Verizon HTC One: 5 New Key Details to Know

Published

on

Finally, after months and months of speculation, rumors and waiting, the Verizon HTC One release date is here for those who decided to wait for Big Red’s version of HTC’s current flagship. And while the device is finally out on shelves, there are some key things that current and future buyers need to know about Verizon’s new HTC One.

All the way back in February, HTC announced the HTC One on stage in New York City to great fanfare. The device, which replaced the HTC One X+ and One X, arrived with a host of upgrades including an improved display, processor, and camera, while also retaining the full metal design that owners of the HTC One X loved.

The Verizon HTC One release date has finally arrived.

The Verizon HTC One release date has finally arrived.

The device was announced for AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint at the time with rumblings about a Verizon HTC One emerging, teasing owners with a possible launch. Shortly after, the HTC One was pegged for an arrival about one to two months after the other devices. Turns out, that was true.

In April, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint released their HTC One models to the public and a little under two months later, in early June, Verizon announced its own HTC One for release later in the summer. The carrier didn’t make a big deal out of the launch, something that foreshadowed its fate.

The Verizon HTC One release date skipped June, it skipped July and finally, more than two months after first announcing the device, Verizon tagged it with an August 22nd release date, a $199.99 price tag, 32GB of storage while also issuing zero apologies about its tardiness.

As expected, the device went on sale today both in-stores and online and should be available for some time to come. Many will be tempted to buy the phone today, others will weigh their options going forward. Whatever the case, there are still some key things that Verizon HTC One buyers need to know about the device on release day.

There Are Deals

This is an Android smartphone and one that is arriving very late so it should come as no surprise that there are some deals out there that buyers should be looking at. There are three in particular that buyers should have their eyes on:

  • Dell – $149.99 on-contract w/ free pair of urBeats Headphones. (Thanks, Matt!)
  • Wirefly – $149.99 on-contract.
  • Verizon – VERIZON30 coupon reportedly drops price down by $30 to $170.

Dell’s offer is fantastic for those that want not only a discounted price but a pair of quality ear buds for their new Verizon HTC One.

We still haven’t see Amazon offer the HTC One for Verizon but when it does, it should have a deeply discounted price as well.

Blue and Black

The Verizon HTC One only comes in silver though there are rumors that it could come in both black and blue in the future. The black HTC One is available through other carriers so it was strange not to see Verizon opt to offer at least two colors. The blue model is rumored to be coming sometime in the future though no date is set.

The HTC One Max is rumored for September with a 6-inch display.

The Verizon HTC should get an additional color or two.

So those that can wait, and there probably won’t be many, could have some new color options available at some point later this year. The blue HTC One for Verizon seems likely and given the widespread availability of the jet black model, there is reason to believe that Verizon might opt to carry it sometime down the road.

Bootloader Unlocked, For Now

Verizon loves to keep its devices locked down tight but it appears that the Verizon HTC One’s bootloader can be unlocked, for the time being, through HTCDev.com.

According to users on XDA, the method works on the Verizon HTC One for the time being but it’s likely only a matter of time before HTC, an update, or something else kills this as an option.

By unlocking the bootloader, users will be able to flash software to their device, something that is big for most Android users. So consider this a heads up as we don’t expect this to last forever.

Android 4.3 Soon?

The Verizon HTC One comes with Android 4.2.2 not Android 4.1 like the other HTC One models in the United States. However, there is a good chance that it won’t be on Google’s previous version of Jelly Bean for long.

HTC President Jason Mackenzie has confirmed the companies plans to skip Android 4.2 for Android 4.3 in the United States and that Android 4.3 will replace Android 4.2, across SKUs, by the end of September.

This should mean an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the Verizon model at some point soon though as consumers know, Verizon is notorious for being last to software update’s so there is a chance that it could be behind the rest of the pack, even if it has newer software.

Plenty of Options Incoming

Finally, Verizon HTC One buyers, despite the wait, should not rush into buying this phone. Know this. There are numerous big name devices that are slated to arrive in the next few weeks, devices that will rival the Verizon HTC One.

The Galaxy Note 3 launches September 4th.

The Galaxy Note 3 launches September 4th.

Here is a list of devices that will be launching or getting released in the next few weeks:

  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone 5C
  • HTC One Max
  • LG G2
  • Moto X
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Sony Xperia Z Ultra

This is important to know because by waiting a few weeks, buyers will have several more options to choose from. And at that time, buyers can weigh the Verizon HTC One against the competition, including the larger HTC One Max, and truly make an informed decision.

Waiting won’t be for everyone but for those that aren’t 100% sold on the Verizon HTC One, it’s worth thinking about.

How can the largest mobile company stay the largest mobile company when they always make these stupid decisions not to carry all colors?
Really, why is it so hard to get this phone in black?
I’m so sick of Verizons actions yet they have the best net work and service but damn poor judgement.

Im with Al. Not paying $500 for a color I am not crazy about. And if the device is locked to hell when black comes I will just pass.

I agree, but the battery life is terrible. I am at 40% at 10:30 am from 7 am. I hope this levels out after a few days or this is going back. I love everything else. Installed Nova launcher to remove Blink feed.

I think something must be continually running, or some other problem. I’ve had mine for 3 days, have used it quite excessively, and average power only down to 40% in 9-10 hours. Love the phone immensely, more than my iphone 5 provided for work (which i also like).

i think its ridiculous that you have to pay 199$ for a phone that already been on the market for 6 months. Verizon don’t give a daym about their customers. May as well wait for a 6 more months til it comes down to 99$. On a side note..the iphone5s may be coming with a fingerprint scanner…super! now the NSA can have your fingerprint for free too! sweet!

At least the retail is only $599 for those of us paying full retail. I was expecting $699 like the S4 and Maxx.
