iPhone 5s Users Reporting Crashed Apps and BSoD Reboots

The iPhone 5s is the latest breakout product of 2013, and it’s still sold out pretty much anywhere you go, but it’s being reported that many users are having unexpected issues with it. Specifically, iPhone 5s owners are sometimes getting a Blue Screen of Death experience and a random reboot that follows. Of course, this is something that you can find on older Windows machines, but it appears that a number of iPhone 5S units are experiencing a similar fate.

Furthermore, apps are crashing twice as frequently on the iPhone 5s than they are on the iPhone 5c or iPhone 5. According to Crittercism (via AllThingsD), tracking hundreds of millions of app openings on the new iPhones, it’s finding that apps crash at a rate of about 2%, while the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5 are at around 1%. Of course, “twice as much” is a bit of an overreaction, as 2% is still extremely low, but it does prove that the iPhone 5s has some problems on the software end.

As far as the Blue Screen of Death reboots on the iPhone 5s, it appears that the problem has something to do with Apple’s own iWork apps. A video demonstrating the Blue Screen of Death reboot shows that the issue deals with multitasking between apps, which then seems to trigger the BSoD.

Users can temporarily fix the issue by disabling iCloud syncing for the Pages, Keynote, and Numbers apps, but seeing as how these apps work best in iCloud, we’re not sure if this really is a viable fix for many users.

As for the more-frequent app crashes, Crittercism says that the reason behind that could be because the iPhone 5s hardware is brand new and app developers weren’t able to test their iOS 7 apps on the new hardware. Plus, since the iPhone 5c uses the same hardware as the iPhone 5, it’s not seeing any of the problems that the iPhone 5s is seeing, even though it’s a “new” device.

Of course, that makes sense. iOS 7’s beta was out and about all summer, giving app developers the chance to update their apps, but they were left using older hardware and couldn’t test it out on the iPhone 5s’s new A7 chip and such. However, if that’s the case, app crashes shouldn’t occur quite as much once developers start updating their apps again. And we’re guessing if Apple fixes its iWorks apps, the random reboots might go away as well.

Majorly, iWorks applications or the applications that collects data from iCloud crashes a lot on iPhone 5s. I have experienced the issue with Pages, Numbers, and Keynote application on my latest iPhone 5s.
