HTC One Nexus Edition Not in the Works

Published

on

While a Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition will be heading to the shelves of Google Play in June, there are currently no plans for an HTC One Nexus Edition, this according to HTC itself, comments that have seemingly dashed the hopes of those hoping for a vanilla version of the HTC One.

Earlier today on stage at Google I/O, Google announced that it would stocking a Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition, possibly also called Google Edition, in late June. The device will be coming with the same hardware as the current Samsung Galaxy S4 which means 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP camera, slim and lightweight design, and more.

Don't expect an HTC One Nexus Edition from Google.

Don’t expect an HTC One Nexus Edition from Google.

It will be coming unlocked to the networks of AT&T and T-Mobile with support for 4G LTE data speeds, something that the current Nexus smartphone, the Nexus 4, does not have.

Something else that it will have, that the other Galaxy S4 models won’t, is stock Android software. This means that the device, like the Nexus devices, will have vanilla Android software, void of Samsung’s fingerprints. In this case, it’s vanilla Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

It also means that the device will be updated by Google, and not carriers, which means swifter Android updates. From the looks of things though, the Galaxy S4 will be the only “Nexus Edition” of a major Android phone not called Nexus.

Those holding out for a Nexus version of the other big name Android smartphone of 2013, the HTC One, likely won’t get the chance to buy one as HTC has seemingly dashed those dreams right out of the gate.

In comments made to SlashGear, an HTC employee confirmed that it is currently not working on an HTC One Nexus Edition with vanilla Android software. This doesn’t necessarily mean that an HTC One Nexus won’t come in the future but it certainly means that consumers should not expect one at any point in the near future.

This means that consumers will be stuck with the original HTC One, the device that offers not only Android Jelly Bean, but the Sense 5 user interface over the top.

Rather disappointing! With standard 32 or 64gb ROM memory it would be the perfect phone for a Vanilla Android OS with NO Sense overlay as not everyone wants Sense. This will HTC as Google will be the one to push the updates on OS. HTC has a bad reputation on updating their devices with the latest Andriod OS!!!

Well if HTC presently doesn’t have plans to make a Google edition HTC One, they better have those plans ASAP. There is no better place to do battle with the GS4 GE than the play store. I mean such a high caliber device as the HTC One running pure JB 4.2.2 and a chance of having updates directly from Google is a win win for both the buyer and HTC. Besides it will be sale malpractice for HTC to let Samsung have such a huge sale platform to themselves. Okay I understand the importance for HTC to try and peddle their Sense UI, but what good does it do the company if pushing sense only HTC One will cause them to loose a huge segment of ppl who will otherwise buy a GS4 GE instead of the HTC One GE.

Current contract up in August. If there is a HTC one running vanilla android available then that will likely be my next phone. If not then probably the S4 Google edition. Take note HTC.
