Microsoft Launches New and Updated Accessories for Surface Devices

Microsoft isn’t just revealing two new Surface tablets to take on the iPad and devices made by its own partners, it’s also enhancing the everyday experience of Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 users with a lineup of new accessories designed to make the device an everyday companion.

These accessories include a Surface docking station designed specifically for the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2, plus new Power Cover, Touch Cover and Type Cover 2 add-ons.

The Surface Pro Docking Station includes everything a user might need to replicate a desktop experience without having to plug and unplug a mess of tangled cords and cables. That includes a mini DisplayPort, three USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, Ethernet port, audio in and audio out ports. Users are able to quickly plug-in to their desktop accessories by just sliding their Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2 into the dock at will. The dock even includes a power port, so that users aren’t forced to deal with power cables at all. Unfortunately, the $199.99 accessory isn’t slated for release until “early 2014.”

The Touch Cover 2 update to the original Touch Cover will ship in more colors, including purple and pink. That’s in addition to the black and red options that are available today. It’ll cost users $119.99 beginning tomorrow.

The updates to the Touch Cover are less modest. Microsoft says that the $129.99 Type Cover 2 is now even thinner and has “more rigid” keys than the original version. The updated model also includes a new proximity sensor for activating and deactivating its new backlight keyboard. The Type Cover 2 comes in three new color options as well as black; cyan, pink and purple.

Microsoft is also introducing a new Power Cover that includes a physical keyboard like the Type Cover that boosts the battery performance of the Surface Pro 2, Surface Pro and Surface 2. It’ll retail for $199.99. Users won’t be able to get their hands on it until early next year.

Finally, the company is also launching the Surface Music Kit, a software and Touch Cover combination built for music DJs. The company isn’t talking much about its long-term sales platforms for it, however.

A Surface Edition Arc Touch Mouse that features Bluetooth for $69.99, a wireless adapter for the Type and Touch Covers for $59.99 and a $49.99 car charger are also due to launch along the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2.

Microsoft is also taking the opportunity to get a few of its services in more hands. Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 users will have unlimited access to Skype land-line calling and Skype WiFi for one year. Microsoft is also throwing in two-years of 200GB storage on its SkyDrive cloud storage service too.

Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 pre-orders begin tomorrow, with the devices going on sale October 22nd.
