The Nexus 5 release is incredibly close as Google lets details slip on Google Play and the Android 4.4 update partner teases an update release or announcement for later this month.

The Nexus 5 is everything the Nexus 4 wasn’t. Users get a bigger 1080P HD display, a top of the line processor, more durable design, improved camera and LTE connectivity.

The new Nexus smartphone is poised to arrive one year after the Nexus 4, which launched in October 2012 to shortages which kept the device out of many consumers hands until early 2013. Google no longer offers the Nexus 4 on Google Play, and when the Nexus 5 briefly appeared the older Nexus 4 vanished.

Google may plan a Nexus 5 event for later this month, or it is possible that the Nexus 5 will arrive with little showmanship with several videos, a product page and the ability to place a Nexus 5 pre-order on the Google Play Store. With an Apple event scheduled for October 22nd, Google may be picking a date that will let it swoop in after to steal some attention.

Nexus 5 Display Rumors

The Nexus 5 display is all but confirmed thanks to FCC leaks and a leaked service manual. While the Nexus 4 came with a 720p 4.7-inch display, Google and LG are upping the ante this year with a 1080P HD display according to multiple sources.

This should deliver a better reading and viewing experience with a pixel per inch rating of 443 ppi. The Moto X uses a 720P display which is not a major drawback, but as screen sizes hit 5-inches the higher resolution is appreciated.

Nexus 5 Design Rumors

The Nexus 4 came with a glass back that was prone to cracking due to temperature differences and drops, but with the Nexus 5 it looks like Google and LG are delivering a more resilient design that matches up with the Nexus 7.

Google switched the Nexus 7 to a soft touch matte black back this year and it looks like the Nexus 5 will use the same design, despite coming from a different manufacturer than the Nexus 7.

 

The Nexus 5 uses thin bezels on the edge of the large screen which should help keep the device slim and narrow enough to hold and use one-handed. We don’t know the exact dimensions, but competitors are using similar tricks to put larger screens in devices without increasing the overall size.

Nexus 5 Camera Rumors

Reports indicate the Nexus 5 will come with a 8MP sensor on the back of the device complete with Optical Image Stabilization. This OIS camera will likely be a large part of the Nexus 5 marketing as Google hopes to take on HTC, Apple and Samsung with a respectable smartphone camera.

The video above shows the a similar camera in action, which helps prevent shakiness in videos shot while moving. This new sensor should also deliver better looking low light photos.

Nexus 5 Features and Battery Life

The Nexus 5 comes with LTE, which the Nexus 4 did not officially support. While this was acceptable for some users in 2012, carriers built out 4G LTE networks significantly in 2013, so this is a very good option to see in place. We also expect a 16GB Nexus 5 for $349 and a 32GB Nexus 5 for $399.

It looks like the Nexus 5 will use a Snapdragon 800 processor which includes faster charging, snappy performance and the ability to keep the microphone active to listen for a key word. It is likely that the Nexus 5 will let users say, “OK Google Now,” to search Google with your voice and to control the phone, including playing music and more.

Rumors suggest the Nexus 5 will come with a larger 2,300mAh battery, which should help keep battery life reasonable with the addition of a larger, higher-resolution display and LTE.

Nexus 5 Software

The Nexus 5 should launch with Android 4.4 KitKat on board. Android 4.4 KitKat is the newest version of Google’s Android operating system and it comes to life in place of the anticipated Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie release.

At this point, multiple leaks show off some of the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat, but there is not a full list of changes to the device. Google appears to be aiming for a smaller update that can roll out to more users faster. Some manufacturers are already planning Android 4.4 updates according to leaks.
