iOS 7 Release Date Spells Doom and Confusion for Average iPhone Users

Published

on

Apple is set to announce the official iOS 7 release date alongside new iPhones on Tuesday. While Apple enthusiasts by and large are very excited about iOS 7, it’s going to be extremely confusing to the masses of iPhone users that have spent the last six years getting used to the ‘traditional’ iOS user interface. We expect Apple to release iOS 7 within days of the September 10 iPhone event.

There’s no question that iOS 7 has a host of new features that will improve the overall user experience, but users are going to struggle to figure them all out. This might be hard to relate to for power users that know how to navigate every corner of their iPhones, but there are many long-time iPhone users that take months or years to learn just some of the basics.

Read: Apple Prepares Staff for iOS 7 Release, New Looks and Features

Above is an iOS 7 promotional video that was released during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June.  As Apple design guru Jony Ive explains, iOS 7 is an attempt to simplify and declutter the iPhone. Apple certainly achieved that goal while adding important functionality. Literally every icon, screen and native app looks different after upgrading.  People are used to iOS updates being relatively minor in terms of the overall user interface. Apple has introduced new features to iOS with each update, but there’s never been a complete overall like iOS 7 before.  What looks like clean design to some iPhone users will induce panic in more casual users.

Apple and its partners are bracing for what’s going to be an onslaught of confused iPhone users. And by confused we mean people rushing Genius Bars insisting that their iPhones are broken. People that will be asking for iOS 6 back. Some frustrated iPhone users will surely swear off Apple and threaten to switch to Android rather than deal with the new iOS 7 interface. Of course, contracts and financial realities will make that easier said than done.

Spotlight-on-iOS-7

What’s going to frustrate some iOS 7 upgraders the most is that they’ll have to relearn how to do the simplest of tasks. For example, in iOS 6 users need to swipe once to the right from the primary home screen to open up Spotlight Search. Performing the same gesture  on iOS 7 does absolutely nothing.  Instead, iOS 7 users must swipe down on the home screen. Alternatively, iOS 6 users can press the home button to launch Spotlight Search from the home screen. Doing the same in iOS 7 does nothing.

As you can see in our iOS 7 walkthrough on an iPad, there are a whole lot of improvements over iOS 6. It’s much easier to quickly access information and change basic settings. But iOS 7 is going to test a lot of people’s patience before they can even think of learning about all fo the new features.

Do you think the iPhone users in your life will adapt well to iOS 7 initially or struggle with the big changes?

My god you’re igonorant. By all means go buy an android phone that will stop functioning after 2 months. I promise you in 2 months it will no longer work. Enjoy the larger screen while you can. I on the other hand am very happy with my iPhone 5 running iOS 7 beta 6.

You are a total idiot if you thing Android phones last two years. After two years you have to go to an Apple store and replace your battery for $150. I just remove the back of my phone and put in a fresh battery. And, what happens when you fill up the measly gb on your phone? Right, you have to delete a bunch of stuff. I just insert a new 64gb card and I am ready to go. You should come out of the dark ages of 2007 and find out what a real cell phone can do now.

hahaha i can do do the same for 20 dollars i just unscrew the back and swap out the battery if i brake my screen i can fix it there easy to understand phones unlike android were u got 1000 thousands of screws and a technique to actually replacing the screen all you have to do with a iphone is undo screw very similar to a computer the basic setup on the insides of a iphone yes u will void warranty but its so cheap to buy parts off ebay for an iphone who cares. in my case anyways for the average person who doesnt now what there are doing all they are is ripped off by phone shops and apple so android is better to certain aspects.

You sound somewhat less foolish than the other idiot :)

Hell, I have an older iPhone 3GS still being used (as an iPod), and a 4S about two years old, and the batteries have been just fine. For now. By the time they need replacing, I’ll probably be ready to upgrade anyway.

Meanwhile, keep defining yourselves by a personal preference of a smartphone, folks… This is supposed to be a “high-tech” age, but people are acting like fricken Neanderthals.

Two months huh….I dont think I’ve EVER had any phone that stopped working after two months. It’s okay if your a fanboy and what not but stop trying to exaggerate the bullshit.

Apparently ALOT of users are very satisfied with android so they must be doing something right…especially since iOS now has quite a few Android features now…smh

Been using Android since 2009. Not one phone has ever stopped working after 2 months. That is one lofty promise. Maybe I’m holding them wrong. My first one died after two years. The rest are still ticking to this day. Even my old Nexus One still works just fine.

        “My god you’re igonorant.”

You “promise” an Android phone will “no longer work” “in 2 months”??

Talk about f***ing ignorant! Every Android phone user I know (several) has been using their phones with no major issues FOR YEARS AND YEARS.

Stoopid, foolish people DEFINING THEMSELVES by their personal preference of a smartphone. PATHETIC.

For the record, I’ve been mostly very happy with my iPhone 4S, but its JUST A FRICKEN smartphone, for god’s sake.

I jumped ship a year ago, and I had to wait 9 months before I could steal an upgrade from one of my other lines on my account. I had never been so happy to get my hands on another iPhone. Android S!@# in my opinion, you couldn’t give me one for free.

Obesity? 6’3″ and 290# is not obese. Evidently you are one of those pencil thin womanly men with skinny jeans and spidery delicate fingers. I am a tall thin guy and have tons of trouble with my loaner iPhone…I can’t stand the mini screen. I’m eagerly awaiting the new Nexus so I can sell this POS and get back to real quality and performance.

I love my iPhone. I’ve never had an issue with the battery on my 3G that only took 5years for the battery to wear out. The 4G is still working for someone else who I sold it to for $264!! Talk about value. That was 3 years old. Now I’m on my iPhone 5!! I love it and since I’ve had them for so long I don’t think I’m an idiot that can’t handle the new great changes! The author is underestimating our intellect.

Larger screens are nice for some things, but are awkward in some instances. I would like maybe a little larger screen, but I wouldn’t change the OS. I been using IOS 7 beta 6 and I love it. The only thing I don’t like about Apple is the way they give little improvements with these mid class upgrades to generate that much more revenue. Example iPhone 4s, iPhone 5s, which have little improvements. I think the iPhone 5c is a great idea, a much better design for kids and people on a much tighter budget.

I think this article is hyping the change up too much. People haven’t “spent the last six years getting used to” iOS, but have been using it without much trouble. I got my Dad the 4S last year and I’ve had two questions from him about it, whereas we’ve had all sorts of trouble with his Android tablet. People will complain but I don’t think it will take that long to learn the new UI.

Jump ship seriously!! Android users are all cheap just like there foolish devices! Adapting to the new IOS 7 will be nothing new to anyone that has common sense to realize technology will be updated over the years! I love my iphone and I love apple but we have to admit the previous IOS softwares were getting very boring so who wouldn’t want something new to look at?! I’m excited for the new IOS 7 release and will be getting the 5S in January on my upgrade!!

Your a disgrace to the name jayy sir… we are not cheap we just dont like stupid over controlling hipster sheep telling us theyre better then us… how are we cheap? A new iphone costs 600-700$ per say and some android phones cost just as much? Your words are irrelevant and your mind has been brainwashed. Stay in your pen id rather be free and open to do what I want with my phone instead of some dumb fruit company tell me what I want… Alas we all have a choice and if you think your a better person then someone because of your phone you are SERIOUSLY PATHETIC…

Frustrated and confused users? Sooooo, Apple should no longer strive for the premier spot in the smart phone market? Keep stale and just tread water? The author’s stance in this article is what’s far-fetched and confusing. Users will not need to read a manual let alone “beg for ios6 back.” 3 finger swipes changed and the weather app is prettier. Bring on ios7.

For apple just to stay level with all android and all others here are a few features they should had years ago, a higher resolution screen of 1980 by 1200 not the old 1260 by 640 and a 2 mp camera front and a 13 mp camera rear or more and a 5 inch screen also a removable battery and a 2 gb ram prosesor not the current slow 1 gb , also water and dust resistant and a mini sd card slot for added memory!!! This is just a few apple should had done long ago a new car changes every year why not iPhone?? All the greed and $$$$$ apple has they still and alway will lag behind all!!

I work for verizon and see many different demographics through out the week. I love the competition android and apple and now even windows phones bring to the table. I don’t care what phone you want just be happy and humble with it. Gotta say tho, my first smart phone was iphone 4 and I loved it and this time I have a galaxy S 4 love it! Who knows mayb next time ill get a windows phone change is good. So for all you narrowed minded goofs out there who think your OS is better save your breath bc they all do the same basic functionalitys a good phone needs to do. What the hell is spotlight good for? If you know the name of the app you are looking for just fire up Siri and say, “launch [any app name]” and it fires right up. Much faster that way. Am I missing something? I’ve never used Spotlight once and I know my iPhone well.

I work at the largest cellular phone company as a sales rep and I am really not looking forward to the iOS 7 update. If you’re in the least bit techie you may have a difficult time understanding the ridiculous things people come into our stores frustrated about. I am STILL getting angry customers coming in asking, “Where’d my blue arrow go for my GPS?” on their Android devices after the last Google Maps update over a month ago. I had one customer threaten to leave Verizon because we couldn’t get his Google Maps “back to normal”. Seriously.

My first smartphone ever was an iPhone 3GS, I loved it.. Next phone, iPhone 4S, then the HTC One. I’m not saying anything bad, but that Android was so confusing. It was all right, but the operating system wasn’t as satisfying as iOS, maybe cause I’m so use to the iPhone, but nevertheless a week after owning a nice huge and beautiful looking phone. I gave up the HTC One for an iPhone 5. I’m excited for the new iOS and I’m sure it will be a new refreshing experience of the outdated operating system. I’m sure I won’t have a problem with learning it, it shouldn’t be a big deal. This article is useless, it can’t be that hard. It’s like owning an iPhone for the first time. Simple and easy to learn. On another note, I wish people would quit arguing about which smartphone is the best. It’s a matter of taste and for real we’re so spoiled with the nice phone and crap. I have big fingers and the screen for the iPhone 5 isn’t a problem for me. A phone is a phone and the iPhone does what I want it to do. If it stops doing that then it’s time to get a new phone then. No big deal.

Really people? This is why I hate tech blog sits. You have dumb, immature adults who come on and create a war out of nothing. It’s just a phone. Why not talk about something ethical like the war going on in Egypt right now?

For starters, let me clear the air with android and apple. One, apple was in its prime stage when they first came out. They were just experimenting. You have companies like Samsung and Sony who take ideas of the what was not thought of. All of these pointless features on Samsung are cool, and sure… They do give a bit of freedom. However, it’s only as cool and useful as the person using it. What Samsung people call too expensive and ruling is what I call a polished, concerned for their users company. What apple apps cheap and too much to deal with is what I call an innovative, tech guru company. It’s your preference. I just had a dream about me rocking a galaxy. It’s was nice. Infact, I wish I had it. Although, the only thing I felt proud of was the larger screen. Things were slow and such… And also having experience with the phone in reality, I can say the same thing outside of this dream. So stop arguing, grow up, talk about something productive… Not phones, and just pick a phone. It’s just a phone. Not a life. I’m only 15… Lets see how many ignorant adults comment on my comment.

(I should have just kept rolling on… My time was wasted >_>)

No way, I will never go to Android. While I know some people who are happy with their Android I know a lot more who have problems, and have had to change out their phones every 6 months. My iphone 4s has been through so much such as drops and spilling water on it, and its still works just fine after its been 2 years .I passed up on the 5 because I didn’t need to upgrade the phone at the time since it had only been a year and was working just fine. My brother used android for a few years and only recently switched to apple this past year and he says it was the best decision he made. He was tired of having to take his phone in for repairs or waiting for Tmobile to send him a new phone to replace his phone thatthey couldn’t fix or figure out what was wrong with. I also have another friend who has an android, she has had to replace it twice this year alone, its only Aug, and continues to have problems with it. She is waiting for the Iphone release to use her upgrade. Honestly thereare people who hate Iphone and switch and people who hate Android and switch. Its really preference, but from my experience I love Iphones and do not plan on switching after seeing my friends experience problems with their androids. While some are nice, they do no appeal to me.

Really, I learned how to use an iphone quite quickly compared to an Android. All my friends who have Android and never used Apple products figured out how to use my phone in a matter of minutes, while I on the other hand have to ask how to get to the damn youtube on some of their phones. Apple is so simple, this article is ridiculous. It not going to take a rocket scientist to figure out how to use the new IOS.

You will get most of the new features but obviously not everything ! Some features like finger print reader are only supported by the latest iPhone which in this case would be 5S but there won’t be too many of them. In some cases they decide to take out some features to avoid performance issue. I won’t be surprised to see not all the new visual effects are supported on 4 or 4S.

You mean ‘biased’. Surely. I agree however.

The argument of usability is kind of weak to me. You have to get used to any device/system you experience for the first time. I don’t really think the new iOS will be that hard to learn, Apple has always been quite user friendly in my opinion. Plus figuring out how to use new features on a brand new interface is half the fun.

It works in pretty much the same way as previous versions of iOS, the biggest change is that the icons look different and while there are new features like control centre etc as well as gestures the vast bulk of iOS works in the same way as it did in the past.

It’s this whole alarmist attitude to change that’s kinda worrying, we’ve had the same reaction to Windows 8 and all this garbage from blogs about it being the new Vista in the last year, when the truth is Windows 8 beyond the start screen is a damn fine desktop OS, I’ve been using it for a year with zero crashes, and benefits like fantastic boot times and excellent driver support with genuinely useful things like improved Windows Explorer which makes browsing through folder etc much easier, much better detailed task manager, built in antivirus, built in support for ISOs, you can merge multiple hard drives into one etc etc. But that start screen makes peoples brains bleed apparently. It took me a total of one hour to work out charms and new keyboard commands, the ribbon interface for menus and folders is not that different from what we see in Office since 2007, and I genuinely like Win 8.

All these tech blogs are no better than Perez Hilton and they’re killing adventure and risk taking. They keep going on about the start menu on Win 8 and ignore everything else, we’re getting this with iOS7 and it’s not even been tried by most of the public. 10-20 years ago, companies used to take risks but because of idiot bloggers who scream and shout before a final version of software is even released we’re getting boring software changes these days from a lot of companies, I mean Apple don’t take any risks with OSX anymore, I haven’t used a Mac since 2007, and I’m using Mountain Lion at the moment which is great but apart from the new launch pad it’s not changed a great deal in terms of UI, I’m certain Apple have been scared off by what happened with Win 8 and we’re not going to get radical UI changes on OSX because of that.

This article is really making mountains out of molehills, people are not THAT stupid (ok maybe some are..), the changes and tweaks are not significant enough for people to be so confused they don’t know how to use it. I have the ios 7 beta 6, took only half a day to get used to all the new features and it was smooth sailing from there on. Honestly, I would be really more worried about human intelligence in general if a lot of people find it confusing.
