iPhone 6 Concept Steals Samsung Feature for Endless Display

Published

A beautiful new iPhone 6 concept uses a wrap around display to deliver a never-ending display, which looks similar to an Apple patent and steals a wrap around display feature from Samsung.

At this point the iPhone 6 isn’t likely to arrive until 2014, but that isn’t stopping Apple fans from creating concepts for what they think the iPhone 6 will look like and what features it could bring to the table.

Most of these iPhone 6 concepts are a reach for technology currently on the market, using a bit of artistic license to deliver mind-blowing features and designs which may or may not see the light of day on an actual device.

This new iPhone 6 concept started as a simple promo for an RSS reader from Claudio Guglieri and morphed into a full-blown iPhone 6 mock-up with a wrap around display that includes side controls appearing on Kottke.

This looks like something out of a Sci-Fi movie, but Apple patented and iPhone with a wrap around display and Samsung is working on a flexible display that can wrap around the edge of a device — which could make this iPhone a reality at some point in the future.

The original iPhone 6 concept shows a screen on the front and the back of an iPhone-like device that wraps content around the edge of the device to deliver content all around the iPhone. A Lightning port is visible on the bottom of the device.

This design would take a smart new algorithm to detect wanted and unwanted touches, and would require a very durable glass or plastic coating that could survive drops and the bangs and bumps that come from daily use. This design could also limit case options or force designers to really innovate with touch-sensitive panels in cases.

Several other users created iPhone 6 concepts from the same design, adding functionality to the sides of the iPhone 6. In the image above we see touch sensitive volume controls on the left side of the device. The image below shows how the right side could display a date, and other information users may be interested in seeing.

Users that want to make their own take on this iPhone 6 concept can use this Photoshop file to get started.

We first saw this type of iPhone 6 concept come from an Apple patent which could show Apple’s vision for an iPhone 6. This patent outlines how Apple could deliver a wrap-around display with flexible displays which could loop content across the displays and or deliver controls on the back of the device while the user is seeing a game on the front.

Samsung unveiled Youm, a flexible display technology that we could see on a Samsung device in the near future. This technology showed off a display that wrapped around the edge of the display. The video above shows this demo device and some concept Youm devices from Samsung.

That is the dumbest thing anyone can do when it comes to function and common sense for a smart phone. Really??? Do we need to see what’s on the edge of our phone? No. It’s just going to waste more battery and be alot more easy to damage… The iphone needs to make the whole front of the iphone a screen with no borders on the top and bottom and put the home button on the back of the phone….
