Why You Shouldn’t Buy the iPhone 5 Right Now

Published

on

Apple’s iPhone 5 remains the company’s flagship smartphone and a solid option for those looking to buy a smartphone during the month of August and beyond. However, there are some reasons why we think buyers should hold off from buying the iPhone 5, at least right now, as we head into the final days of summer.

Last year, Apple finally announced an iPhone that included a number of upgrades that consumers had been campaigning for for years. First, 4G LTE data speeds. Before the iPhone 5, Android phones ruled the land of LTE as Apple remained hesitant to release a device with that capability. The iPhone 5 came with LTE data, and great battery life at that, and currently runs on four of the nation’s five largest carriers in AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Second, the device came with a larger display and different aspect ratio for content, something that buyers had been hoping for for years. All previous versions of the iPhone came with a 3.5-inch display, the iPhone 5 came with a 4-inch Retina Display with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. And finally, third, the device came with a redesign, a design that is and was much slimmer and lighter than the iPhone 4S’ and features anodized aluminum instead of glass.

These features, and more, including a good camera and fast processor, have made the iPhone 5 one of the top smartphones available in the United States, across all carriers. Even after the new iPhone arrives, the iPhone 5 will be one of the best options for those looking to snag a new device. And yet, there are some reasons why those looking into the iPhone 5 might want to hold off on buying it, at least for the time being.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy the iPhone 5 Right Now

A new report summarizes the possible iPhone 5S specs based on supply chain sources.

The iPhone 5 remains a solid option though there are reasons to wait a few weeks before buying.

Only a Few Weeks Left

Time is always a crucial element when looking for a new smartphone. For lots of buyers, it’s a decision between waiting a long time for a smartphone launch or settling on a device that is currently out on shelves. Not right now though.

Those looking for a new iPhone right now have it easy. That’s because the new iPhone, presumed to be called the iPhone 5S, is expected to touch down in just a few short weeks.

September 10th has been pegged as its launch date with September 20th rumored as its release date. What this means is that buyers need only wait a few weeks before they get a glimpse at Apple’s new iPhone and some other things that should make waiting a few weeks before buying, a much easier decision to make.

Price Drop Imminent

When Apple announces a new iPhone, it typically sends shock waves through its iPhone ranks. That is to say, they abolish one iPhone and drop the price of others.

The iPhone 5 launch saw the company move the iPhone 4S down to $99.99 on-contract and the iPhone 4 down to free on-contract. The launch pushed the iPhone 3GS out of the Apple Store completely.

The iPhone 5S is taking shape as we come within a month of the rumored iPhone 5S launch.

The iPhone 5 price should drop when the iPhone 5S arrives.

With the arrival of the iPhone 5S, we could see the iPhone 5 drop down to $99 on-contract in just a few weeks, a much more attractive offer than the $199.99 price tag that is current attached to it. Even if that’s not the case, and it’s possible that it won’t be given the rumors of an iPhone 5C, we should still see retailers and carriers try to clear out stock and drop the price.

So by waiting just a few weeks, buyers will be able to get a brand new iPhone 5, not a refurbished or used one, for much cheaper than the current price.

More Options in September

Indeed, Apple is thought to be announcing an iPhone 5C in addition to the iPhone 5. The device is rumored to have a plastic back, Lightning port, 4-inch Retina Display and quite possibly, the same camera as the one found on the iPhone 5. It’s also thought to have a cheap price tag, possibly even cheaper than $99.

It may replace the iPhone 5, it may not, but even if it does, the iPhone 5 will still be on shelves somewhere and the iPhone 5C will just be another option for consumers. It won’t be the only option though.

By waiting until September, prospective iPhone 5 buyers open themselves up to a wealth of new possibilities including:

  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone 5C
  • HTC One Max
  • LG G2
  • Moto X
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Sony Xperia Z Ultra

All of those are expected to either launch or be released by the end of September.

There are also going to be the deals on the current flagships including the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, HTC One, and most likely, the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 as well.

Longevity

One last reason to wait to buy the iPhone 5 is for the iPhone 5S itself. The iPhone 5 will be a year old come September 10th and that means that it will have one of software support used up. What this means is that instead of the usual three years of support, those who buy the iPhone 5 now, and sign a two year contract, will likely get two years.

This is still good, but having three is a luxury that many iPhone owners cherish as it gives them flexibility when coming off contract.

By getting the iPhone 5S, buyers will not only get all of the new features but will get a year’s more of software support, at the cost of about $100 or so more up front. It’s a trade-off that is worth considering.

Keep in mind, we’re not saying don’t buy the iPhone 5 at all, it’s a solid phone. What we are saying that by waiting a few weeks, not only will the iPhone 5 drop in price, but there should be a host of options available that could ultimately be more appetizing than a $199.99 iPhone 5.
