Amazon Bumps Up Free Super Saver Shipping Minimum to $35

Published

Have you enjoyed getting away with free shipping when ordering all of your cheap iPhone or Android accessories? Well, Amazon announced that it has bumped up its minimum for getting its Free Super Saver Shipping option when shopping on the company’s website. The minimum is now $35, when previously it was $25. This means that, for now on, whenever you shop at Amazon, you have to order at least $35 worth of qualified products in order to get free shipping.

Amazon says this is the first time in over a decade that the company has increased its minimum when qualifying for free shipping, and during that time, more and more products have been added to Amazon’s catalog that qualify shoppers to get this free shipping option.

amazon-logoOf course, though, that doesn’t make Amazon shoppers feel any better. We’re not sure of the reason behind the increase, but it could be an effort for Amazon to get more users to sign up for the company’s Prime service, which costs $80 per year and gets you free two-day shipping (no minimum), free access to Amazon’s Instant Video movie streaming service, and the Kindle Lending Library, where you can essentially rent Kindle books for free. Prime Instant Video sometimes lacks in content, but usually you can find good shows and movies that aren’t on other streaming services.

If the minimum increase is, in fact, an effort to get more people to sign up for Prime, we have no reason that the tactic won’t work. Prime is already a good deal with just the free two-day shipping benefit, especially if you use Amazon a lot, but the added features of Instant Video and the Kindle Lending Library are icing on the cake.

If you’re particular upset about the minimum increase to $35, we suggest taking a look at a Prime membership; You can even sign up for a 30-day trial for free. Otherwise, you’ll have to build up your next Amazon order and add on an extra $10 in items so that you’ll get your free shipping.

Still, though, Amazon is one of the few online stores that offers such a low threshold for free shipping. Most online places that you shop at will usually have at least a $50 minimum in order to qualify for free shipping, and that’s usually what they call a “limited-time promotion.” While the boost to $35 isn’t awesome, at least it’s still better than most other retailers.

I do see quite a few of my friends purchasing Amazon Prime but I’m still sticking to coolfilleritem.com to reach that sale threshold. I am interested in seeing how this will affect Amazon’s margins.
