Sony Xperia Z U.S. Release Coming Soon

Published

on

The Sony Xperia Z, one of the high-end Android smartphones to emerge in the first half of 2013, is heading to a U.S. carrier in the “coming weeks” according to Sony CEO Kaz Hirai with T-Mobile being the leading candidate thanks to a number of leaks.

At CES 2013, Sony announced the Sony Xperia Z and the Sony Xperia ZL, its two flagship devices that have arrived on carriers around the world. The Xperia Z and Xperia ZL have arrived unlocked in the U.S. while regional carrier Cinciantti Bell chose to offer the Xperia ZL, a more compact version of the Xperia Z. Now, it appears that the Xperia Z will be coming to a U.S. carrier though Sony remains mum about the carrier or carriers.

At the D11 conference today, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed that the Xperia Z, which features a glass water and dust resistant design, would be coming to a U.S. carrier in the “coming weeks.” He did no say which carrier it would be but all signs point to T-Mobile USA as the likely destination for the device, thanks to a number of leaks that have emerged in recent weeks.

The announcement is said to be coming shortly though no date was given. AT&T is remains a possibility thanks to a close partnership with Sony that has produced devices like the Xperia Ion, but the evidence suggests that T-Mobile, at the very least, will be getting the Sony Xperia Z in the near future.

The Sony Xperia Z is one of the top phones on the market but it will enter the U.S. arena facing some stiff competition. The HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 are both already out on shelves and those come in addition to the upcoming Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Editions, not to mention the iPhone 5 and presumed iPhone 5S.

Whether or not Japan’s best-selling phone can compete in a saturated market remains to be seen, but those looking for an alternative to the big name phones in the U.S. will certainly find one in the Xperia Z, a device that combines a 5-inch 1080p display, sleek glass design, 13MP camera, Android Jelly Bean and minimal manufacturer UI.

Lets go, Been holding off buying a new phone since late march just for the Xperia Z. Hopefully they start taking pre-orders soon and give early adopters a special incentive to get one.

I bought this phone 2 days ago. It’s supposed to be shipped in two weeks. Im from Lima, Perú. I hope I can use it here but my biggest concern is if the US version has the “Sudden Death” issue. I’ve been reading a lot of people complaning about it, but in Europe. Haven’t found any US forum talking about it. Does anybody knows if Sony has already fix the problem before launching the US version?
