HTC One X Android 4.3 & Sense 5.5 Update Future in Doubt

Published

on

While HTC hasn’t explicitly said anything about the future of HTC One X Android and Sense updates, the future is looking extremely bleak, as a noted insider claims that the HTC One X likely won’t be getting Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or the upcoming Sense 5.5 update and will instead remain on Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5.

HTC is no longer in the business of talking about software updates well ahead of time. Instead, it chooses to communicate with its users when it’s extremely close to an update. This is great for those that own new devices but for those that are stuck with an older smartphone from HTC, it often means long waits for information in regard to big time updates.

Right now, HTC is talking all about the HTC One Android 4.3 update and the Droid DNA Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5 update but it isn’t talking about the upgrade paths for older devices, devices like the HTC One X. And as we’ve pointed out, the future of old HTC devices is not looking pretty.

Insider LlabTooFeR has been leaking HTC update information for several weeks now and all of that information has helped to paint a grim picture for not only HTC One X owners but for other owners of HTC devices. Android 4.4 KitKat looks like it won’t hit several of HTC’s current devices and in the case of the HTC One X, it’s looking like it will stay on Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5.

Several weeks ago, the HTC One X Android 4.2 and Sense 5 update began rolling out and in the weeks ahead, it will come to even more devices including the AT&T HTC One X. However, it looks like the HTC One X’s upgrade path might stop right there.

LLabTooFeR claims, once again, that the HTC One X won’t get Sense 5.5 and that he doesn’t expect it to get Android 4.3 Jelly Bean either. The door remains open for updates but it appears to be closing fast and at this point, HTC One X owners need to start tempering their expectations as news continues to fall on the bad end of the spectrum.

Android 4.3 was first released back in July alongside the Nexus 7 and it will soon be replaced by Android 4.4 KitKat. Sense 5.5 still isn’t official though rumors suggest it will arrive with the HTC One max, a large screen HTC One that is expected to debut in mid-October.

I have been loyal to htc over the years, but now my patience is running slim, I have only had the htc one x just over a year and it looks like the end of the line for any further software updates, they did the same with the Desire and I’m afraid its not good enough, I will wait a little longer but if nothing changes then i’m afraid it looks like Samsung will get my vote.!…

I too am a One X user. Right now I’m using cyanogenmod and looking forward to them releasing version 10.2 with android 4.3, since it will probably never come from HTC.
Sadly I have bad news for you and most android users.

“Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices”.

That is the official google response to why the galaxy nexus isn’t getting android 4.4. And from my experience, those “others” are most of the android manufacturers (I’ve previously owned Sony and LG). Somehow I doubt Samsung is an exception to that.

So, the way I see things, there are several options:
      1. Use phones for 18 months only or until the software becomes buggy. Whichever comes first.
      2. Stick to android but use custom versions once the last official manufacturer update becomes buggy.
      3. Switch to iPhone. (Which I’d rather not do, since I’m really fond of the openness of Android).
Still, the iPhone 4 from 3 years ago got iOS 7. A downgraded version, but still, it got it. Extra points for them.

I’m a one x plus owner in India and thankfully got the 4.2.2 update yesterday. Don’t know whether or how badly I will need 4.3 or higher

Phone companies need to quit acting like phones are throwaway devices, or at least price them like they are.

I don’t particularly hate HTC for not bringing the HOX to Jelly Bean, even though I dont particularly don’t appreciate it. They are taking way too long to release the older updates as it is, but the phone technology has been upgrading far too fast for an older phone to survive in the new ecosystem of a device, so I would say that it’s not HTC’s fault, but Google’s fault. For sure Jelly Bean and KitKat only work well on devices with 2Gb ram and/or better CPUs/GPUs. It has always been like this with the Android OS, so it wouldnt change now. Its a shame that the carriers and phone companies have been exploiting us, but then again, if we are buying, we are the ones to blame. Stop upgrading every 2 years and you will see the market slow down.

Writing this response on a Samsung Galaxy S2 running Android 4.3 on 1 GB of RAM and a dual core 1.2 Ghz processor. Just a hunch, but you may be talking out of your arse.

I don’t believe that HTC will leave the former flag ship phone last year. And they will concentrate on the latest phones that they have e.g htc one siblings, butterfly S etc…

Come on HTC, One more update to android 4.3 and Sense 5.5 and we will be happy.
It’s completely unfair for your competitor samsung galaxy 3 will have an update…

I got my phone last year (HTC ONE X) and got updated to android 4.2 and Sense 5,. looks good and my phone got a fresh look.

I guess the option left for HTC users will be to root there phone later on and get the android version they want and be happy.
