iOS 7, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c set Apple Records

It wont come as much of a surprise to the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c users who stood in long lines for hours this past weekend to get their devices, however is now confirming what last week’s record lines alluded to, the new devices and iOS 7 represent its biggest launch ever.

In a new press release on the company’s website, Apple makes no attempt at modesty, trumpeting that following this weekend’s launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, the company sold a total of 9 million devices. The company isn’t talking about how much of that number is the lower-cost iPhone 5c, though at just $100 cheaper than the iPhone 5s, it’s not likely that the company sees a big differences between the two financially.

For reference, the previous record of iPhones sold during launch weekend belongs to the iPhone 5 with 5 million sold. Although Apple has managed to nearly double launch weekend sales, it should be noted that it’s slightly unfair to compare this year’s launch with last year. The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c launched in more markets this time around – including China, where the company has never made it’s phones available at launch.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c aren’t the only thing that Apple has to brag about. Since its launch, Apple’s iOS 7 has been downloaded and installed on 200 million devices. Regardless of platform, that number is hugely impressive, especially in the face of the relatively slow upgrade curve for Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Google’s Android.

Even though both of those companies issue operating system updates rather quickly, it sometimes takes users months to get them. 200 million updated, is definitely a win for Apple’s strategy of controlling both the hardware and software ecosystem of their devices so tightly. Doing so simply gives users a more friction-less experience, free of carrier delays and unnecessary apps that users don’t want or really don’t need.

As Apple looks into the first full week of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c availability, the company is sure to continue pushing its message that both devices, aren’t just innovation for innovation’s sake, but well-thought out, well executed enhancements that are designed to make the lives of users easier. During last night’s Emmy Awards ceremony, the company was careful to show off the colorful, fun nature of the iPhone 5c’s colored plastic shells.

By most accounts, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c stock seems to have recovered at some Apple Stores and wireless carriers and in store pickup is now available.
