It appears that a Sony Xperia Z Nexus, also known as a Sony Xperia Z Google Edition, might actually arrive later on this year, joining the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus (Google Edition) and HTC One Nexus (Google Edition) on the Google Play Store.
Earlier this week, we heard a rumor that suggested that Sony was prepping a Nexus version of its flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z, in an effort to join HTC and Samsung, both of which have made their intention of selling Nexus versions of their flagship smartphones known. And while nothing is confirmed yet, Android Central is throwing its weight behind the rumor, suggesting that the Sony Xperia Z Nexus is indeed a real device and that it will be coming to shelves this year.
Unfortunately, besides the device’s likely specifications which will be based on the regular Sony Xperia Z, details about the device’s launch remain relatively unknown. Even \with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus and HTC One Nexus on their way to the Google Play Store later on this month, June 26th to be exact, the Sony Xperia Z Nexus still is without a launch date, official or rumored.
July has been mentioned as a possible release month but that remains unconfirmed and likely will be until we get closer to an official announcement from Google or Sony.
It’s also not clear how the device will handle software. Like the others, it’s possible that it will be pure vanilla without interference, so that means that Sony’s Bravia Engine features may not be on board. It’ll also likely have a stock camera and of course, the regular old Android user interface. It’s also likely to have updates straight from Google and a release on the U.S. Play Store only, at least at first.
Both the HTC One Nexus and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus are U.S. exclusives though as we’ve been told, it’s possible that they could spread to other Google Play Stores in the future.
The Sony Xperia Z features some fantastic hardware including a 5-inch 1080p display, glass design that is both water and dust resistant, 13MP camera, quad-core processor and a microSD card slot for expanded storage.
