iPhone 5S vs. Galaxy Note 3: 7 Ways Apple’s New iPhone Could Win

Published

on

In just a few short weeks, Apple’s new iPhone 5S will be met head on with a new Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy Note 3. Both devices will be powerful and will have their advantages but there are some key areas where the iPhone 5S could beat the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Last year, we saw Apple and Samsung go head-to-head with the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S3. This year, more of the same as Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 have been battling for supremacy in the U.S. market for most of the year. And in just a few short weeks, we will see the companies collide once again as Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 3 is likely going to challenge the iPhone 5S alongside the Samsung Galaxy S4.

In Berlin, Germany last week, Samsung announced the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a replacement for the Galaxy Note 2 that on paper, appears to improve on it in just about every single way. The device is coming with a massive 1080p display, powerful stylus-enhanced software, upgraded multitasking, a faster processor, more RAM, a better camera, and a new design that is both slimmer and lighter than the previous model.

Here are some ways that the iPhone 5S could beat the Galaxy Note 3.

Here are some ways that the iPhone 5S could beat the Galaxy Note 3.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Note 3 has a firm release date in the U.S. as it will be heading to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon in October. Even Verizon has announced a specific Galaxy Note 3 release date.

This imminent release date means that it will likely be extremely close to another big time release in the U.S., the iPhone 5S release date, which is expected to be delivered on or around September 20th.

Last year’s Galaxy Note 2 didn’t hit the U.S. until late October and November, more than a month after the iPhone 5 arrived. This means that the sparks will be flying even higher this year as consumers try and decide between the iPhone 5S, Galaxy Note 3 and a host of other devices on shelves.

There will be many that will be looking to pick up either the iPhone 5S and the Galaxy Note 3. Each will have its strengths and here, just a day ahead of the iPhone 5S launch event, we take a look at ways the iPhone 5S could beat the Galaxy Note 3.

Design

All signs point to the iPhone 5S retaining the same design as the iPhone 5 which means that the iPhone 5S design should come with a few big advantages over the Galaxy Note 3’s design.

While Samsung has slimmed down the Galaxy Note 3 and made it more lightweight, it’s 168 grams and 8.3mm thin as opposed to the 180 gram and 9.3mm Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy Note 3 is still going to be a massive device, much larger and much heavier than the iPhone 5S. The Galaxy Note 3’s new faux leather design also looks nice, but it’s still made out of plastic.

The iPhone 5S is taking shape as we come within a month of the rumored iPhone 5S launch.

The iPhone 5S is expected to retain the iPhone 5S’ design.

Apple’s iPhone 5 design is a marvel as it not only comes with a premium design made out of aluminum, it also comes with a design that weighs only 112 grams and checks in at 7.1mm thin. That makes it a much easier device to carry around, particularly in ones pocket. The Galaxy Note 3 isn’t exactly a tablet but it’s getting there.

What’s more is that the massive 5.7-inch display makes the Galaxy Note 3 footprint much larger than the 4-inch iPhone 5, and likely, the iPhone 5S. This means that the iPhone 5 is much easier to hold in one hand.

Carriers

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be coming to AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, T-Mobile and Verizon though it looks like it may not come to any smaller carriers in the U.S., something that happened with the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Note.

The iPhone 5S should land on a host of carriers.

The iPhone 5S should land on a host of carriers.

On the other hand, the iPhone 5S will likely be coming to all five of those carriers, plus a host of regional and pre-paid carriers like C Spire and Cricket Wireless, something that will offer consumers even greater choice when it comes to picking up a new smartphone.

Price

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, as expected, has landed with a premium price tag thanks to its massive display and its bundled S Pen stylus which is a key component to the Galaxy Note 3 experience.

Carriers not called T-Mobile will be offering it up for $299.99 on-contract, far more expensive than the iPhone 5. With the iPhone 5S expected to retain a starting price tag of $199.99, the iPhone 5S will likely be cheaper making it more attractive to those that are searching for a smartphone while on a budget.

There will be Galaxy Note 3 price drops but we won’t see $100 slashed off the price right off the bat which should make the iPhone 5S the cheaper option, at least at the beginning.

Longevity

One of the perks of buying an iPhone is the software support that the device gets over time. Apple typically keeps its iPhones update for three years before discontinuing software support. What this means is that the iPhone 5S, which is coming with iOS 7, should see support through iOS 10, should Apple release it.

The Galaxy Note 3 software situation is far more unclear. In the past, we’ve seen Samsung struggle to keep its Galaxy Note models updated, likely due to the large display and the complicated software that is on board. In fact, the Galaxy Note 2 hasn’t seen a single major software update since its arrival last year. It remains on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The original Galaxy Note has also been stagnant and has only received one major update since it hit the U.S. back in 2011. It’s unclear if it will be going any further but if it does, its next update will likely be its last.

The uncertainty and Samsung’s failings in this department could make the iPhone 5S the safer choice for those that want a device that is continually updated with major updates and bug fixes.

Fingerprint Reader

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was rumored to have a fingerprint reader on board but that ultimately did not pan out. The iPhone 5S is heavily rumored to have a fingerprint reader on board, something that could prove to be a huge benefit to the device’s security.

Apple's fingerprint reader could be a powerful security feature.

Apple’s fingerprint reader could be a powerful security feature.

Samsung made it a point to drive home the fact that the Galaxy Note 3 has Samsung’s Knox on board but the software is aimed mainly at enterprise. A fingerprint reader on board the iPhone 5S, particularly one found embedded in the home button, could help to protect iPhone 5S users of all shapes and sizes in a convenient and effective manner.

Apple typically doesn’t bring gimmicks to its hardware and software so if there is a fingerprint reader on board, it’s likely going to be powerful and useful for most iPhone users.

Storage

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 will more than likely come with one storage option and one storage option only, a 32GB model that will allow users to expand with a 64GB microSD card. That means users will be able to get 96GB of total storage. There are, however, limitations to the microSD card that severely limit what users can store on there.

For example, we just moved a 60MB game to the microSD card, but when we moved a Twitter app that had accumulated 300MB in data, it just moved a 4MB app, not the data. This is something that is implemented by Google, not Samsung.

The Galaxy Note 3 storage options may not be as strong as the iPhone 5S'.

The Galaxy Note 3 storage options may not be as strong as the iPhone 5S’.

The iPhone 5S will more than likely come in at least three storage variants, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Files of all shapes and sizes can be stored on there meaning the 64GB option is going to be fantastic for those that download apps, movies and more.

There is also talk of a 128GB iPhone 5S, something that could best the Galaxy Note 3’s storage as well.

Accessories

Samsung has done a valiant job of getting a wide range of accessories out to its new devices, the Galaxy Note 3 included, but we expect the Apple accessory machine to put the Galaxy Note 3 options to shame.

Spigen iPhone 5 cases should fit the iPhone 5S according to the company's Japanese website.

Spigen iPhone 5 cases should fit the iPhone 5S according to the company’s Japanese website.

What we mean is that we should see some quality accessories for the Galaxy Note 3, but where the Galaxy Note will have one or two options, the iPhone 5S should have four, five or six.

Overall, the Apple accessory ecosystem is much stronger than the one found on Android, and we could see iPhone 5S accessories beat the Galaxy Note 3’s in terms of quality and quantity as accessory makers look to capitalize on Apple’s biggest ever iPhone launch.

Horribly biased review!! Might as well say ‘Apple is paying me and Samsung is not. I’m going to slant my comments to the one that’s paying me!’ You failed to mention that while iPhone buyers may select more memory, they’re looking at $100 more for each bump up! I like my iPhone, but the Galaxy Note 3 appears to be MUCH more innovative than iPhone. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Good point “iMayJumpShip.” Another thing wrong with this article is that he failed to do his research in stating that the Note 3 is limited to 32GB of internal storage. The Note 3 is available in 32GB and 64GB internal storage options. Add on the expandable storage of 64GB and you have a very nice 128GB.

To be very clear, I own an iPhone 4S and my wife has an iPhone 4. I will probably get the iPhone 5S (or whatever comes out tomorrow) because I have a lot invested already in apps and music through iTunes and Apple.

That being said, how can we compare these two devices anyways? Obviously the iPhone is smaller than the Galaxy Note 3…different device. I would compare it more to an iPad Mini with phone capabilities. And keeping the same exact design but changing colors is hardly a good thing in my opinion.

As for carriers, big whoop. They both share the same common “big players” and the little guys don’t really account for much. Point moot.

Price. For a 32GB model of both phones, the price is going to be $299. Let’s compare apples to apples here. Sure, if you wanted to spend less the iPhone has an option for that and the Note 3 does not. Shouldn’t be buying the latest phone then anyways, again, in my opinion.

Longevity, really? When most apple cronies go get the latest and greatest every year anyways (this coming from an Apple user)…again, point moot.

Fingerprint reader…how many people are actually going to use this thing (thinking of Siri and Apple Maps) and further, I am sick of being Apple’s test dummy for Beta (hell, Alpha) products. Who really cares right now?

Storage. Really? Yeah, a 64GB microSD card is $50 on Amazon right now, making the Note 3 with 96GB of storage about $350. Or I could get the 64GB iPhone for $400 or spend even more (about $500) for the 128GB version should it come out. Trumps the price argument also.

And Accessories. Im not even going to bother. If “accessories” are a plus for you, good for you.

This should have been titled, “I have to get an article written by today and I have been too lazy to write anything of real value.” I hope you don’t get paid to write this stuff.

Thank you! Finally someone that is an Apple person that makes a great argument and is opened minded. If anyone ever calls you an Isheep they are dead wrong. Me personally I don’t like the Iphone and Apple products because on how restricted and expensive they are. Apple wants way too much money for all of their products.

Yes, the Note 3 is in a different category then the Iphone 5S. The Galaxy S4 is more of the same category due to size. People (like myself) like big screens and want an all in one phone gets a phone like the Note 3. I don’t want to buy a Tablet and a phone. Even though the Note 3 isn’t as big a the smallest tablet (I do wish it was a 6″ not a 5.7″) but it is big enought to do internet stuff and watch Netflix. If I decide I need a bigger screen then I can wirelessly or wire up to any brand tv.

I know you have investment with your Apps and ITunes. But you can transfer music to a media player from ITunes and the Android phones like Samsung play any MP3 and media player music. Also (I don’t know what Apps you have) some Apps that the Iphone has you have to pay for where Android has for free. I would look in to that because the switch over may be more painless then you are thinking and the reward might be more greatly. Oh even though Apple doesn’t make it easy but the Android phones do work with Apple computers.

Apple Iphone continues to fall behind the top flagship Android (mainly Samsung) phones. If Apple doesn’t get their butt in gear you might have to make that change over later down the road. I have the Galaxy Note 2 and when I show my Iphone friends on what my phone can do. They wished they didn’t get their Iphone 5. The Galaxy Note 3 is an even better phone especially if you are a business person. The Iphone was an awesome phone back in 2010 but it 2now 2013.

You are absolutely right with what you had written in your comment. I’m glad you had written it. But honestly I would look in to the Note 3 before you decide on the Iphone 5S if the phone isn’t too big for you.

      09/10/2013 at 7:34 pm

      Hey Engineer,
It’s funny that you use the Apple Iphone and stated that you’ll likely buy the 5S, yet you aren’t biased or an “Isheep” or “SSheep”. I like that you can be very open minded and discuss the pros and cons of either product and choose the one that’s right for you, like an intelligent consumer should.

In my opinion both of these phones are great. The apple Iphone was my first smartphone after some thorough research between Apple and Blackberry and it was an amazing phone. It blew my mind as to how good it was. It was like having a mini computer in your pocket, always available when you needed it. But then I found it’s limitations…such as no voice by voice navigation for GPS, no Adobe support so you can’t really open that website to look at that particular restaurant menu that you and some friends are considering going to. The many restrictions on what you can do with the phone, how you can organize your apps, etc.

But the weaknesses are also the strengths, because Apple filters everything that goes on their phone, you have a phone that rarely crashes, a phone that is super smooth, and a phone that is incredibly easy to use. It has only 1 physical button! Also, this is rarely mentioned but Apple supports so many different languages natively, so if you have someone who doesn’t speak English well, you can just change the phone to whatever language they speak!

Samsung Galaxy note 3, where do I start? The note 2 was amazing! In contrast to Apple, it rarely has any limitations. Simple example, your home screen is your canvas. Put whatever you like on there, perhaps a weather forecast system that self updates, and even shows real time 3D weather effects such as rain/snow/clouds to reflect the weather. Have a significant other that you want displayed on your phone as a digital photo frame, set it so that the photo frame is split into 4 frames, each with a different group of pictures, maybe 1 of your family, 1 frame of your friends, 1 of your lover, the skies the limit. maybe you dont want a photo frame with 4 different frames, ok, change it to 3, or 5 or 8. whatever you like. I could go on about the stylus, about transferring and sharing with a bump, but these are mainstream features that are commonly advertised.

The point is, pick the phone that you like, ask your friends, read comparison articles from valid sources, read more than one source for valid opinions that are unbiased. Pick the product that makes you happy.

Such a biased and foolish review that I have ever seen. If u want your OS to be the same for three years and keep looking for some new version with bugs good for you. In general, Android is an open source and provides lot of development in different angles so it is innovative. Well, I’m not a hater of iPhone but just changing some colors on the phone panel and using some gold metal is not gonna work out for the money you spend man. Apple has a strong foundation of being creative but now are they running out of it. Thank god that they still have a strong hold on ipads.

There are 2 type of shitty journalists, one that is biased, and another that use outright lie to prove their point.

“In fact, the Galaxy Note 2 hasn’t seen a single major software update since its arrival last year. It remains on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.”

Galaxy note 2 is currently on version 4.2.2 and is rumored to get to version 4.3 in October.

Adam Mills is the 2nd type.

The apple vs android argument is lame. You droidheads use a suped up Kia. iPhone users have the elegant Mercedes Benz.
As for “bugs”, name one bug that hasn’t been immediately addressed or fixed by Apple. I’ll start a list for android bugs and when I’m finished (I wouldn’t live long enough to finish it) I’ll compare it to your list of nothing.

    • cp

      09/11/2013 at 1:49 am

You might be right. Some Android phone user probably not drive Mercedes Benz because he drive Porsche turbo, and Viper.

It is an irrelevant point. You might want to borrow the galaxy note 3 and play with it for a while to understand the convenience of the device. Be careful you may no longer be iphone fan.

No one will mentioned this aspect to you that iphone does not create pictures which have true colors like original subjects. Somehow apple phone rendering those pictures more pale. To a business owner who show the clients many samples every day, it’s a failure performance by the phone.

Here’s one more thing android phone could handle many versions of imported media such movies, pictures, music in different format without bothering conversion through itune( Including 2013 sony 1080i camcorder, and nikon d7000)

Transferring files back and forth between android phone and pc, laptop is also a piece of cake.

Online banking and inventory work with spreadsheet is more convenient with larger screen.

Too big as a phone bringing up to your ear to answer your phone calls? Use wireless headset. I can voice comments my android flawlessly from 50 yards while cleaning garden.

Connecting to big screens tv is flawlessly too.

What? Do people seriously get paid for articles like this? I have owned every iPhone since the 3GS (consider me a sheep) and for the first time I’m considering bypassing the 5S and getting the Note 3 instead. I’m tired of Apple selling me the same thing again, with the same dwarf screen, the same limited OS, the same ridiculously useless “innovations” like Siri (which nobody uses) or fingerprint scanner (which nobody will).

And there are actually ridiculous “arguments” here. You say the iPhone is 100 dollars less, BUT WITH 16 GB LESS AND A 4″ SCREEN.

    This makes no sense.

Ever heard of the galaxy gear? Sure the iPhone has a lot of cases and and different cables, but does it have a completely different device that is connected to the phone and can answer calls and take pictures as they happen? No. Let me know when apple comes out with something like that. I have have an iPhone 4s currently and I also have an iPad 2 I am selling them both to pay for my galaxy note 3.

u do know that the note 3 targets a specific group of individuals right? samsung started this whole phablet race to help business driven individuals better handle their tasks. your justifications as to why the 5s will be better are complete bs. samsung will most likely impliment the update they rolled out to s4’s to allow for storage of app data on sd cards…fingerprint readers are overrated. theyve been used on laptops with little success. apples boring design might woo the simple minded individual but no one else…u actually talk about the lack of carrier support? im sure samsung knows that signing deals with two bit companies like cspire wont lose them millions..and as far as size is concerned, people who prefer the 4″ screen to the 5.7″ SAMOLED HD is either limiting theirselves or is comitted to apple (like u are)..sorry but all of your arbitrary statements are complete BS…

I have an iphone 4s and i am sick to death of being fed the same crap of a phone every quarter by apple. They take what android has done for years, make it look pretty and then say “look we invented something new!” And iphone users are so simple minded and defensive of their apple products that they buy it without realiziug that there are truly amazing phones on the market. And crap reviewers like you feed the hype that keeps people using dinosaur technology content with their half assed devices. This was so biased and really just ridiculous. These phones are going to be so different it doesn’t just not make sense to compare them its just wrong. The 5s is going to look and be exaclty like the 5. The galaxy note 3 may not be a far cry from the note 2 but it looks and feels different and has been stepped up in major ways spec wise. I do appreciate apples products for build and simplicity but ive already preordered my note 3 and im not even holding my breath for the unveiling of the 5s because i already know what its going to look and feel like. Its not anythin new from the last 3 years.

I am so glad I sold my iPhone 5! Especially if they’re releasing the exact same design. And the aluminium design may look great, but it gets damaged and scratched so easily you have to use a case so you can’t even see it’s great design. Going to get the Note 3 when it is released as I am sick of Apple now.

Samsung G. Note 3 is currently THE BEST phone out there. I am an apple fan, but there’s no way they’ll represent something bigger than that today. Especially when the concepts are leaked already, and not many will buy the plastic version i am pretty sure. They should have made the screen bigger instead of downgrading the material.

Samsung galaxy note 3 is more than a phone. Its like a small pc in your pocket. An amazing, beautiful device. Tough expensive.

Such a silly review but i will give this to Apple they got to sell a phone with a easy operating system in a nice package to many people because it is easy to use and that is what people like it so bad (most common, lacy and old people that don’t like to struggle learning how to use a phone in better ways). How I said nice and easy to deal phone but you are paying way to much for a phone that looks nice with a mediocre hardware an software that give you the idea that you have a premium phone that it is not for the new standards.
Like any company will try to give sell you and get the most from you for less and in that Apple is really good at it but people start to realize that there are better phones options and start wanting for more for their money (smart and kind of geek people that knows more about good features and software in a phone) no ISheep that thinking they are smart and because they are holding an Iphone make them better.
Don’t think I hate Apple i just to love their phones a lot and I think they were the best till the IPhone 3G (thanks Steve Jobs for that) but after a while it got boring and doesn’t feet my needs anymore.

Apple was a revolutionary device when it came out, and I stuck with it as long as I could, but these days it’s almost exactly the same as it was when it first came out with no real significant improvements. All in all, it’s more of a phone you get for your grandma due to its simplicity. I would continue to use it if I were afraid of technology advancing. The opinions in this article are super lame, and if the tables were reversed, I’m sure you could come up with at least 150 different points on how the note 3 is better than any iPhone, and I’m sure better accessories would not be on that list! Lol to this article

Here is my view of the basic… Apple has good points, Samsung has good points… As a reviewer you suck, that is all and carry on…

Adam Mills, go hang yourself right now for being an idiot. None of your points are valid, iPhones are cheaper while Note 3 is outrageously expensive to you? What a moron…and for the fingerprint scanner being cutting edge for security…really? Nobody ever really uses it on their laptop or Motorola Atrix…so much for that.

I’m anxiously awaiting my note 3, and have never owned an iPhone. Let’s be honest for a second in the interest of fairness. Saying the 5s is the same old stuff is flat wrong. It’s hardware is going to be super elegant. First 64bit chip in a phone. The graphics acceleration is going to be awesome, and if you thought previous iPhones were smooth, I’d bet the farm this phone will be a marvel of speed and sophistication.

I’ll have one eye covered as I navigate my new note hoping TouchWiz hasn’t bogged it down. If it can’t run smoothly on this latest chipset, what does that say about its design? That said, I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. Can’t wait for my note 3!

I completely agree. This is a completely biased review. Where are the pictures of the Note 3? Where are the side-by-side comparisons? The review of the accessories can not even be called a review. Here is what it says: “…but we expect the Apple accessory machine to put the Galaxy Note 3 options to shame.” Seriously? You don’t even know what the accessories are and you are giving Apple the win with “we expect”? Good grief. What a waste of bandwidth.

I had been the hardcore fan of apple since the invention of iphone. My iphone 5 is 3rd iphone set i have along with ipod touch. However, this review is the most biased review i have ever come across with. This is the first time I am so disappointed on it’s new release specifically 5C which is a deception for me (iphone 5 would have been priced at $100 less after 5s release, but no, discontinue iphone 5, make cheapest (manufacturing-wise) iphone 5C and sell at iphone 5 price seemed to be the theme). So while i was thinking of iphone 5s alternatives and so was googling note 3 vs iphone 5s, i came across this article and was laughing may ass off while reading it.

I think Iphone 5S is itself a good phone but in now way it is superior to note 3.

In overall, Iphone 5S is good, Galaxy Note 3 is good, only this review sucks….

If you are handicap and only got 1 arm use an iphone. if you are normal and have both hands you need the note 3. In conclusion most iphone users nowadays are old people who really can’t use computer don’t blame them for liking iphones lol

this is the stupidest review on the planet. I hate I ever even read this article the iphone 5s is garbage compared to the galaxy note 3 samsung Samsung has technology that the iPhone is a few years behind on iPhone the first phone to have a have that fingerprint scanner. please that’s old technology thats going to backfire on them because the Android phones have to have that
nice try Apple but you need to try harder and as far that lame review from a hardcore iPhone lover. they can take it and shove it. can’t wait for my Galaxy Note 3.
