PlayStation 4 To Get Gestures, & More Copied Xbox One Features

It looks like Sony’s days of hinting that Microsoft’s Xbox One is less of a gaming powerhouse because of its extras are coming to an end. The company has now confirmed that PlayStation 4 users can expect voice and gesture control like their Xbox One counterparts.

The company confirmed the coming features during its press event at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. According to Extreme Tech, Sony’s console will use an upgraded version of the PlayStation EyeToy, dubbed the PlayStation 4 Eye, to allow users to manipulate on-screen objects and control the console with their voice.

This upgraded version of the PlayStation Eye includes two cameras and four directional microphones so that it can pick up any movements or sounds in a given room, also mirroring the hardware that’s included in Kinect Sensor for the Xbox 360.

So far, Sony executives have confirmed that the device will enable many of the same features as the Kinect for Xbox One, including facial recognition. However, unlike that device, the PlayStation Eye won’t be included in the box with every PlayStation 4, instead users will need to pay another $59.99 for the add-on. That’s on top of the $399.99 users will already need to pay for the console. For comparison, the Xbox One will cost users $499, but include a next-generation Kinect.

According to early reports, Sony had actually planned to include this device in the box with its next-generation console but scrapped the idea in favor of lower-introductory costs for users and bragging rights with “hard-core” gamers.

Since announcing the PlayStation 4, Sony has continued to position its console as the only next-generation device that focuses on hard-core gamers without fluff. This past weekend’s announcement would seem to fly in the face of that message.

As the device isn’t included in the box with the PlayStation 4 it’s possible that PlayStation Eye functionality will remain just as low-key as the PlayStation Move add-on Sony pushed during the PlayStation 3’s heyday. Without a consistent, sizable hardware footprint, game developers and casual gamers have almost no reason to adopt the add-on.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 will début on November 15th, with the Xbox One following it on November 22nd.

lol they have to stay up with the competition and if kinect has a potential of being the future then why stay behind… That’s bad business planing. One thing that Sony did do right this time around was respecting the developers first then gamers. Microsoft failed to do that initially. We all know their in it for the money buuut if you also have respect for your core audience along with casual and show that on a consistent basis on top of a smart business plan your chances of failure are slim to none. Sony was the duck last time with ps3.Right now Microsoft is. But my self hope both do well cause I’m a gamer at heart and their competition is good for us;-) it’s just Sony has won over with the respect for most and they have a solid system. Microsoft (right now) shakey with the respect but still solid system……. You choose

You really need a glass eye to see the bias here, but considering that the Xbox One is $499.99 you’d still be paying $40 dollars more than if you bought the PS4 with the PlaystationEye. Also Sony respects customers by not pushing the PlayStation eye to be a mandatory feature (unlike Microsoft’s initial idea)

Is the authors bias making him forget a certain amount of back pedalling and copying on his much beloved American produced system?

Gotta love the bias in this one… Last time I checked Sony came out with a camera for a system back in the PS2 days, years before the kinect came out. Also, if anyone is copying someone, it’s Microsoft… copying everyone. They literally have no actual, unique inventions. Sony invented plenty of electronics from the VCR to the Blu-Ray disc. Microsoft likes to jump into markets that are doing well late, try to muscle their way in with their money, and sway consumers with their flashy and useless technology (like the kinect). A good example is when Apple invented the personal computer, Microsoft came out with their own knockoff version of it. Nowadays, you ask kids who they think invented the PC and they’ll probably say Microsoft. Microsoft gets a lot of credit for “inventing” things that have already been invented.

IBM invented the PC, not Apple.

Sony did not invent the vcr. It was invented way before Sony brought it for home use. And it was JVC who was the first to bring a vcr. Sony brought the failed betamax before.

Real time mocap is definitely an industry first, brought about by xbox, tracking of individual limbs in real time with the creation of real time 3D mesh is an industry first…voice control viz audio input is also an industry first from Xbox…z depth real time mask effects another industry first from Microsoft…

Don’t kid yourself son, the ps eye is not a kinect 2…hopefully kinect 2 is what project natal was meant to be…

Sony came out with the idea first. Eyetoy was the first motion capture camera for home video game.

Micro$hoft stole the idea, but adding some new stuff inside.

I am amazed at the huge anount of fagboys defending m$

There are so many things wrong with this article, I don’t even know where to start.

First off, Sony positioned the PS4 as a games console first and foremost. While confirming that they would talk about multimedia features later, which Microsoft did the opposite of.

Second, how could you forget about Microsoft ripping off the EyeToy, then accuse Sony of copying Microsoft? Not just the EyeToy, but all of the PS4’s social features.

Finally, Sony didn’t remove the camera to earn the goodwill with hardcore gamers, they did it so they could knock $100 off the PS4’s retail price – which was smart. And don’t act like bundling the Kinect with the Xbone will do anything, because it won’t. The Kinect sold better than the Move and the Move got far better support.

LOL. Who brought Netflix to consoles? Who made the online gaming community a hot commodity? Who brought communication online to gaming in a big way? I don’t remember the eye toy doing full body capturing. Who had twitch first who introduced cable apps to the console? Who copied who this generation and the next? Next they’ll try to incorporate family sharing. Just wait and see and when they do you’ll probably say Sony came up with that first too. Right?

The big difference is that the eye will probably get zero support while kinect will get tons of support. It already is showing how awesome the next kinect is with the all the demos. In dead rising 3, if your trying to sneak by some zombies, and your phone rings for real…the zombies will hear and get you. That’s bad ass.

I don’t often read articles like this, I’m looking at buying a next gen console and using these articles to help me decided. Why is it that on every report I read the comments lead too childish bickering with one trying to outsmart the other?

From what I have read and seen over the last few months, just like PS3 and 360 both consoles are very impressive and pretty much the same! Some nice unique features on each one but very similar.

I usually buy every console that comes out but considering how Xbox tried to implement really bad policies on the gamers I’m going to stay away.I think it really shows who they put first and we the consumer should show them we aren’t going to be lured by flashy nonsense. Xbox should be made an example of.
