Moto X Android 4.4 KitKat Update Coming in the Next Few Weeks

Today Google and Motorola announced the all-new $179 contract free Moto G smartphone, but that isn’t all the exciting news we gathered from its Google+ event this morning. While talking about software updates for the Moto G, which are expected to come in early 2014, we received some excellent news on the popular Moto X.

This morning Motorola confirmed what we’ve all been hoping for, and that is that with Google on board updates are finally about to start arriving much quicker. The Moto X will receive Android 4.4 KitKat “within weeks” according to Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside. He didn’t say coming soon, by the end of 2013, or any of those other comments we’re all used to seeing. Instead he made it very clear that it will arrive “within a matter of weeks.”

The company’s new Moto G won’t receive the update to Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat until early 2014, according to the event today, but the Moto X is on a much tighter schedule. While Woodside didn’t mention specific dates or carriers, it’s good to know over the next few weeks and possibly before the end of November the Moto X could be getting KitKat.

This is great news following last weeks leak of Android 4.4 KitKat for the T-Mobile Moto X, which leads us to believe the update is already in the testing phase on multiple carriers in the US.

On the other side of the Motorola coin is the DROID Ultra and MAXX for Verizon, which are still waiting for Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Hopefully the same quick updates to KitKat will arrive for those devices, although we can expect them to come a little later than other carriers, as Verizon isn’t usually the first to updates.

If you’ve been waiting to get the Moto X now is a great time. The customization features are available from all US carriers, Android 4.4 KitKat is coming soon, and it was recently dropped to just $99 with a new 2-year contract.
