PS4 Proves More Popular than Xbox One as Release Approaches

Published

on

The PS4 is killing the Xbox One in consumer interest as we approach the holiday release dates which will pit the new consoles against each other during the prime shopping season.

Search trends shows consumer interest in the PS4 is twice that of the Xbox One, while both unreleased consoles are beating the Wii U.

To gauge consumer interest we compare the search trends for the Xbox One, PS3 and Wii U in Google Trends. This is not a survey of potential buyers, but data on what consumers are searching for in Google.

Even though we finally know the Xbox One and PS4 price, there are many details still missing about the new consoles including the Xbox One release date and PS4 release date, which leads to searches and acts as a way to monitor consumer interest for the Xbox One and PS4 in the U.S.

Xbox One vs. PS4 vs. Wii U

Average interestIn the first trends comparison, we see the Wii U take an early lead in late 2012, but despite coming to market a year ahead of the competition, the console is now lagging behind the PS4 and the Xbox One. In this look, we leave PlayStation 4 out as consumers search PS4 more often than the full name.

In February and May the Xbox One and PS4 battle it out for consumer interest as Microsoft and Sony show off their consoles ahead of the much-anticipated E3 gaming convention where additional details are released.

In June the battle heats up again as Sony announces the PS4 price at $100 cheaper than the Xbox One’s $500 price tag. This leads us into the end of July, where search interest in the PS4 is ranked nearly twice as high as the Xbox One. Interest in the Xbox One and PS4 both supersede that in the Wii U.

It’s almost impossible to buy a PS4 or Xbox One without looking at accessories, even if it is just to find a microphone or a second controller with a charging pack.

As Xbox One accessories and PS4 accessories trickle out, consumers continue to search for the PS4 more often.

Xbox One Accessories are not searched for as often as the PS4.

This search data helps us keep a pulse on interest in the Xbox One and PS4, though it is not a complete look at the rivalry. Bing does not offer the same access to search comparisons, which could help provide a fuller picture.

Retailers in the U.S. and in the UK are already running short on Xbox One and PS4 pre-orders which are likely the only way to buy a new console on release day.

The Xbox One and PS4 launch day edition are both sold out at Amazon, though some PS4 launch bundles are still available.

LOL keep talking about Xbox one not being hacked and it will. Remember pcs are hacked and get virus because of Microsoft hate not pcs. PS was hacked due to getting rid of services. I can only imagine what they do to the current xbox one when basically they wanted to restrict everything. PS4 is going to be better. Xbox was all about halo which saved it by the way (ms almost got wipe out first time out). By the way xbox 360 broke down 40 percent of the time with red ring of death. The system itself so a lot worse than internet hacking. Of course xbox fans won’t admit their first two systems sucked.
PS4 all the way. It is just the right system, Sony isn’t as bad as Microsoft who is all about screwing people over or buying their way out of trouble. Nintendo is all about selling same system over and over with different names and Nintendo fans buy it anyway with no thought at all.
