off both the Animator duration and Transition animation, followed by limiting the Background processes to “no background process”. Then I turned off all location services under the settings (3), then under the application manager disabled everything I didn’t absolutely need (emails, Samsung push, all superfluous ATT apps etc). This seems to keep my ram at 500-ish and allows for acceptable functioning with the Note. Tips; 1) when disabling apps some require an uninstall of updates followed by the disabling whereas other can simply be disabled. 2) while disabling clear caches and data (apps can be reset if need be) and lastly if you restart the phone you may have to turn background process limit back to “no background process”. Phone not rooted and factory reset did nothing to curb the JB open app issue. G.L all.

To me this ordeal is a scam…a fraud perpetrated on us note 1 owners as a ploy to buy the note 2…I say this for a few reasons that I have previously mentioned in my above posts but will reiterate…att had nearly a year with the jelly bean source codes, which by the way doesnt differ much from the ice source codes which they have been tooling with for 2 years now minimum…in that years time they chose to install att apps which for the 1st time actually run at startup sucking up ram, which never happened on ics or variants prior stripping away valuable ram space and slowing the note…they stripped away multi window, autocorrect in keyboards, left the s pen version 1.x apk from gingerbread which I discovered in the coding, which is why jb brought massive issues with handwriting recognition and transcription as they are basically incompatible apks trying to run on newer os, stripped away most gestures and sensor functions of which note 2 has, that are compatible with note 1…all except s pen sensor…things like photo preview hovering and video slide preview via s pen which note 1 is capable but left out intentionally…they also altered the battery code, which as of today I havent been able to pinpoint in the code but know it must be there as the only addition to ics was 60fps ui and google now, neither of which would cause this severity of drainage, so it has to be a change in either the calibration code or battery controller code…they also stripped quick command funtions which is essentially an app…left us with voice talk rather than s voice which is now version 4.x apk not our 1 or 2.x apk variants…and the list goes on, outdated apks and functions mixed with a new os, I believe, is a main source of many of our problems…all of which are either intentional or att employs the stupidest coders on earth, which I know fora fact is not the case….this is why I believe the issues we are seeing now after the jelly bean update are a marketing sabotage ploy for sales and contract renewals…as it just so happened that our update was preceded by an eol (end of life) status and pulling note 1 off the shelves. They essentially updated our note with a time bomb software code, believing that the excitement of the looooong awaited jb update would wear off and these annoyances would be enough for us to purchase note 2 or possibly note 3 in 4 months upon release, thereby ending their obligation and securing millions in sales and contract revenue. I mean, what other explanation is there, for a phone with as much power and technology as the note has, to overnight, go from a state of the art, flagship, to a slow, laggy, featureless shell of its former self in a single click on kies?

  34. ckh14

    05/21/2013 at 2:14 am

Ps fred…multiwindow would not have hindered the note in any way…android runs by keeping programs loaded in cache and ram, which is the op en apos slide bar introduced in ics….the only difference is the ability to see and use 2 of these apps that already refresh their data reguardless, simultaneously…and not to argue but if yiu dont see the difference in performance and battery life, you may not use your note as most of us here do…ie as the microcomputer it was designed to be….I typically run several apps simultaneously, doing emails, video streaming, polaris office, music and gaming ect several hours a day….well at least I used to be able to before jb….now im lucky if I can keep it running for calls or text, as it absolutely sucks the battery life with any use, much less the heavy paces I used to be able to put it thru….try running a pop up video with internet in background then opening texting app…watch how long everything takes and watch your battery fall 40% in 20 mins….att is a joke

After I updated mine it did lag really bad. The battery drained quickly as well. And then this morning my phone wouldn’t even power on it just sits and vibrates about every 3 seconds while it is on charge. It wont even do a factory reset they even tried at an AT&T store to do it it stumped them. Has anyone else had this problem?

This by far has been the worst phone situation that i have ever experienced. I have been a proud first gen user since it release, but i am now seriously reconsidering this whole att and samsung thing. This is crazy. I feel like i am using dial up! Every single feature on my device is running a snails pace. Well minus the fluent live back ground! WTF! I don’t pay over a $100 bucks a month for crap service!

Absolutely unacceptable!! My phone went from fully charged to %30 in 5 hours and I barely used it.
I called AT&T, the lady asked me to do a “master reset” but no promise that this will bring it back to the performance prior to JB upgrade!!!
I think AT&T is doing this intentionally to force Note owners into upgrading the phone. Why not, they feel they can get away with it.
I still have over a year in my contract. Will NEVER contract with AT&T again!!

Btw to those experiencing screen lags and not a smooth system..download titanium backup and get rid of att bloatware. It makes phone really smooth except some keyboard lag but battery drainage still a biggggg problem.

This is ridiculous! I’m losing 1% battery every 2 minutes by simply browsing and reading this post with power savings on. I’m done with android..once the contract with att is over I’m leaving att too. Months of prep time and this is what they come with

humbled to have a phone with ‘suck the life out of me’ features.
The factory reset is a MUST.
Charging problems? Try new cable.. worked for me.

I had issues also until I saw your post and did a factory reset. No lagging and battery doesnt drain nearly as fast.

Does anyone else have issue with TONS of applications running all the time? I go in and close them each time I start up my phone. My charging port is bad so I purchased a charger that requires me to take my battery out and charge it. There is a lot of shutdown and start up with this practice! Not to mention, not very convenient.

Id like to thank all of you for the helpful information on the jelly bean update.Learning from my past mistakes, I’ve aways made it a habit to research everything before making changes…So I am very thankful for all your help in my decision…It would have only added to my problem with my changing port…Im having the same problem as mentioned above…It was 10 month after i purchased my Samsung note i717 I started having problems with my battery charging and staying charged, it drained within 2hrs and I wasn’t even using it. .I made sure to install an app killer..but the problem still accured. .After 2hrs on the phone with ATT, they told me they were going to send me another battery and if this did not correct the problem they would send me a refurbished phone..I was not thrilled at thought of getting a refurbished phone…They ended up sending me a refurb and now that my warranty has ended Im having the same problems with the charging port again.. This is reallylupsetting and frustrating. .So I had to buy extra batteries and a wall charger to carry with me just to have my phone working..My thoughts are this is a faulty part on Samsung phones.. I’ve experienced the same problems on other Samsung models..I love Samsung phones but I keep having different problems with every model I’ve owned..

Definitely I agree with all of you. Its frustrating with all this battery issues, especially when I updated to JB, is a disaster. I called Samsung and they asked me to disable all syncs on all email accounts, check off power saving, turn off my wifi etc. etc.

Ya 4.1 jelly bean is a big problem for note at&t.
battery life is a bigger issue., phone becomes slower and slower, bad performance of games and other apps..and the main problem is you can’t use the standard apps like whatsapp, Skype etc.the account is not created in it..

    What’s the solution?

I’ve left at&t and switched to Verizon. I’m now using the s4 and couldn’t be happier!

Wow! I had no idea that I was not alone. After the upgrade, my phone is so incredibly slow. I will charge it to full capacity, and in three hours of basic use, the battery is almost dead. There are also times my apps freeze or I get “stuck” on the home screen and I actually have to take the back off the phone and remove the battery for a “hard reboot” in order to get my phone to even respond. I loved the phone when I bought it. I left my iPhone behind. The Note was amazing. But now it freezes when I simply want to place a call and I have to wait sometimes for almost a full minute before the phone app responds. It’s disgusting to spend so much and be promised so much but to receive so little. At least when I upgraded my IOS, I might not have gotten all the new features but I never experienced a basic ruining of my iPhone. And in my line of work, I have to keep all my texts for a period of 7 years for legal reasons. If I do a factory restore, I will lose the texts. So I have no choice but to live with this crap phone for another six months or shell out hundreds of dollars to upgrade before my contract is up.

Hi from Switzerland! Similar issues to report from this country. The deceiving experience with Samsung started with the update from Gingerbread to ICS 4.03, which transformed my Note into a toaster, draining the battery to nill in a couple of hours. If you want warm pants when skiing, then get this update. Then once again spending my time in researching in forums until I got old. Finally, after 9 months came the ICS 4.04, that solved at least the battery issue. Today I’m asked to update my Note to Jelly Bean 4.1 and I learned my lesson: never again install updates without checking 1st other’s experience. Samsung has never been a real master in creating software, see Kies e.g. . I wonder how Samsung rolls out such rubbish to their public. Better would be to do nothing. The comment of my son: see Dad? You’d better taken an iPhone!
