Instagram Coming to Windows Phone, BlackBerry Before Google Glass

Though Instagram has made no promises of delivering a client to BlackBerry or Windows Phone in the immediate future, the social photo sharing network is saying that an official Instagram app for those platforms would come before one would be available for the new Google Glass platform.

This should be good news for owners and potential owners of devices running the BlackBerry 10 operating system or Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 mobile OS, which currently lack an official Instagram client though there are a number of third-party apps available on Windows Phone that tap into Instagram’s services.

instagram-iconOfficial apps are currently only available on Android and Apple’s iOS platforms. Instagram is a free service that’s operated and owned by Facebook, and more importantly the service added video sharing capabilities for short video clips.

In an interview with Fast Company, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom revealed that his company will be going for the biggest pieces of the pie first.

“We’re not yet on Blackberry or Windows Phone, so I think those will come before Google Glass,” Systrom says, noting that Google Glass is not for everyone and consumers may not take to the geeky eyewear.

“I’m not saying those will come anytime soon,” Systrom quickly cautioned. “I’m just saying that in order of priority, the way we evaluate where to expand to is really simply where our users are, and where the growth is. It took us a very long time to get to Android.”

Instagram had been rumored to be coming to both Windows Phone and BlackBerry for some time now, though there still hasn’t been any announcement yet.

And while Instagram is cautious about developing for Google Glass, others are not. Twitter and Facebook are both releasing services and clients for Google’s emerging wearable computing platform.
