The new Nexus 7 combines a slimmer design with a new soft touch finish and a stunning high-resolution display with a higher price.

This new 7-inch tablet is a worthy upgrade from last year’s Nexus 7 model and will help Google compete with the iPad mini, and possibly the iPad mini 2 (which could include a Retina Display).

Amazon and Best Buy are already shipping new Nexus 7 orders, and Best Buy retail stores are selling the device today, so we wanted to dive in with a fast Nexus 7 unboxing to show buyers what’s in store for them.

The new Nexus 7 or Nexus 7 (2013) retails for $229 for the 16GB model and $269 for the 32GB model. A WiFi + LTE version that works on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon is coming, but will not arrive for several weeks.

The two-minute video below offers a quick look at the new Nexus 7 tablet and highlights some of the new features found on the Nexus 7 (2013) model.

Inside the box buyers will find the new Nexus 7 partially charged, along with documentation and a new Nexus 7 charger and USB cable.

The new Nexus 7 features a soft touch matte black finish that delivers a nice look and feel to the slimmer tablet. Users upgrading from the old Nexus 7 to the new model will immediately notice the slimmer design and lighter weight.

Also new is the addition of stereo speakers that sit on the edges of the display when held in landscape mode. These rear-facing speakers are an improvement from the old model, and when gaming or watching movies holding the tablet by the edge helps direct sound towards the user.

The Nexus 7 display is the second thing users will notice. The new Nexus 7 features a 1920 x 1200 resolution display that looks great, especially compared to the 1280 x 800 resolution on the old model.

The new Nexus 7 display delivers sharper text and better looking photos, and the new Android 4.3 update allows Netlfix movies to play in 1080P. Users can send movies and YouTube videos to their HDTV with the ChromeCast dongle or a Slimport HDMI adapter.

In addition to those features a 5MP rear facing camera allows for a more in-depth video chat experience and makes the new Nexus 7 a better companion for users that want to take photos of notes and other moments.

Google includes a small notification led on the bottom of the Nexus 7, which allows users to see when new email arrives and other alerts come in.

There are also new Android 4.3 features, like limited profiles that let users set up a kid-friendly login that limits apps and in-app purchases. The Android 4.3 update is coming to the original Nexus 7 right now.
