The 5 Best Android Smartphones [August, 2013]

As we head into the fall, the Android smartphone market is starting to heat up with rumors, and launches, surfacing at an extraordinary rate. This is both a good and a bad thing for those that are looking to find a fantastic Android smartphone during the month of August.

While the first half of 2013 was relatively quiet in terms of Android smartphone releases, at least compared to recent years, it was still an exciting first half nonetheless as companies launched their big shots across the bows of competitors. In January, it was the Sony Xperia Z. In February, it was the HTC One and in March, it was the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Those devices have led the way this year and continue to rank amongst the best devices on the market. However, they will soon be joined by a number of new big name devices that are set to emerge ahead of the holiday shopping season. Devices like the HTC One Max and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

There are those, however, that simply cannot wait another month for a new smartphone and in particular, a new Android smartphone. August unfortunately falls right before the begin of the second wave of smartphones but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a hefty amount of device starring prospective buyers right in the face.

On the contrary, August will be home to a ton of fantastic devices. That’s the good. The bad is that it’s going to make life difficult for those that are looking for a new device. Fortunately, there are devices that rise above the rest in the month of August, devices, that consumers need to have at the top of their list.

Nexus 4

The Moto X, which arrived today, was rumored to have a Nexus-like price. Turns out, the Nexus 4 remains king in the world of unlocked smartphones. Motorola's Moto X will be coming in a Google Edition style with vanilla Android and updates straight from Google, but it's unlikely to see a price as cheap as the Nexus 4's which checks in at $299 off-contract. That's still a fantastic price this late in the Nexus 4's life, particularly when it should be getting updates for years to come. The Nexus 4 remains one of the best Android smartphones on the market and will stay that way until the arrival of the Nexus 5.
