iOS 7 Jailbreak Fixes Coming, Creators Address Piracy and Privacy

Published

on

The iOS 7 jailbreak release is buggy to say the least and full of drama but the creators are working on iOS 7 jailbreak fixes to address many of the issues and we should see it early next year.

In a second letter to the community the Evad3rs attempt to address the privacy of user data and the piracy which was evident in the App Store that the original jailbreak installed instead of Cydia for Chinese users.

In the days since the iOS 7 jailbreak release, Evad3rs, jailbreak developers and the creator of Cydia publicly sparred over the details of this jailbreak, the partnership with a Chinese firm that promotes app piracy and details of negotiations that led to the events unfolding before a public iOS 7.1 release.

iOS 7 jailbreak fixes are on the way, but users have a short wait ahead.

In addition to the drama, there are a limited number of iOS 7 jailbreak apps and tweaks available, a number that drops dramatically for the iPhone 5s, iPad mini Retina and iPad Air thanks to the new 64-bit processors used in these devices. This list of iOS 7 jailbreak app compatibility helps, but it will likely be a few weeks before widespread iOS 7 Cydia apps and tweaks arrive as developers are also waiting for an updated version of Mobile Substrate.

iOS 7 Jailbreak Problems & Fixes

The rushed iOS 7 jailbreak is not perfect, while working on our iOS 7 jailbreak guide we ran into the Apple logo boot loop problem multiple times and users are complaining of major iOS 7 jailbreak problems from JailbreakQA including,

  • Most iOS 7 Jailbreak Tweaks and Themes don’t work
  • Jailbreak causes Apple logo boot loop
  • iPhones and iPads that performed an OTA update won’t jailbreak
  • evasi0n7 won’t open on OS X 10.6.8 or OS X 10.9.x for some users
  • The iOS 7 Jailbreak does not work on the iPad 2 WiFi
  • iOS 7 Jailbreak gets stuck on To continue, please unlock your device step
  • Device filesystem is not accessible from iFunbox or USB browsers.
The iOS 7 jailbreak is not perfected.

The JailbreakQA listing includes possible iOS 7 jailbreak fixes for some of these problems, but some users will need to wait for the Evad3rs to release a new version of the iOS 7 jailbreak. The team already released evasi0n7 1.0.1, but the major difference there is that the team removed the Chinese app store. The Evad3rs issued a new statement,

“We are working hard to fix the problems with the jailbreak. Unfortunately, it’s the holidays and we would like to spend time with our friends and family. The events of the last couple of days have been extremely stressful for us and we need some time to recover. We will work as hard as we can to resolve any remaining issues. Thank you for your understanding.”

While there is no specific timeline, we anticipate an evasi0n7 1.1 release will come in 2014, after the holidays wrap up next week.

iOS 7 Jailbreak Privacy and Piracy

The privacy of users is a big concern with the jailbreak, especially after an unofficial iMessage Android app passed along user information to China earlier this year.

When the iOS 7 jailbreak arrived many users pointed fingers and shared information that purported to show the jailbreak was passing along information about the user. According to the Evad3rs reverse engineering of the Taig store user information is safe. The team shares,

“Taig transmitted data similar to what Cydia transmits. Unique device identifiers were transmitted in encrypted form similar to how Cydia uses SSL to protect the privacy of its users. Taig did not transmit any private user data from the devices at all.”

Another major issue is App piracy which explodes after a new jailbreak. While there is no need to jailbreak to pirate apps on the iPhone and iPad, there are still a number of users that view an iOS 7 jailbreak as a path to free apps. By and large the jailbreak community is against pirating apps, and is simply looking for access to apps that can’t be found in Apple’s app store.

The Evad3rs partnership with Taig didn’t help this image as pirated apps were found quickly in the app store despite an agreement to keep them out.

“Our written and verbal agreement with Taig banned it. They assured us it was not in there. We did not check every package in their store but a cursory examination before release found no problems. However, after investigation and after notification from the community, we found examples, including pirated tweaks, Apple App Store apps, and even pod2g’s PodDJ app. We dropped the ball on this.”

The Taig App store is no longer included in the IOS 7 jailbreak, but developers voiced complaints including Paul Haddad who is part of the team that makes Tweetbot, a popular iPhone Twitter app. Haddad shares a spike in piracy and along with it support requests after the iOs 7 jailbreak release.

App piracy is frustrating for the average user as it can impact support times for legitimate buyers, takes money out of developer pockets and in the case of Tweetbot take up limited Twitter tokens that sometime down the line may prevent legitimate users form buying the app.
