Trick or Treat: Nexus 5 Tipped for Halloween Launch with KitKat

Google’s forthcoming flagship Nexus 5 smartphone is now believed to be launching on the Google Play Store on the Halloween holiday in the U.S. on October 31. According to Mobile Syrup, a Canadian launch will happen about a week later on November 8 through various Canadian carriers.

The publication did not disclose its sources and so the dates should be taken with a grain of salt. Originally, it was believed that the flagship Nexus phone would be launching in mid-October following a series of leaks, but that did not happen.

Similarly, CNET is also speculating that a Halloween-timed launch could tie in nicely with the chocolate KitKat treat, noting, “It could be that a launch closer to Halloween was always the plan.”

nexus5pressLike the Nexus 4, it is believed that the Nexus 5 would be made by Android partner LG. The device is anticipated to come with an updated processor, a 1080p full HD display, improved camera, and 4G LTE support. These features would make the Nexus 5 a competitive device and a noteworthy upgrade for owners of the Nexus 4 who are itching to have a newer and better phone. The Nexus 5 is rumored to be based loosely on features and specs of the LG G2 as the Nexus 4 was based on LG’s Optimus G flagship smartphone.

Along with the Nexus 5, Google is also anticipated to unveil the new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. Not much is known about the new features of KitKat, but the latest speculation is that the new mobile OS won’t bring many significant or new changes to the smartphone. Rather, it is now believed that most of KitKat’s upgrades will be geared at the TV platform as the company may be rebranding its Google TV platform into Android TV.

If the launch happens on October 31, Google’s headquarters may be the perfect venue to go trick or treating.

Halloween does make sense for the KitKat branding. Does that mean there will also be a “fun size” Nexus 5?
