GTA 5 on PS4: Sony Slips, Rockstar Retracts

Published

on

Sony excited the gaming world on Tuesday when the official Twitter account let slip news of GTA 5 on PS4 in what appeared to be the first official confirmation of GTA 5 on the PS4.

This was big news as GTA 5 was previously confirmed for the PS3 and Xbox 360, with no talk of a PC, PS4 or Xbox One release.

But, like so many things in the gaming world, the apparent GTA 5 for PS4 confirmation was a slip up by Sony.

Soon after the tweet gained nearly 500 retweets and 150 favorites Sony and Rockstar moved to take control and squelch the GTA 5 on PS4 confirmation.

Sony issued an apology for the GTA 5 on PS4 typo, pointing fans to the PS3 version of GTA 5 which arrives on September 17th.

Rockstar confirmed to Kotaku and other publications that the GTA 5 on PS4 tweet was simply a typo.

GTA 5 on PS4 is not confirmed yet as a tweet from Sony earlier this week is a typo.

For its part Rockstar is focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of GTA 5, which arrive in September and will also launch with GTA Online on October 1st.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was originally slated for a spring 2013 release, but delays are pushing it up against the PS4 release date which arrives a month after release and the rumored Xbox One release date which could be a week later.

Neither of the next generation consoles can play games designed specifically for the older consoles, which means users will need to keep an old console on hand to play GTA 5 for now.

Rockstar tip-toed around questions about GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One in a recent interview, and it would be surprising to see the company talk about any next generation versions until well after the launch of next generation consoles.

While some gamers may decide to wait for a PS4 GTA 5 release, Rockstar is working on an online system that keeps the GTA Online profile agnostic to console, so gamers may start on the PS3 or Xbox 360 and then jump to a next gen console version if and when one is released.

There is no official word on a GTA 5 on PS4, PC or Xbox One, and it would be odd to see any confirmations for new GTA 5 versions in the next several months.

That said, with the presentation of GTA 5 Online as a growing, constantly updating universe that is separate of the main GTA 5 story, there is good reason to bring that experience to the PS4 and Xbox One over the long run.

I wish they would tell us if it is going to be on next gen so I could just save my money and get it on there.

That’s exactly why they are not telling you, so they can take your money twice. But, to be honest, the game is probably going to be so good you won’t complain too much.

Such a shameful way to squeeze more money out of gamers. SSSHHHH don’t tell anyone if it will be on Next Gen, then they will have to buy it twice.

I am waiting for this game to be released on PS4 because I am confident that human greed will force the game to be Next Gen. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I’m not buying this game twice.

I think I’ll wait for the inevitable PC release of this game (even if I do end up playing it using a wireless controller and Steam’s Big-Screen mode; at least for offline play). The modding community for this series as well as the Saints Row series just keeps getting larger and better (even if stuff breaks half the time =p). To me it’s just kind of a given that we will see this game out for Xbox 1/PS4/PC sometime next year.

I don’t think it’s a matter of Rockstar “ripping off” their users either as obviously work began on the consoles it’s coming out for this year much sooner than any other work. It will be a great game, I just happen to have enough to keep me busy at the moment that I can resist to buy it now. Thanks goes out to anyone that does though, as no doubt the online features will be a test bed that Rockstar can use to improve later experiences (not to say they won’t update PS3/X360 versions as well, but there are limits)
