5 Ways the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Could Beat the iPhone 5S

Published

on

In just a few weeks, we should see both the Apple iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launch and tempt consumers with their charms. Both devices are sure to have some tempting features and here, we take a look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 features that could potentially push consumers away from the iPhone 5S.

Apple and Samsung appear destined for another clash as the companies are thought to be announcing new flagship smartphones in the coming weeks. For Samsung, it’s the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a device that the company has confirmed for arrival on September 4th, and a device that will be matched up against the likes of the HTC One Max, Sony Xperia Z Ultra and yes, the iPhone 5S.

The Cupertino-based company still hasn’t confirmed an iPhone 5S launch date though September 10th is heavily rumored as its target date, meaning, we could see the iPhone 5S launch just about a week after the Galaxy Note 3. And with the devices likely launching and getting released in both proximity to each other, it’s natural that consumers will likely have them near the top of their smartphone shopping list.

Both of these devices are going to be powerful, attractive smartphones. No doubt about it. However, like all smartphones, there will be areas where they are superior to each other. Thanks to extensive feature leaks for both the Galaxy Note 3 and the iPhone 5S, we have a good idea where their superiority might lie. The iPhone 5S will likely outsell the Galaxy Note 3, but that doesn’t mean that it will the superior smartphone in all arenas.

Here, we take a close look at areas where we think the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be equipped to beat the iPhone 5S.

Bigger, Higher Resolution Display

One of the hallmarks of the Samsung Galaxy Note series is its large display. And it looks like Samsung will be going even larger with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Rumors suggest that the Galaxy Note 3 display will be checking in at 5.7-inches with 1080p resolution. That’s bigger and better than the display on the Galaxy Note 2. What this also means is that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 display will more than likely feature a larger display and higher resolution display than the iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 5S is expected to retain the iPhone 5’s 4-inch Retina Display. There have been rumors that we could see a boost in pixels-per-inch to make it even better, but that remains flimsy. So, we could see an iPhone 5S display that is on par, in terms of quality and size, with the display on the iPhone 5.

The Galaxy Note 3 will have a larger display than the Galaxy Note 2, seen here with the iPhone 5.

The Galaxy Note 3 will have a larger display than the Galaxy Note 2, seen here with the iPhone 5.

Not everyone wants or needs a massive display like the Galaxy Note 3’s but here is why we think it will be better overall. For one, the large screen means more real estate for things like watching movies. Watching a movie on the iPhone 5’s display can be a bit uncomfortable due to its small size. Same goes for playing games. The Galaxy Note 3 will be the optimal display for playing games as it will more closely mirror a gaming handset. In addition, reading on the Galaxy Note 3 should be easier for those that need it as font sizes will be larger.

We should also see the resolution change bring a big boost to the pixel-per-inch count on the Galaxy Note 3 and it could be on par with the 326ppi that is on the iPhone 5. So expect content to look great on both, but expect to be able to do more with the Galaxy Note 3’s display size.

Tons of Storage

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is rumored to be coming in 32GB form instead of the 16GB models that we’ve seen emerge in the past. If that’s true, users should be able to expand the memory of the device with a 64GB microSD card which will bring the device’s internal storage up to 96GB. The 32GB is looking like it will be the base amount for the Galaxy Note 3.

Note the better spacing around the 128GB option.

The iPhone 5S could come in four storage sizes, but it still won’t beat the Galaxy Note 3.

The iPhone 5S is expected to come in several different storage variants though nothing is confirmed. We’ve seen Apple offer 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models in the past though there are rumors that we could see a 128GB model emerge as well. If it does, we could see it replace the 16GB iPhone 5S.

So here is how it would likely breakdown:

  • iPhone 5S 16GB: $199.99
  • iPhone 5S 32GB: $299.99
  • iPhone 5S 64BG: $399.99

Or, if a 128GB iPhone 5S is introduced:

  • iPhone 5S 16GB: $199.99
  • iPhone 5S 32GB: $299.99
  • iPhone 5S 64GB: $399.99
  • iPhone 5S 128GB: $499.99

Or:

  • iPhone 5S 32GB: $199.99
  • iPhone 5S 64GB: $299.99
  • iPhone 5S 128GB: $399.99

What this means is that we could see a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with more bang, storage-wise, for a buck. The iPhone 5S is not likely to have a microSD card slot which means that users could be stuck with 32GB at the very worst or 64GB at the very best for $299.99 in our scenario. Or, the same price as a 96GB Galaxy Note 3.

Both devices will utilize cloud storage as well but it could be that the Galaxy Note 3 will appeal to power users who need a ton of space for apps, games, photos, video, and more.

Removable Back

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is almost assuredly going to be made of plastic, we know this thanks to Samsung’s history and some recent part leaks, and that should mean that it will come with a removable back, just like the Galaxy S4. The iPhone 5S, on the other hand, is unlikely to feature a removable back as the iPhone 5 didn’t have one and Apple has never offered the feature in the past.

What this could mean is that the Galaxy Note 3 will have two major benefits over the iPhone 5S. The first, wireless charging. We saw Samsung introduce a Wireless Charging Kit for the Galaxy S4 and given the popularity of the Galaxy Note, it makes sense that it would offer one for the Galaxy Note 3 as well. Wireless charging allows users to charge their device without wires.

The iPhone 5S likely won't have a removable back.

The iPhone 5S likely won’t have a removable back.

The other reason has to do with the battery. With a removable back, users can easily install an extended battery inside the Galaxy Note 3 in order to get more juice. The Galaxy Note 3 should already have a massive battery inside but for those that need it, there should be massive extended batteries available on shelves.

The iPhone 5S will benefit from things like Mophie cases but adding an extended battery will likely be next to impossible thanks to the non-removable back.

Powerful Multitasking

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 featured and still does feature some of the most powerful multitasking on the market. Thanks to the Galaxy Note 2’s enormous display and high-end processor, features like Multi-Window View and Pop Up Play and Pop Up Browser, which allow users to watch a video while doing other tasks, work like a charm.

These features will likely be on board the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. And there are signs that we could see some improvements to those and possibly some additions to the Galaxy Note 3’s software as well.

Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, told The Korea Times this about the Galaxy Note 3:

Samsung opened a new smart mobile device category back in 2011 with the introduction of the first Galaxy Note. Since then, smartphones with large screens have been a mainstream trend. As the creator of this category, we will introduce our customers to enhanced key features on our Galaxy Note devices.

A key feature on the Galaxy Note has always been multitasking so it’s possible that we could see some upgrades here. The device is also expected to feature a Qualcomm 800 quad-core processor and 3GB of RAM which should help with the horsepower needed for powerful multitasking features.

iOS 7 brings improved multitasking to iPhone owners but it’s likely not going to be on par with the Galaxy Note 3, even if the device doesn’t feature drastic multitasking upgrades.

iOS 7 multitasking allows users to see full size previews of apps and brings the ability to swipe to dismiss them. But there is nothing, at least that we’ve seen, that appears to trump the type of multitasking found on the Galaxy Note series.

So for those that love to do tons of stuff at once, particularly all at once on the same screen, the Galaxy Note 3 will likely be worth taking a close look at.

S Pen

When Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone, he was quick to point out that its competitors uses styli, a pen that allowed users to write and perform functions on the display. Before the launch of the original Galaxy Note, styluses were mainly used in conjunction with tablets, not smartphones. Samsung changed that.

The Galaxy Note comes with a bundled stylus called the S Pen that can be holstered inside the phone when not in use. The stylus isn’t a standard stylus though as it comes with some of the Galaxy Note’s most unique features.

For instance, when users pull the S Pen out of the holster, it brings up a powerful note taking app called S Note that is perfect for jotting down ideas while in class or in a meeting. For many, it’s going to be more accurate than trying to type on a keyboard on a screen that is 4-inches in size.

Users can also hover over things like email to get a preview or simply navigate through the device’s user interface simply by making movements with the pen. This is more than an average stylus.

We’ve seen signs that Samsung is going to improve the S Pen with the Galaxy Note 3. For one, its upcoming developer conference notes that it will be talking about new functionality for the S Pen. We’ve also seen a possible S Pen related website emerge ahead of the Galaxy Note 3 launch. And finally, we have to consider Lee Young-hee’s comments about focusing on the key features.

The S Pen is what separates the Galaxy Note from its competitors and with competition breathing down its neck, we should see the S Pen grow even more powerful with the Galaxy Note 3 whether its upgraded applications or new applications that usher in a new era.

This is something that iPhone 5S owners simply will not have access to unless Apple drastically alters its course and offers a unique stylus for its next iPhone, something that simply isn’t going to happen.

Well guys & girls, how bout the dedicated camera button below the power button.!? Also since Samsung partnered with & purchased 50% of a major Carbon Fiber Co.(recently), for the primary purpose of getting away from total polycarbonate, guess the Carbon Fiber back batt cover will help there image a little, Hey. ! ? ! Not only does it have 3 gigs of ram, its DDR3 ram versus DDR2 n the Note II. Considerably faster. Note III will b slightly smaller, 1.6mm thinner <8mm, with a larger screen. Bad to the Bone… ! ! !…

Of the five reasons listed here, only one is actually valid. A bigger display? The display on the 5, which will likely be on the 5S, is just the perfect size. It’s large enough to fit what you need, while not being grotesquely over-sized. Having a phone that I can easily maneuver is a huge plus.

Storage? I’ve had a 16GB iPhone model since the 3G, and even with 500+ songs and several apps I’ve always had more space than I knew what to do with.

A removable back? I don’t know what the heck you people do with your phones, but I’ve never used my phone to the point where I ran out of battery power before I got home. Even when I did get somewhat worried, there’s always a plug nearby. Heck, some buses even have plugs now.

The multitasking point is the only valid one I see, even then it doesn’t look like either phone will have a problem with multi-tasking.

And as for the stylus, they’re rather silly. They waste time getting out, are annoying to use, and are easily lost. Why use a pen when I have fingers on hand 24/7, literally.

Apple Fan Boy….How about when the notoriously shitty apple battery doesn’t charge anymore. Can you replace it on Amazon?? Hence the removal back, which allows you to upgrade your battery and your micro SD…fanboy.

I’ve never had a single battery fail on me while using an iPhone. I cannot say the same for my old Blackberry and Android phones. And yes, I am a fan of Applie – they make good products that I like. Thank you for noticing.

Best buy doesnt know what people want … For example a iMac style desktop isn’t for gaming and thats all they have… Like best buy but not selection… It all comes down to what you want in a phone…. Not following this but you can reply

It’s all about personal choice. Millions of Note 2’s have been sold so there is a market to go with the smaller Galaxy S3 and S4.

This post is meant for people that actually use their phones. If you only have 500 songs and “several” apps then this post doesnt apply to you as you could probably still use your old Motorola Razr. And anyone who uses their phone for more than talking (99% of the population) flies through these batteries, a longer battery life was the #1 most requested feature for the new iPhone 5S.

I have an iPhone and my battery is dying all the time!! My family and friends are tired of calling me and going straight to Voicemail! I get that there are plug ins almost anywhere but nothing is worse than being somewhere that does not have one and having a completely dead battery!! If I wanted to talk while plugged into an outlet……I’d just stay home and use a landline!! I personally think the iPhone screen is not nearly big enough…especially for multitasking. Why bother if you have to squint!? Lastly, it is my opinion that the stylus is what makes the Note stand out! I am a list maker and I LOVE that I can use the stylus to make a grocery list or take notes in class. I am looking to get a new phone this week and I am SOLD on the Galaxy Note!!!! Bye Bye Apple!!

“The perfect size”. So all previous iphones had screens that were stupidly small? And you’re willing to go on record saying that if Apple make a phone with a larger screen, that’s a mistake and you won’t be buying one?

      • Trevor

        08/29/2013 at 9:33 pm

I am more than willing to say that if one of the next iPhones gets one of the obscenely large displays, notoriously a feature of various Samsung Android phones, then I would stick with the one before it, for as long as possible. The display isn’t the only reason that I’d get an iPhone over an Android/Samsung phone, but it is a pretty big one.

Just because an iphone is fulfilling your requirements doesn’t make it the better phone. I am using about 50 gb of the nearly 80 gb I have available on my note 2. I never have to charge or worry about running out of battery and finding a cable . I just swap batteries. No plugging in and awkwardly using the phone while charging. And I am using my s-pen right now to write this…and loving it…and yes I was an iphone user previously. People who still think that the iphone is better must have never tried android or, tried older versions of it. And as I said at the beginning if you only use your phone to talk, sms, listen to music and use a few apps, then yes there is nothing wrong with an iphone. But some people want, or need more…and that’s what I get with my note 2. And above all, I like the freedom to make my own choices and not be restricted to itunes.

I used to think the same thing as Trevor until I tried something better – the Note 1. I was really worried about the size until I started using it. Now I love it. I had to go back to my gs2 2 weeks ago because I dropped my phone in a river after rafting. That’s when I really realized how much I love the big screen. I’m counting down the days till they release the note 3, and I can have a usable screen again. Having said that it does depend on how you use the phone. If you haven’t filled up a 16 gb hard drive you probably don’t use it to its fullest potential. I barely have any music on mine maybe 5 GB (just don’t listen to music too often) and I still filled up nearly all of my 12 GB hard drive and 32 GB SD card on my Note 1. And finally, if a removable back makes wireless charging possible, I want that!

I had every single Iphone up to the Iphone 5 – then I switched to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2…I have no plans to ever go back to the Iphone…The Note 2 has been the most amazing smartphone for me — long lasting exchangeable battery and amazing screen along with a super fast processor, and can write and surf with the intelligent stylus…I cant wait to see what the Note 3 will offer…Cant wait to pre-order on ATT…….

apple sucks balls and so do the twits who goose step for them. it is not a status symbol to own an inferior phone any more than it is to drink tea made from cat poop……so we understand……you don’t really use your phone there for you don’t need a better one.

yep, I plan to buy the note 3, unless apple come out with some kind of stunning 6. I’ve been an iphone user since day 1, the orig iphone was groudbreaking, but now, apple just doesnt offer the best product. The screen is too small, the stylus would be awesome (newton??? c’mon apple, bring back the BEST handwriting recognition ever, bring it back!!!!). Apple could be so so so more innovative than they are. The old newtons have so much potential for the iphones today, but they just dont do it, they just put out the same crap year after year while other companies surpass them. I am buying a note 3. To hell with apple.

oh, and let’s not forget you have to jailbreak the damm thing to make any good use of it. They spend so much time trying to patch jailbreaks they’re not innovating! Why do they care how many icons you have on the home screen???

Hi, I’ve been an isheep ever since day one of the release of iphone. Every release i’m cueing in the store just to be the first owner of iphone in my work. Got the iphone 2g till iphone 3gs and it comes that I feel that there’s lacking with this
phone. The UI is boring, no customization. In short, I jailbreak it, just to make some tweak—-consequence happend? LOST my wifi signal. Then It came Galaxy s2(gs3 & gs4) into my life…I love every inch of it. I’m using gs4 now but seems like there’s still lacking, the screen size and I want to maximise the features of split screen. Watching youtube while chatting friends in facebook. So I’m looking forward for GN3. In fairness to iphone,I’m thankful because they open up the gate thru their innovation on smartphone. I’ll coming back as an loyal fan if they can surpass my expectations with them.

Love Trevors comments just because the display is “perfect” for you that doesnt mean a bigger display is a bad thing. I use my phone for about 5% taking calls the rest of the time is movies games webpages which all just work better on a bigger screen.
I have 5 64GB sd cards in my bag for my S3 and am looking to get a couple more.
The back came off my phone straight away to fit an extended battery.
Multitasking on an S3 is great on the extra screen of the note I can only imagine it is even better. Oh I forgot your IPhone cant multitask as far as I am aware.
Try taking notes in a three hour meeting with your finger a stylus is a must have.

Trevor just because your phone is right for you dont assume that it is perfect and that these features are not useful for someone else.

I have personally used both iPhones and androids. I am stuck trying to decide between the new note or the new iPhone. I am confused by the fact that androids seem to be such better phones but do not have as much of a higher turn over rate or are not worth as much as apples?! Like I could sell my iphone for $450 easily and not my galaxy note 2 for some reason even tho it’s so much better of a phone and bigger etc. is this just because it is a brand name? I don’t get it. I would love to have the note 3 if I knew I could sell it for a good amount easily whenever I want to upgrade. I just don’t understand the demand and higher aloe of the stupid iPhones.

Someone tell me why apples are worth more money then? It pisses me off knowing that apples will always have more accessories available and be more well liked when they clearly aren’t the better phones/ plus they sell faster than notes when trying to re sell after using for an upgrade etc. WHYYYY

Keri it is this odd perception that they are higher quality and only high earners want them that keeps the second hand market prices high. Myself I reuse my old android phones around the house as controllers for the TV or toilet book readers. My work issued iphone gets set to divert as I just dont get on with it I would rather work would give me a note and a bt keyboard so I can dial into my xendesktop every now and then without getting out a laptop although my transformer has taken that job now

Yes thank you. That’s what I was assuming. I can’t wait til people start to realize they’re paying more for less…. I’m going to go with the note. I think I would get more out of it. I think it’s all about the stupid brand name. I have a MacBook which I love and is better than my previous Sony but I don’t think apples iPhones measure up to their other products at all. Let alone Samsung galaxy’s.

The only thing wrong with this article is its title which should read “5 Ways the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 WILL Beat the iPhone 5S”.

Folks, why are you getting worked up about why the iPhone continues to sell? Although im sad that it means more money for Apple, the more people buy the iPhone, the more phones I’ll dwarf with my Note 3. People who say the iPhone is the perfect size have bitch hands. Leave the Note series to those who can handle its size.

  21. Keri

    08/29/2013 at 9:45 pm

There’s a reason as to why phones keep getting bigger and bigger. Popular demand. Futuristic technology. iPhones stuck in the past for little kids with small hands. They think they’re good enough to only upgrade their model once every year or two years which allows so many other models to outdo them continuously over and over again.

  22. fiddlestix

    08/30/2013 at 11:18 am

Keri the screen size getting bigger is just natural like I said I use my phone about 5% for taking calls and just asking around the office today no one would say they use it for more than 20% of the time for calls the rest is games/movies/web surffing so the bigger screen the better. There only 2 hard core iphone fans and one of those is starting to sway towards an s4 for the bigger screen

Not sure why its rarely mentioned but another reason is because the Note 3 has cooler accessories like the smart dock. If you are interested here is a demo of the Note 3 working with the Note 2 smart dock:
