Poetic SlimLine Case for Nexus 7 is Lean and Attractive

Published

on

Does it make sense to put an expensive case on a low-cost device like the Google Nexus 7 2nd generation tablet? We don’t think so, and that’s why we love the Poetic Nexus 7 case for the 2nd generation Nexus 7. While the Poetic SlimLine case doest cost a lot at a bit under $20, it feels like a nice case that’s attractive and doesn’t turn a thin tablet into a brick (like so many low-cost folio style cases).

The Poetic SlimLine ($16.95 direct) looks a lot like the Apple Smart Cover or Smart Case with colorful cover options and the three folds that fold into a triangle. Users can prop up their Nexus 7 at steep angle for watching video or typing on a Bluetooth connected keyboard or at a lower angle better for reading or typing on the screen.

The cover of the SlimLine will function like the Apple Smart Case or Cover by turning off the screen when the user closes the case and waking it up when open. Three potent magnets grab the edge of the cover to hold it in place. Inside the cover we get a micro-fiber lining to protect the screen. Like the Apple cover, the SlimLine leaves two lines behind where the cover doesn’t touch the fingerprint-filled screen, leaving the skin oils behind. The case structure uses black polyurethane to protect the tablet. It’s sturdy and keeps the ports and buttons free.

Our red Poetic Slimline case looks nice despite the low-cost. Poetic offers a nice case for under $10 to $20 that doesn’t add much bulk and adds functionality, like propping the tablet as a stand and waking/sleeping the screen. We wonder if it will hold up to rigorous use over a long time, but for this price get two or even three for matching different outfits.

Magnets in the case hold the cover in place really well.

Is it any good about protection from drops though?

Austin: It surely ought to be. My N 7/12 fell face down onto what was probably a grain of sand. There were too many cracks to count. If the cover’s closed, the glass is no worry. The PU must be resilient, so that, very likely, protects it completely.

The article has a woefully-misplaced caption about magnets holding the cover closed. The accompanying image was a quite-poor choice.

I have been using this case on my nexus 7 for over a year and its been more than adequate. It has survived heavy use and the occasional drop by my 1 1/2 year old son. It adds a little weight but not much bulk so its totally worth it. There is a small tear starting at the edge of one of the folds but its very minor and doesn’t seem to be getting worse. I would say I most definitely got my money out of this case. Outstanding product!

I use my Nexus 7 on the road and have the Gumdrop case, got it over a year ago for $40.00 now 50.00. A far better case and protects the entire tablet. I have the Slimline on 2 other tablets but they stay inside. The Gumdrop is more but 3 times the ruggedness.

this case is tremendous. I have the red one pictured here, because I was tired of my corporate black shtick that I’ve been doing for years. it’s crazy light and very thin, so it doesn’t screw up the lines of the nexus, and magnetic clasp and auto shut off work perfectly.

plus it’s basically the cost of a pizza.

I’m on my second Poetic case. Both have the same issue with the vinyl edges cracking and peeling away within a couple of months. Other than that, it does protect my N7.
