Nexus 7 Deals Arrive as Nexus 7 2 Rumors Swirl

Published

on

With Nexus 7 2 rumors swirling, retailers have dropped the price of the current Nexus 7 tablet from its familiar price tag, slashing up to $50 off the price that consumers have been familiar with since the 7-inch slate emerged from hiding alongside Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in July of last year.

Retailers Staples and Office Max have dropped the price of the Nexus 7 from its usual price points of $199.99 and $249.99. The 16GB Nexus 7, which is typically listed for $199.99, has dropped to $179.99 through both of the retailers while the 32GB Nexus 7 has fallen down $50 to a price point of $199.99. Both are discounts from the prices listed on the Google Play Store where Google still has the Nexus 7 variants listed at their usual price points.

The price cuts come at an interesting time for the Nexus 7 as rumors of a successor have swirled, teasing consumers with a possible launch sometime in the next few weeks.

While Google has yet to confirm anything, rumors suggest the company is gearing up to introduce a new Nexus 7 tablet, possibly dubbed Nexus 7 2 or Nexus 7 HD, sometime in July. The device is said to be made by Asus and leaks point to a device that should have a number of significant upgrades over the current Nexus 7 model.

Nexus 7 2 rumors point to a device that keeps the 7-inch display but tacks on 1080p resolution, a 5MP camera in the rear unlike the Nexus 7, a faster processor that looks to be the Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU from Qualcomm, and 4G LTE data speeds that should be compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile and possibly Verizon as well.

The Nexus 7 2 launch is rumored for July.

The device has been rumored to have a different price point than the current Nexus 7 though that is unlikely given Google’s insistence on keeping its Nexus devices unlocked at competitive prices.

These deals from Office Depot and Staples aren’t necessarily a guarantee of a Nexus 7 2 launch in July but they are signs that something could be brewing over at Google.

Google typically releases its new Nexus hardware alongside new software and with Android 4.3 heavily rumored to be out soon, it could be that we see the Nexus 7 2 replace the Nexus 7 soon.

Thanks for this “update” Adam. It’s not like we have 300 blogs already informing us of this “breaking news” every 5 minutes.

Sheesh I just want some REAL update for a change.
