iOS 7 Beta Testers Behaving Badly

Published

on

The iOS 7 beta 4 release is still up in the air as Apple deals with the fallout from a hack that led to taking the developer center offline. As users wait for a new version of the iOS 7 beta, some users are taking to social media to complain about IOS 7 beta bugs they hope are fixed in the iOS 7 beta 4 update, and others are leaving bad reviews on apps because the apps don’t work on iOS 7.

The problem is bad enough on the app store that some developers are actually including notes that say, their app is not compatible with the iOS 7 beta.

While developers using the iOS 7 beta to prepare their apps for the iOS 7 release this fall are surely not talking about it on app reviews and on Twitter, users that paid $5 to $8 to register their device with a developer account without understanding the risks and responsibilities that come with beta testing aren’t bashful about complaining.

As users wait for the iOS 7 beta 4 release, users forget the rules of using the beta and are leaving bad app store reviews.

When we shared how to try the iOS 7 beta early we also warned users that some apps might not work and that there would be issues, going so far as to list 5 Reasons to Skip the iOS 7 beta, but the bad behavior from beta testers is still on full display.

iOS 7 beta testers are surely frustrated with a bug that prevents some incoming calls from ringing on the iPhone, apps that crash and general instability, but that’s what they signed up for.

With that in mind here are five examples of iOS 7 beta testers behaving badly.

One Star Review from iOS 7 Beta Tester

iTunes user GoSpinBoy leaves a one star review on PokerStars because the app crashes on iOS 7 beta 3.

More Lost Stars on an iOS 7 App Store Review

Some iOS 7 beta users aren’t able to grasp that there will be apps that don’t work right. This user leaves a three star review for the app that is the only reason he still uses an iPhone.

iOS 7 Crashes and Oddities

The iOS 7 beta 3 doesn’t deliver perfect performance, but it is a major overhaul of the way iOS looks and it is a beta, so it is to be expected. Here we see a user second guess his decision to use the iOS 7 beta. Thankfully there is an easy way to downgrade from the iOS 7 beta to iOS 6.

When Apple is pushing out new iOS 7 features and changes to the performance of iOS 7 there are sure to be bugs, which is why it’s not a good idea to run the iOS 7 beta on a device that is used every day.

App developers are especially protective of app reviews and ratings as they influence user’s decisions to buy the app. Lower star ratings and bad reviews can impact the popularity and sales of an app. Criticism is good when apps deserve it, but when it’s about a beta software release not working right with their app, it’s

To downgrade – press the home and power button together for 15 seconds. DFU mode – ON!
Now open iTunes and choose your device. Press shift+restore and choose the ipsw file of choice. You’re done!

Hey. It’s simple. iOS7 is in Beta… yes. But it is also a huge overhaul of the entire software platform. It’s going to crash. Some programs WONT work! It is not going to perform at its best! NOT YET! WHICH IS WHY IT IS A BETA OFFERED TO DEVELOPERS and not everyday Joe’s who feel it would be cool to have the “Latest” on their phones.

Please, stop crying about something you should not have in the first place and leave the BETAS to us. The people who actually know what to expect from a BETA and how to work with them.

And if you do choose to install the BETA… STFU!!!

    • NonDev. oh actually im a registered dev with no experiance

I’m beta testing a number of devices. I also decided to beta test on my everyday phone. May not have been the smartest decision, but I wanted to find out what it was like to use for everyday tasks. I’ve, of course, encountered a plethora of problems. But I knew what I was signing up for – I’m not complaining and not should anyone else.
A few days ago my nephew decided he wanted to play peggle. He decided to load it on my iPhone 4 running beta 3. It crashed on loading. I tested it on all my other beta devices with the same result. It did, however, run on the spare iPhone 4 which is not beta testing – at last a quiet 7 year old :) For this miracle I decided to write a 5 star review. It was then I saw a 2 star review by Kylesterr32 (time for a name and shame policy) complaining that it wouldn’t run on ios 7. I then changed my review – still 5 stars – explaining to that idiot (and any others like him) why they shouldn’t be whining. I implore everyone to do the same! Let’s support all developers and nullify these idiotic low reviews when they are not warranted.

I guess if stuff like this continues to happen, Apple will lock everything down even more (with good reason) and stop offering Betas to anyone altogether… I can’t blame them!

Yes, moron, so that their software will released buggy and untested. What a great business decision! Never be a business owner.

Wouldn’t be a problem if developers would fix their app(s) for iOS 7. I mean the software has only been released, what? A month and a half ago and yet barely any apps look like they’ve been tweaked for the software? Pathetic. It doesn’t matter if it’s a beta or not, developers should be tweaking their apps for iOS 7 and it looks like they aren’t even making an effort to at this point.

LMAO!! You don’t code and compile an app on the fly! Hahaha people don’t just imagine an app and it appears on the App Store! Have you ever even looked at any code?! Wait… For everyone out there that thinks coding is as simple as licking windows, here’s a bit for your viewing pleasure.

      key=”EncodedWithXMLCoder”>YES

      YES

      YES

Anyone know what that is?? ….. Err nah, course not. ALL DEVELOPERS will be working hard on beta testing IN HOUSE! This means they test at the office before releasing to the App Store. Where, Apple test further before releasing to the public. WHY?! I hear you scream? Well, firstly so you guys dont cry about it not being ready and secondly, because all their customers on the latest public release (ios 6.1.3/4) I.e 99% of them, may well end up with major bugs. All because YOU want to dick about with a beta (of which your knowledge appears minute) and flash it about to the “boys” at the office. The beta that is, not the knowledge…. Don’t be a twat all your life, come back to the real world and do a little research before you waste your time and others, embarrassing yourself with your dribblerling ignorance.

A month in a half isn’t exactly “on the fly”, especially these smaller apps like living social and whatever else that was pointed out.

        • Voist2

          07/23/2013 at 5:53 pm

You still don’t get it do you…. WHAT IS THE POINT IN RELEASING IT BUGGY ON A BUGGY OS WHEN ONLY 1% OF USERS ARE USING IT. AND EVEN THEN, PEOPLE LIKE YOU WILL STILL MOAN?! Have you ever heard of the knock on effect? Just like you’re starting to sound stupider with every post, when code is altered OS or within an app they both have a “knock on effect” which could effect how they operate with each other. The app works on IOS 6 right? So it’s the OS that’s caused the problems not the app developers and the OS isn’t even finished yet. So as Apple makes updates it could still effect apps. Apple also vets apps for up to 6 weeks before releasing so you do the math. Your basically saying you can fix code over night. It’s ridiculous. It’s not a word document with a spell checker! Even missing a , can break an entire app. Geez! I really don’t know why I’m wasting my time…..

      07/24/2013 at 10:58 am

You seriously feel developers should modify their apps – al of them – just because Apple releases a new OS? Do you know how many apps their are???

If the app worked on iOS 6 then it should still work on iOS 7. Now if you want to take advantage of new features then you should update the app.

Voist2 I understand exactly what your saying. Mike Proudly, here it is in the verbiage you can understand. The app developers are not going to”fix” an app for you, one person, that breaks it for millions of others. That is what would be essentially happening EACH time a new beta was released.

fixes that must be done in ios7b3 (iphone 4s):
    1. when unlock screen, sometimes it took a second to load home (showed blurred white screen).
    2. when setting the wallpaper, then lock and unlock to test the lockscreen, most of the time the setting crashes and go back to home.
    3. the front camera sometimes lag or stuck with blurred white on the screen
    4. when try to download, the download sometimes failed. have to download several times to successfully download it.
    5. there are bugs, like suddenly the 3g is on,sometimes the bluetooth is on even when i switch it off. have to go to setting back to on and off when this happened.
    6. the battery drains faster compared to ios 6.1.3 even when not in use
    7. once it goes to DFU mode when in pocket. have to press start+home button
    8. the icon is a bit big for me. in my opinion, smaller icon loads faster.

overall ios7 is a big improvement for apple. keep up the good work.

I don’t complain about broken apps because i have been where the developers are and its hard work. I simply install the beta on my iphone 5 until i hit a bug and then i revert to ios 6.1.4. wish there was a place that i could leave notes about errors i have found.
