Sony to Debut Two New Xperia Phones in November, One With 8 Cores

After unveiling its flagship Xperia Z1 under two months ago, Sony is rumored to continue its phone launch on November 12 at an event in China where the electronics giant will debut two new Xperia models. Of the new devices, the Tianchi is the more interesting of the two, featuring an 8-core processor.

Despite its powerful specs, the Tianchi is said to sport a more budget-friendly price, utilizing more economical parts like an ARM-powered 8-core processor from MediaTek. Unlike Samsung’s current Exynos 5 Octa, the MediaTek chip inside the Tianchi will fire on all 8 cores at the same time whereas Samsung’s current octa-core processors on current handsets will either use 4 high-powered or 4 low-powered cores at any given time depending on how CPU intensive the task at hand is.

The device will also have a large 6-inch display, but at a 720p HD resolution rather than the 1080p full HD resolution of flagship phones on the market today. As such, the Tianchi may be positioned more as a Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 competitor, rather than a true rival to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 phablet.

Sony launched its flagship Xperia Z1 smartphone just under two months ago and it is rumored that the Japanese firm will be debuting two more phones in the Xperia family next month in China.

At the high end of the phablet market, Sony already has the Xperia Z Ultra on the market; that device has a 6.4-inch display.

The second phone, according to a report on TechRadar, is said to be named the Xperia Z1S and may be a spinoff of Sony’s Xperia Z1 Mini, featuring a 4.3-inch 720p HD display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The Xperia Z1S is said to be a China-exclusive handset.

At this time, it’s unclear if the Tianchi will be making its way to other markets, or if it will only be available in China.
