iPhone 5S: What Buyers Can Expect from Apple

Published

on

A new Apple iPhone, likely carrying the iPhone 5S name is on the way with a special Apple event on track for September 10th. With a date in mind, and new iPhone 5S leaks, we take a look at what iPhone buyers can expect from Apple this fall.

The first iPhone 5S rumor arrived almost a year ago, and since then iPhone 5S rumors, leaks and analyst rumblings have converged to paint a picture of a new iPhone that may look similar to the iPhone 5, but one that will come with a collection of new features which Apple is betting will spur upgrades and convince users to switch from Android.

Even if this isn’t looking like a revolutionary iPhone 6, the iPhone 5S is still poised to deliver upgrades that consumers will use, like a better camera and a fingerprint sensor that could simplify the hassle of keeping the iPhone secure.

The iPhone 5S is taking shape as we come within a month of the rumored iPhone 5S launch.

As the rumored iPhone 5S launch date approaches, and as production of the iPhone 5S inevitably ramps up, new leaks continue to showcase rumored features and highlight what shoppers can expect in a new iPhone.

The iPhone 5S will also reportedly come alongside a budget iPhone 5C with a colorful plastic finish and a cheap off contract price that could help Apple earn new customers in emerging markets and may replace an iPhone 4S as a free iPhone on the carriers in the U.S.

Here are the latest iPhone 5S rumors which outline what the iPhone 5S could look like, new features and software and what Apple thinks will keep users from customizing a Moto X, picking up a Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One.

Fingerprint Sensor

Just over a year after purchasing a security firm known for fingerprint sensor technology, it looks like Apple could finally be adding the sensor into the iPhone 5S.

While Apple has a patent for an iPhone with a fingerprint sensor in the display, the latest rumors suggest Apple is planning to use the same Sapphire material used to keep the camera clear of scratches to coat a home button that houses a fingerprint sensor.

This alleged part shows changes that could accommodate a fingerprint reader.

A new backplate alleged to be for the iPhone 5S shows a small group of changes that could make room for a fingerprint sensor, published by Nowhereelse.fr. The OS 7 beta included bits of code pointing to a fingerprint security feature on the iPhone 5S. This is no longer in the developer beta, but could be part of an internal iOS 7 beta.

This feature should allow users to unlock the iPhone by placing a finger on the home button, offering a simpler way to lock and unlock the iPhone.

iPhone 5S Display

Despite some early claims that the iPhone 5S would feature a larger higher resolution display, weeks away from the launch date it looks like the iPhone 5S will feature a 4-inch Retina Display, like that found on the iPhone 5.

Expect a similar 4-inch display for the iPhone 5S.

Expect a similar 4-inch display for the iPhone 5S.

This is backed up by multiple leaks that show room for a display of the same size, and parts that some claim to be a display for the new iPhone.

At this point, a 4-inch display looks like a done deal, and Apple fans looking for a larger screen will likely need to wait for the iPhone 6 in 2014, which is rumored to use a bigger screen.

iPhone 5S Size & Design

The iPhone 5S size and design will likely look and feel very familiar. Many of the images shown on this page are of the iPhone 5, and on release day, look for an iPhone 5S that looks nearly identical and isn’t any bigger.

While it looks like Apple is working on a new design for the iPad 5, the iPhone 5S will reportedly look a lot like the current iPhone.

The iPhone 5S should look similar to the iPhone 5.

We could see a new color option, with multiple reports of a gold or champagne iPhone 5S color option. This isn’t a done deal, but with mounting color options for competing phones and a lucrative iPhone case market designed to let iPhone owners pick their favorite colors we could see Apple trying to get in on the action.

Rumors of a liquidmetal iPhone come into play again, but at this point it looks like users will be getting an iPhone 5S with aluminum and glass — complete with the scratching problem that pesters iPhone 5 owners.

We could see minor changes in the exterior appearance, including a new look for the flash, but overall it’s going to be the same.

iPhone 5S Camera

The iPhone remains one of the most popular cameras in the world thanks to delivering a pocketable camera with impressive performance.

Look for an iPhone 5S camera that steps this up with a 12-13MP sensor, similar to the one found in the Samsung Galaxy S4 or Sony Xperia Z. The new sensor will reportedly deliver better overall low-light performance.

We expect Apple to hammer home an improved camera.

In addition to the new sensor, we could see slow-motion video support by way of a 120fps recording option. This comes from digging done by Hamza Sood and 9to5Mac.

Multiple leaks show a new dual-LED flash that should offer a more natural look for photos. 9to5Mac cites well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who states a yellow bulb and a white bulb will combine to deliver better looking photos taken with flash.

iPhone 5S Battery Life

The iPhone 5S battery life will reportedly get a boost according to Pipper Jaffray’s Gene Munster. This improved iPhone 5S battery life could come thanks to an improved Apple A7 processor that could deliver more efficient power usage, similar to how Apple boosted the MacBook Air battery life.

Other leaks point to small battery size enhancements, but the bulk of battery life enhancements for an iPhone 5S would need to come from the processor or from a power efficient iOS 7.

iPhone 5S Release, Price & Pre-Order

The iPhone 5S release date could come as swiftly as September 20th, which would allow Apple a full weekend and week of iPhone 5S sales before its fiscal quarter ends on September 28th.

If this is the case, iPhone 5S pre-orders should start on or around midnight Pacific on September 13th. Reports indicate Apple’s supply may be limited due to issues manufacturing the fingerprint reader, which could mean a fast sell-through of pre-orders and limited stock in store on the iPhone 5S release.

We expect the iPhone 5S price will remain in step with the iPhone 5 and that we will likely see the same storage options. There is some chatter about a new 128GB iPhone 5S, to match the 128GB iPad option, but at this point it isn’t concrete enough to plan on buying a more expensive iPhone 5S. Look for on contract ipHone 5S pricing at $199 to $399 and off contract from $649 to $849 from 16GB to 64GB.

iPhone needs a bigger screen right now. Apple should keep a iPhone with 4 inch and another with 4,7 or 5 inch.
