7 Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Predictions

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is on the way, there is little doubt about that, but there are still plenty of mysteries surrounding the Galaxy S4’s next big Android update. Here, we make some bold predictions about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update, its release date, and more.

Back in November, Google started rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat, a new major Android update that replaced Android Jelly Bean as the most current version of mobile software for Google smartphones and tablets. Google’s various Android manufacturers quickly confirmed a number of Android 4.4 KitKat updates including upgrades for the Moto X, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, and more. Missing in action was Samsung, the largest Android manufacturer in the world.

In years past, Samsung has been coy about releasing specific software update information, likely to avoid setting consumer expectations. Often times, companies have released specific software release dates only to encounter major issues in the testing process, issues that postponed the announced release dates.

So there is something to admire about Samsung’s silence but also something to feel frustrated about especially now that the Android 4.4 KitKat update is several months old.

Samsung still isn’t talking about Android 4.4 KitKat but rumors, and releases, are doing the talking for it. Last week, we saw the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out to users. Today, we saw the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 update hit even more users, a sign that the big push is coming.

Other Galaxy Android 4.4 KitKat updates remain missing though, including the update for the Galaxy S4, Samsung’s current flagship and one that we initially believed would get Android 4.4 KitKat first.

Armed with rumors, leaks and more, we want to take a stab and make some Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat predictions ahead of the official release date from Samsung.

Android 4.4 KitKat Update Release By April

Rumors say that the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update will be out in February or March, no specific date revealed. Another rumor claims that Samsung will roll out the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates in March, shortly after the arrival of the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update. We’ve also seen French carrier SFR suggest a Galaxy S4 update in January or February, timing it has stuck to after briefly pulling the information.

At this point, nailing down a specific date is close to impossible because of how reliant the release date is on the testing process. From what we’ve heard the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is not ready to roll out and requires more testing. That’s not a good sign for an update in January and it makes February look pretty bleak.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Hidden Features

Samsung has also waited to update its former flagships until after the arrival of its new flagship. Android 4.3 didn’t hit the Galaxy Note 2 until after the Galaxy Note 3’s arrival. The Galaxy S3 got Android 4.2 after the Galaxy S4 touched down. This makes it even harder to predict.

At this point, we’re going to go with a cautious prediction and say that the Galaxy S4 will arrive by the end of April. There are too many signs that point to February and March. We’d be shocked if the Galaxy S5 beat the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update at this point.

Familiar Roll Out Process

We think that Samsung Galaxy S4 owners can look at the current state of the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat roll out and find themselves starring at their own upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat roll out process.

Samsung is doing exactly what we though it would do. The Galaxy Note 3 update landed for one international variant last week. The update is limited to Poland. Today, the update hit another international variant and the new update is limited to Russia. This is a standard Samsung update roll out process.

Updates roll out slowly and push out to an increasing number of variants in an increasing number of regions over time. Never, does Samsung push out hundreds of updates at once.

We think Galaxy S4 owners are going to encounter the same with their Android 4.4 KitKat update. We should see Samsung push it out to a few select regions at the start and then move on once the update is deemed safe.

Zero Communication

Look for Samsung to continue its radio silence with consumers and completely fail to announce a specific release date or change log for the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update. The Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update came out of the blue, without any official release detailing features, and we would be shocked to see Samsung do something different with its current Galaxy S.

Instead, we expect updates including the various updates on carriers in the United States, to roll out without much warning. We do, however, expect U.S. carriers to provide a full change log for their updates, alerting users to fixes, enhancements and new features that arrive on board the brand new software.

U.S. Release Dates Weeks After Initial Release

U.S. carriers may have been quick to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean but we suspect that that was because they wanted to provide support for the Galaxy Gear. Galaxy Gear is the watch accessory that carriers are selling as a companion to their Galaxy smartphone lineup. Carriers in the United States are typically much slower to Android updates.

We haven’t seen any U.S. carriers confirm Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates and the update is moving extremely slowly to users around the world. We expect the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat roll out to mirror the Galaxy Note 3’s and thus, we would be shocked to see U.S. carriers spring to life for this aging smartphone.

Instead we expect them to be focused on selling the Galaxy S5 and HTC M8. If the Android 4.4 KitKat update somehow played into that, we’d expect it much sooner. Because it doesn’t, we’d be surprised to U.S. carriers take quick action.

Update That Doesn’t Change Much from Leaks

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update has leaked out though the leaks are limited to a specific variant, the GT-i9505. The leaks are important because they allow users of that variant to upgrade now, but it also has detailed the features that should be on board the Galaxy S4 update when it arrives. Unsurprisingly, it mirrors the Galaxy Note 3’s update.

There are some UI tweaks, some changes to the keyboard, emoji support, speed improvements, and more. It’s a solid update but it’s also one that we can’t see changing much from these leaked updates. While there is still work to be done, we can’t see Samsung outfitting the update with tons of new features between now and its official release.

The Galaxy Note 3 update features many of the same things and is extremely incremental and we can’t see Samsung giving the Galaxy S4 a distinct edge here. Look for the feature set to remain pretty consistent with the test firmware.

Bug Fixes Galore

One thing that we do expect on board are bug fixes. Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been causing problems for Galaxy S4 owners, that’s clear, so we expect Samsung and its carriers to address some of these issues inside of Android 4.4 KitKat. Bug fixes will obviously vary from carrier to carrier but we think that all carriers in the United States will offer some remedies for the bugs plaguing Galaxy S4 owners in Jelly Bean.

We expect bug fixes to dominate the change log for the Galaxy S4 at most carriers as Samsung works to stabilize the experience ahead of the next big release later on this year, a release that should include the new TouchWiz UI that should debut on the Galaxy S5.

Bugs of Its Own

Finally, the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update should bring some bugs of its own. Major Android updates, small and large, always do. Android updates have a tendency to break things like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 4G LTE and they almost always bring battery life issues for users. The Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update will likely be no different.

Meanwhile in Australia, severely disappointed customers of the biggest Telco. – Telstra with the LTE Variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, are STILL waiting to update to Android 4.3 Jelly-Bean…

But the Moto X is just not as good when it comes to performance. The S4, for instance, is much faster.

I have the S4, but the Moto X performs very well, and I was very close to getting it. For me it was the lack or wireless charging that kept me from getting it. I had a qi wireless charging tag on my S3 and already had wireless chargers throughout the house (and in my car), so wireless charging was a must in my new phone. I’m very happy with my S4, but I think I would have been equally as happy if not more so with the Moto X if it had wireless charging capabilities.

  3. Good to see that finally Samsung is updating Galaxy S4 I9500 to Android 4.4
