Samsung Galaxy Note 2: What to Expect After Android 4.3

Published

on

All eyes are currently on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, an update that continues to roll out in the United States and around the world, bringing Samsung KNOX and Galaxy Gear support along with it. However, we have our eye to the future and here, we want to take a look at what Galaxy Note 2 users should expect after the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update rolls out.

Back in July, Google announced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, an update that brought some incremental upgrades and enhancements to Nexus owners. At the time, many flagship devices hadn’t even been updated to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, leaving many to wonder how the future would play out.

For Samsung Galaxy Note 2 users, it meant a long wait for a major update as Samsung decided to skip Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in favor of the Bluetooth Low Energy enhanced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Bluetooth LE is important for Samsung’s Galaxy Gear accessory, a watch-like accessory that syncs with the Galaxy Note 2 and other Galaxy devices via Bluetooth.

December could bring the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 update release in some regions, with Galaxy Note 3 features.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean didn’t start rolling out to the Galaxy Note 2 immediately, however. Users had to wait a few weeks for Samsung and its various carriers to get their act together. A few days ago, we saw the software roll out to the international version of the device and just a short time ago, the Sprint Galaxy Note 2 became the first to get Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The other Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 updates are close and we expect them to be delivered before the end of the year.

After a few weeks, the nostalgia will wear off and Galaxy Note 2 owners will once again be looking toward the future, wondering what might be in the store for them. Signs currently point to Android 4.4 KitKat being the next update for the Galaxy Note 2, an update that has already emerged for several devices including the Moto X.

With that in mind, it’s time to take a look at what we think comes next for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, after the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update.

Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Problems to Linger

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is rolling out slowly, particularly in the United States where the roll out has very limited. While we haven’t heard about any catastrophic issues with the Sprint Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, we have been hearing about issues with other Galaxy Note 2 variants including complaints about battery life and slow charging.

No software update is perfect so we fully expect the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 updates in the U.S. and elsewhere to come with some issues. Problem is, this is an Android device that means that bug fix updates won’t come fast or easy. Samsung will need to work with carriers to develop and test any bug fix update to Android 4.3 which will take some time.

So, those who are experiencing issues with Android 4.3 on the Galaxy Note 2, will likely have to wait a few weeks, if not a few months, for an Android 4.3 bug fix update to arrive.

One More Android 4.3 Update

Users should expect the Galaxy Note 2 to get an update before its next major upgrade. Samsung and carriers will often roll out bug fix updates in the weeks before a major upgrade to prepare the device for the next major piece of software and that’s what we expect here. We expect to see Galaxy Note 2 models get an incremental update in the next couple of months, aimed at tackling any lingering issues inside of Android 4.3.

We can’t speak to what those issues will be, all devices and users are different, but Samsung and its carriers should do their best to push out updates ahead of the Android 4.4 KitKat update that is rumored to be arriving sometime before the end of April.

Android 4.4 KitKat, At Least

Android 4.4 KitKat isn’t confirmed for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 but it’s likely. The device is only a year old and Android 4.3 marked its first major Android upgrade. So, we doubt that Samsung is going to stop there. Instead, we should see Android 4.4 KitKat roll out, barring any delays or issues, sometime in 2014, perhaps in the first half of the year. And here’s where it gets confusing.

android_kitkat

We think the Galaxy S3 stops on Android 4.4 KitKat. It’s old and turning two years old come May. Google doesn’t recommend updates past 18 months of service so we highly doubt that it gets anything past Android 4.4. The Galaxy Note 2 is younger than the Galaxy S3 and it arrived with Android 4.2 stock. The Galaxy S3 arrived with Android 4.0. The Galaxy Note 2 also has more horsepower, a quad-core processor, something that the Galaxy S3 doesn’t have.

Yes, the device will be turning two, but not until September of this year. Galaxy Note 2 users can expect Android 4.4 KitKat, that’s a sure thing, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Galaxy Note 2 got one more update. Expect one major update, hope for two.

Same Update Process

Whatever lies ahead should come with the same update process that we’ve seen from Samsung time and time again. For those that aren’t clear on what that entails, here is a rundown of what to expect in the build up to the next major release which is almost certainly going to be the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update:

  1. Early rumors about a release window. This has already happened and the update is rumored to be coming by the end of April.
  2. In the weeks after, a substantial release date leak that all but confirms Samsung’s plans and further nails down a window.
  3. A Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat leak, a sign that the update is getting closer.
  4. All the while, there will be zero communication from Samsung or the carriers that host the Galaxy Note 2.
  5. As we push deeper into 2014, Samsung will finally confirm the update when its weeks away.
  6. Another update leak, this one should be close to the final version.
  7. International Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update will roll out.
  8. U.S. Galaxy Note 2 variants will follow.

That’s what we expect and we would be surprised if the roll out process played out any differently. Samsung is a creature of habit and we expect a similar upgrade process for Android 4.4 KitKat and beyond.

Issues, Again

Again, even the most stable Android updates likely won’t be safe from bugs. For the most part, the Android 4.4 KitKat update has been playing nice with Nexus devices. In the past, we’ve seen the initial experience get plagued by bugs so this is a good sign. Nexus devices aren’t Samsung devices though and they don’t have complicated TouchWiz software on board.

Google’s software apparently didn’t play nice with Android 4.2 and it’s clear that it’s not playing nice with Android 4.3. So, we suspect that Galaxy Note 2 users will run into some issues once the Android 4.4 KitKat update arrives. Same goes for any updates after it. So, users will simply want to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

A Fresh Device

In 2014, we should see Samsung make some major upgrades to the Galaxy Note 2’s software. That means features from Android 4.4 KitKat, as well as enhancements to the device’s TouchWiz software. Samsung’s major updates typically come with enhancements and fixes on board and we expect to see the same from any updates arriving in 2014. With a Samsung Galaxy S5 due out next year, we could see Samsung deliver some its features to Galaxy Note 2 users.

Point is, expect the software experience on the Galaxy Note 2 to improve in 2014, and hopefully make the device feel like a new phone. The company has been successful with this in the past and it’s a reason why people continue to buy these phones. Samsung is simply able to deliver a solid experience throughout the duration of a contract. Look for the additions to TouchWiz to do something similar next year.

Haven’t got a note 2 but after recent articles by this author/journal thought I’d have a quick gander.

Just can’t quite believe how trite this, and all the other pieces, have been!

It should be possible to revert back to the previous version of Android, if the current upgrade causes problems. That would keep customers happy. Why is it not an option?

My galaxy s4 received the update yesterday. Now I keep getting these weird security messages about apps trying to access the system and being blocked. When I click to see what app it’s talking about it just takes me to the app list in settings. My wife tried calling me and I couldn’t pick up the call.

Samsung software is trash. I looked at cyanogenmod, but it sounds like there are plenty of bugs there too.

“After a few weeks, the nostalgia will wear off ”

I believe the word you are looking for is novelty not nostalgia?

:) I may be wrong though

Yep. I hate articles like these. The update isnt even out yet to know what to expect. Can’t go off international version because the s/w is different. I’ve given up on samsung after my note 2 is obsolete.

I have just read the drivel on drip app. Why don’t you people who purport to know what you are talking about abandon the trek of conjuring up rumours and get some facts together.
UK is still not updated with 4.3 and based on experience, it is not likely to be until well into next year, yet you at rumour control are preaching 4.4… Come on guys get real.

Just downloading the 4.3 update on my Bell Note 2. It’s 705.39 MB and you can work on your phone while the big update downloads. I’m so excited cause this is the first update since I bought the phone. Never knew it would be this easy – I thought I’d have to go through some complicated steps on my computer.

My Note 2 with Android 4.3 has the same issues with hotspot that my LG Intuition did after upgrading to Android 4.3. I can no longer stream movies to my smart TV using hotspot. Error is “…gateway is not responding…” Does anyone know of a fix for this? We only watch netflix using my unlimited data plan/hotspot on my phone.

Samsung galaxy note 2 uk unlocked running 4.3 with no issues, no lag, faster at any task games etc and ram has went down from 900mb on 4.1 to 680mb on 4.3 much better. I have not reset just downloaded and installed all that was it.

My note 2 prompted me to update at 7am yesterday morning. Groggy-eyed I clicked ok without reading it. Next thing I know it’s doing a 15minute install of 4.3 with no way to revert. That’s crap! It should clearly warn you before continuing. Anyways, only problem I’ve noticed so far is my phone no longer automatically locks the screen after 30 mins and also never turns off the screen (set to 2 mins). I use my phone for IT work and count on it to lock so noone can access my vpn connection and AD / RDP apps. Now I have to manually lock it with the power button. Very disappointed in how easy it is to accidentally update your OS on this phone. Also don’t care for the aesthetic changes.

I’m in Australia, i got the upgrade for my note2 about a month ago(januaryish)
a nice feature that came with the update was air command.
It also came with some other apps, Knox was one……. can’t recall the other, neither I think I will use.
While I have not tested all of the notes vast capability s, i have noticed the split screen feature no longer works………. Also I have found my blue tooth ear piece that as well as using for phone calls I did use it for listening to music , unfortunately the listening to music no longer works, however the head phone jack still works.

i guess its not that much of a big deal , but i could listen to the music stealthily while going about my daily business. ……. I note this has also had the same effect while using my bluetooth doover on the note2 while using in the car as a gps……… again ….bluetooth works for the phone ……..but not the gps.
In hindsight if i had a crystal ball, i would have been very happy to not upgrade to 4.3………… hopefully samsung will do better with 4.4 .
