Verizon HTC One Details Trickle Out, But They’re Confusing

Published

on

Earlier today, new information regarding the rumored Verizon HTC One surfaced, information that indicated that Verizon could be closing in on an announcement and a release date for the all-metal phone. That same tipster though has released some new information in regards to the Verizon HTC One release and some of it has only added to the confusion surrounding the device.

In February, HTC announced the HTC One, its new flagship smartphone. The device comes equipped with a 4.7-inch 1080p display, quad-core processor, Ultrapixel camera, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the new HTC Sense 5. It’s available on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in the United States where it’s compatible with their 4G LTE networks. Needless to say, it’s an impressive and enticing phone.

However, many consumers have been holding out for the rumored Verizon HTC One, a device that has emerged as a possibility in the past but one that remains unannounced. Earlier today, the device picked up steam when noted HTC leakster @LlabTooFeR exclaimed that Verizon customers would be able to get their hands on the HTC One in the “near future.”

In the hours since, he has elaborated on his deceleration and unfortunately, the new information that has trickled out has done nothing to clear up the confusion that has surrounded this device since the beginning.

Launch Possible on May 22nd

@LlabTooFeR, a notorious HTC developer and leakster, has generally been accurate with this information in regards to HTC software updates and devices. In fact, it was him that leaked the initial spec sheet for the rumored DLX_PLUS which is thought to be Verizon’s version of the HTC One.

Earlier today, he remarked that Verizon customers could see the device arrive in the “near future.” However, when pressed further, he has divulged a number of different rumors in regards to the device. The first, that it could possibly arrive on May 22nd at Verizon’s event at CTIA 2013 in Las Vegas. He doesn’t confirm it and we haven’t yet seen any rumors suggesting that the announcement will be for the HTC One. In fact, many think the announcement will be for the Nokia Lumia 928, a heavily rumored Windows Phone 8 device.

Release in 2-3 Months?

The May 22nd launch date remains up in the air, as does the device’s release date. In terms of a release date, he believes that Verizon could release the device in two to three months which would mean early July or early August. He also says that it “definitely” won’t be coming before May 29th, which is just a week removed from Verizon’s CTIA announcement.

This is the confusing part. By the time July and August roll around, the HTC One will be an older device, at least in smartphone years. It would be extremely odd to see the carrier release the exact same HTC One as the rest of the carriers that late. As we’ve seen though, Verizon was perfectly fine with announcing the Galaxy S4 in March, and not releasing it until the end of May. Still, that was for an unreleased device. The HTC One has already been on shelves for a number of weeks. So at this point, while we may be closer to a launch and release, the situation is still extremely confusing.

32GB Model

@LLabTooFeR mentions that he believes the device will come in 32GB form. That doesn’t mean it won’t come with 64GB but it does seem to point to at least 32GB. That would be 16GB more than the Droid DNA and the Samsung Galaxy S4 on Verizon and it would fall in line with what T-Mobile and Sprint are offering with their HTC One.

AT&T currently holds an exclusive over the 64GB HTC One and there is still no telling exactly when the carrier will be relinquishing its exclusive rights, if it even does at all.

Name Could Change

He also suggests that he thinks that the device will arrive as the HTC One but admits that the name could potentially change. Remember, we’ve heard rumors that this phone could potentially be called the Droid DNA 2.

Again, if Verizon releases a device called the HTC One in July or August, we’d be extremely shocked. We’d be even more shocked if this device arrives with hardware, and software, that mirrors the devices currently out on shelves. The timing just seems off.

Verizon Responds to Rumors, Sort Of

HTC and Verizon haven’t confirmed anything yet but that doesn’t mean they aren’t following along like everyone else. Earlier today, in response to a tweet about the Verizon HTC One rumors, Verizon tweeted back saying that it has a better tip than those rumors, offering up a website for users to check for the latest information on its devices.

This doesn’t point to anything to being close, but it’s the first time that we’ve seen the carrier openly respond to anything HTC One related.

Confusion Reigns

At this point, while we may be closer to a launch, we’re not any closer to solving the mystery of the Verizon HTC One. It’s future, including release date and specifications remain unclear, and we still aren’t sure if this device will arrive as an HTC One variant or a variant of the upcoming HTC Butterfly 2.

With May 22nd on the way, consumers are likely hoping for an end to this confusion, but at this point, there is no guarantee that we’ll see HTC and Verizon debut the phone at that event.
