Galaxy S5 Release Date Prep Work Begins

Published

on

Samsung still isn’t talking about the Galaxy S5 or its release date but at least one company is preparing for the eventual release of the Samsung Galaxy S5, confirmed by a placeholder on Amazon’s website.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 launch date appears to be set for February 24th at Mobile World Congress 2014. Samsung hasn’t said what it will be announcing at its Unpacked 5 Episode 1 event though a recent report from The New York Times pegs the Galaxy S5’s launch for that date. The publication also claims that Samsung will debut a Galaxy Gear 2 alongside the new smartphone.

At the event, we expect to hear about the coveted Samsung Galaxy S5 release date, the date that Samsung releases the device into the wild. And while Samsung likely won’t confirm anything until the event itself, we are starting to see companies begin to prepare for the inevitable release of the Galaxy S5.

Earlier this week, we spotted some Galaxy S5 cases on MobileFun. The cases, from accessory maker Trident, are up for pre-order, ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S5 launch. While the cases don’t reveal anything about the Galaxy S5 itself, they indicate that companies are working behind the scenes preparing for the release of one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year.

Today, Gotta Be Mobile discovered more evidence of Samsung Galaxy S5 release date prep. Buried deep within Amazon web store, we have discovered Galaxy S5 accessory listings from well-known accessory maker Spigen. Spigen hasn’t announced anything yet but it’s clear that the company is planning to release a ton of Galaxy S5 accessories once the device is released.

Spigen’s cases range in price from $11 to $30 but all of the cases currently are tagged with an “in stock date” of April 15th. While that date lines up with Samsung Galaxy S5 release date rumors that project April as the device’s release month, consumers would be wise to not read too much into the date. At least not yet.

Prior to the Nexus 5 launch, we saw Spigen tease Nexus 5 cases well ahead of time. Some of those Nexus 5 accessories were listed with a release date of October 31st, or, the same day that the Nexus 5 was announced. Whether this was a coincidence or not, we don’t know, though Spigen assured us that the date was a placeholder that was based on rumors and not inside information.

Spigen likely doesn’t have Galaxy S5 release date from Samsung but it’s entirely possible that it does possesses inside knowledge that has led it to tag these accessories with an April 15th “in stock date.” It’s also possible that Spigen is simply guessing based on rumors.

The fact that this is Spigen, and not some unknown accessory manufacturer adds some legitimacy to the listings. Last year, we saw Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 accessories arrive ahead of time though they were from companies without the same type of reputation. We even saw some companies market Galaxy S4 cases that wound up not fitting the real Galaxy S4.

What we do know is that the company, like Trident, is preparing for the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date, whenever it might be. And from the looks of things, Galaxy S5 buyers should have a number of Spigen-made accessories to choose from once the Galaxy S5 does arrive on shelves.

All signs currently point to a Samsung Galaxy S5 launch on February 24th. Release date rumors, thus far, have all pointed to April, though given the February launch, it could be that the release comes much sooner.

When the Samsung Galaxy S5 does hit shelves, it will apparently do so with a number of high-end features including a 5.2-inch display, speedy next-generation processor, 16MP camera, Android 4.4 KitKat , and some major changes to Samsung’s TouchWiz.

Rumors suggest that, at the very least, the Galaxy S5 will be coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon, the same carriers that released last year’s Samsung Galaxy S4. Samsung typically works out deals with pre-paid and regional U.S. carriers as well.
