LG Optimus G2 to Arrive as LG G2

Just ahead of an August launch of its next flagship, LG has announced that it will shift the branding on all of its upcoming high-end smartphones.

According to the PR announcement, the device that the company has teased in video ads will be known as the LG G2. That name stands in stark contrast to the LG Optimus G2 moniker that we had expected the device to come launch with next month.

LG says that it’ll be positioning the G brand as a high-end lifestyle brand for it’s more expensive devices. According to Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG, “Our vision is to make LG’s newest G devices synonymous with excellence, raising the bar even further for the ultimate in user experience.”

Lower end LG smartphones with 4:3 displays will go by the name Vu going forward. LG won’t be going back to posthumously rename the devices that it has already launched.

With just a month to go before LG showcases its updated flagship, a lot of the specifications on the LG G2 have already been leaked. If the information shared by Engadet and leaked by YouTube user 4Leakz is correct, the LG G2 will attempt to push the boundaries of the company’s smartphone design with a few notable features.

These features include a voice recognition system that is always on and always listening. This system would allow users to have instant access to verbal commands without the need to push a button or open an application.

The LG G2 is also believed to have a custom-built camera interface that might make it easier for users to capture their photos as quickly and as easily as possible. Just like the LG Nexus 4, the LG G2 will drop all physical buttons in favor of having digital versions featured on the lower part of the device’s display.

Recent teasers posted to LG’s YouTube page also seem to hint at the possibility of there being some form of optical image stabilization built into the device. With this technology, users can capture photos and videos that don’t have some of the disorienting movements that smartphones without optical image stabilization do.

LG is also expected to attempt to top the internal specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and HTC One with a speedy Snapdragon 800 processor. That’s in contrast to the slightly slower Snapdragon 600 processor that ships in those devices.
