The iPhone 5s is now available to order online and pickup at a local Apple Store, sidestepping the current shipping delays until October — that is if you can find one in stock.
Apple added the option for personal pickup to the iPhone 5s checkout page today, just as reports predicted over the weekend.
With the new iPhone 5s in store pickup option users can check to see if the iPhone 5s is in stock at a local Apple Store from the web or from the Apple Store app.
In our checks this morning the gold iPhone 5s remains out of stock in most zip codes in San Francisco, Ohio and New York for all carriers and in every size, but we are able to locate many space gray and silver iPhone 5s models in these same areas. That said, the quantities remain limited thanks to a weekend of blockbuster sales so users may not find the specific capacity they are looking for at their local Apple Store.
To buy an iPhone 5s online for in store pickup, users should head to the iPhone 5s page and select the color, capacity and carrier they want, but instead of hitting Add to Cart, click Check Availability right below the continue button. From here you can enter a zip code to search Apple Stores nearby for one with that model in stock.
This system will not let you order an iPhone 5s to be delivered and held at a local store, but instead reserves one from the stock at that store. The selection will vary from store to store and throughout the day as sales are made and as iPhone 5s shipments come in.
Users can pickup the iPhone 5s within an hour in most cases, but Apple recommends waiting for the pickup notification email before going to the store. Shoppers who live far away from an Apple Store that they select for personal pickup do not need to immediately go to the store, as Apple will hold the iPhone 5s for several days. Apple support tells us an order placed today would be held until Sunday.
While it is still all but impossible to find a gold iPhone 5s at a retail store, diligent users may be able to find the gold iPhone 5s before November, and without paying exorbitant eBay prices.
Apple, carriers and third-party retailers sold out of the iPhone 5s in most colors and capacities on Friday when sales started, and this morning Apple announced that it sold 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units during opening weekend.
