Nexus 5 Rumors Continue to Swirl

Published

With the Nexus 4 now discontinued, the path is clear for a new Nexus smartphone. And while Google isn’t talking about the Nexus 5 quite yet, Nexus 5 rumors continue to swirl ahead of its eventual release.

Yesterday, Google officially stopped selling the Nexus 4 as the 16GB Nexus 4 went out of stock on the Google Play Store and likely won’t return given how close we likely are to a new Nexus smartphone launch. For months, rumors have suggested that Google has at least one new Nexus smartphone up its sleeve and over the past few weeks, Nexus 5 rumors have centered around a new device from LG.

Two recent FCC filings suggest that the device that was spotted in Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat video may actually be a real smartphone and one that will be coming to shelves in the near future. Yesterday, we saw the device appear in the wild for the first time ahead of its launch, a leak that may have been a controlled leak, given how close the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C release date is.

The Nexus 5 leaks aren’t done as the device has been spotted lurking in a GFX Benchmark. Benchmarks can be faked but we have, in the past, seen Google’s devices hit benchmarks ahead of their release. What this means is that the Google Nexus 5, codenamed “Hammerhead,” that is listed here could be the real deal.

Features contained in the benchmark align with Nexus 5 rumors. We see a 1080p display listed, Key Lime Pie which is now known as Android 4.4 KitKat, and an Adreno 330 CPU which points to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor being on board. All three of those have been heavily rumored to be on board the Nexus 5.

Rumors have suggested that the Android 4.4 KitKat update might make an appearance with the Nexus 5 on October 14th which means that these features could very well be confirmed in just a few days time. A device thought to be the Nexus 5 recently passed through Wi-Fi certifications so it could be that the Nexus 5 release date is inching closer as well.

Nexus 5 whispers also have suggested that there could be a Motorola Nexus, different from the Moto X, that appears sometime in Q4. Thus far, the Motorola Nexus, if it exists, hasn’t made an appearance.
