HTC One Android 4.2 U.S. Release: 5 Things to Know

Published

on

Earlier this week, after weeks of rumor and speculation, the HTC One Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update finally rolled out to owners of the flagship device, replacing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the device’s operating system. Unsurprisingly, the software did not roll out to owners in the United States, leaving HTC One users on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile scratching their heads.

In April, the HTC One debuted with a number of big time features including a 4.7-inch 1080p display, quad-core processor, full metal design, Ultrapixel camera, LTE data speeds, and the new Sense 5 which includes the new HTC BlinkFeed and HTC Zoe. It also, oddly enough, arrived with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, an OS that has been around since July of last year. The decision was a bit puzzling given than the HTC One’s rival, the Samsung Galaxy S4, arrived with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which was released back in November.

In the weeks since its launch, HTC One owners around the world began to eat up rumors in regards to the device’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update though HTC itself remained silent about the update and its timing. Originally, we had heard May or June though those fell through. Finally, earlier this week, the update started to roll out to owners of the HTC One, select owners at least.

HTC One owners in Taiwan and owners of the dual-SIM HTC One in China begun receiving their upgrades to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, signifying the start of a massive roll out around the globe. One place where the update hasn’t rolled out yet is the United States, a region that figures to close to last in terms of timing.

With HTC One owners in the U.S. looking for answers, it’s now time to take a look at the most important things to know about the upcoming HTC One Android 4.2 U.S. release.

HTC USA: HTC One Android 4.2 Update Coming ASAP

HTC no longer gives out timing for updates and thus, we had no way of knowing that the HTC One Android 4.2 update would be deployed to international owners yesterday. Unfortunately, carriers in the U.S. are in the same business as HTC and tend to play their update cards close to their chest and that means that release dates for AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile should be scarce.

The only tidbit we have right now, in regards to the U.S. release, comes from HTC USA who claims that the company is “working to deploy Android 4.2.2 as quickly as possible.”

That means that the HTC One Android 4.2 update release in the U.S. is completely wide open and could come at any time. We don’t expect HTC to offer any specific details in regards to the update and we don’t think carriers will say anything until the release arrives.

U.S. Updates Will Be Different

We’ve seen the change log for the international and dual-SIM variants of the HTC One and while most of that will likely arrive for HTC One owners in the United Stares, owners should anticipate some differences when the update comes along.

The Android 4.2 updates in the U.S. will likely be different from each other.

The Android 4.2 updates in the U.S. will likely be different from each other.

What those differences might be is unclear but carriers typically put their own mark on software updates so we should see some enhancements and bug fixes unique to AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile devices.

It’s also possible that a feature could be cut out, something that we saw happen with the Android 4.1.2 update for Galaxy S3 owners in the United States. American Android updates are hard to predict so HTC One owners will want to remain optimistic.

Sprint Likely First

Some educated guesses can be made about the timing of the HTC One Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update though. Owners of the Sprint HTC One should expect to be first in line when it comes to the update. Sprint has been doing a great job of getting its devices updated much faster than the competition and that trend will more than likely continue with the HTC One.

AT&T Likely Last

We could see a Verizon HTC One at the Verizon announcement.

The Verizon HTC One should run Android 4.2 out of the box.

On the other end of the spectrum is AT&T who typically is next to last in line thanks to Verizon. Unfortunately, the Verizon HTC One isn’t out on shelves yet so that means that AT&T will more than likely be the last major HTC One carrier to the HTC One Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update.

Typically, AT&T’s updates come weeks after updates from the likes of Sprint and T-Mobile USA, the latter of which is generally squeezed in the middle as far as timing is concerned.

Verizon HTC One Will Have It Stock

Those looking at buying the Verizon HTC One won’t have to wait for an upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Why? Because all signs point to having Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on board, out of the box, when it arrives.

In fact, the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update is thought to be a reason why the device isn’t on shelves, despite the carrier making it official and attaching a summer release date.

I calculate 235.5 hours per month, or almost 60 hours per week. More than just a few hours

Re: HTC One Verizon release: I was in a Verizon store tonight and a super nice employee asked me if I had any questions. I said, “Yes, but I bet you won’t have the answer….When is the HTC One coming to Verizon?”. The employee moved closer, speaking quietly so other employees wouldn’t hear, and said, “Looks like it’s going to be August. That’s what all the Verizon employees think.”
