Verizon iPhone 5 Price Mysteriously Slashed

Published

on

It appears that a price change could be on the horizon for the Verizon iPhone 5 as the carrier mysteriously cut the price of the iPhone 5 down to $100 on-contract, a $100 discount on its current price, and then quickly bumped the price back up again to the normal $199.99.

The iPhone 5, despite arriving in September, has seen its price remain fairly constant with carriers and Apple offering it for $199.99 and up. The 16GB model typically stays at $199.99, 32GB at $299.99 and 64GB at $399.99 all the way up until a new iPhone arrives. However, it appears that at least one carrier may be offering a bit of a deal in the future.

According to AppleInsider, the price of the Verizon iPhone 5 was mysteriously slashed today down to $99.99 on-contract. That’s $100 off the normal price of the iPhone 5. However, Verizon quickly corrected the price drop and the device is currently sitting at its typical on-contract price of $199.99, a price that consumers are likely familiar with.

It’s not entirely clear as to why the price drop briefly occurred, whether it was a mistake or if Verizon has something up its sleeve for the future. The iPhone 5S isn’t expected to arrive until sometime this fall, with next month’s WWDC 2013 currently rumored to be the launching pad for Apple’s new piece of iOS software, iOS 7.

Previously, rumors suggested that the iPhone 5S would be coming sometime in the summer, sometime in July. A Verizon price drop, especially one that’s permanent, could definitely point to a new iPhone coming sooner rather than later. However, it’s unclear if this deal, if real, would be permanent or if it would be a temporary price cut.

The listing does specifically state that the device is “Now” $99.99 which seems to hint at a permanent price drop but at this point, Verizon has refused comment on the mysterious price cut.

The iPhone 5 is now in the midst of some serious competition with the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 arriving on shelves. Both devices feature high-end hardware with some powerful software and should be serious competitors to not only the iPhone 5 but also the iPhone 5S which should replace the iPhone 5 at some point this year.
