Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Available Early

Published

on

The Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat update should be coming sometime within the next two weeks but for those that don’t want to wait, there is a way to get the Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat update on board right now, well ahead of Google’s Over-the-Air roll out.

Yesterday, Google finally announced both the Nexus 5 and the Android 4.4 KitKat update, immediately putting both on sale through the Google Play Store. It also confirmed the Android 4.4 KitKat update for four of its big name Android devices including the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and the Nexus 7. It declined to offer an Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Galaxy Nexus.

Google did not outline a specific roll out date for these three devices but thanks to HTC, we know that they should get the new software within two weeks. Yesterday, HTC confirmed that it would be rolling out the HTC One Google Edition Android 4.4 KitKat update within 15 days. The Google Editions typically see their updates after Google’s Nexus-branded devices so we should see the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates roll out fairly soon.

Earlier today, we informed Nexus 4 owners about an early way to upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat. While the process isn’t easy, or perfect, installing an Android 4.4 KitKat ROM, at this point, is the only way to get the update early. And thanks to intrepid developers, the experience should mirror the experience that the actual Android 4.4 update brings.

Owners of the Nexus 7, specifically, the Nexus 7 (2013) Wi-Fi only model, also can install Android 4.4 KitKat early thanks to a ROM from Rootzwiki. Owners of the Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi only can install the Android 4.4 KitKat thanks to Android Authrority and Paranoid Android. We only recommend this method for those that know what they are doing as the installation process could have negative effects. Those who aren’t accustomed to installing software ahead of time should hold out and wait for the OTA.

Android 4.4 KitKat is Google’s latest and greatest piece of software and while it doesn’t bring massive changes to the Android operating system, the incremental changes on board should delight Nexus owners.

Why do this. Yea, I root my phones and tablets, but not my nexus and Google play Ed. Devices. I see no point in it. I’m going to get the update soon, unlike other phones where you can expect a month to a year or even never to get an update. Though if you have already rooted, go ahead. Just my opinion anyway. 😊

Rooting is overrated and not worth it.

Depends on how you use your device. There are simply some things you cannot do without root access. As a developer it’s extremely useful.

The KitKat AOSP for nexus 7 (2012) is working on my machine, but just bearly. Screen tilt is not on, LMT launcher is not ported yet, Next 3d won’t work, most apk downloads are still problematic.

It’s a fun download and I’ll play around with it. But, this really is illustrates how good the Cyanogenmod ROM is that many of us use as the framework for our mods.
