Free Xbox Live Gold Coming This Weekend for US and Canada Gamers

Microsoft announced this morning that Xbox gamers will be able to take advantage of free Xbox Live Gold this weekend, allowing users with only a Silver membership to experience some of the benefits that a Gold subscription offers, and the company hopes to bring some gamers over the paying side once they see all the stuff they can do.

On his blog, Xbox Live head Larry Hryb mentions that “if you’ve always wanted to check out the latest entertainment experiences on Xbox 360, now is your chance.”

Hryb doesn’t mention the Xbox One specifically (only the Xbox 360), but we’re guessing gamers with either console will be able to experience the free benefits throughout the weekend.

Officially, the free Gold weekend begins at 12:01 am PT on Friday, February 14 and ends at 11:59 pm PT on Sunday, February 16. This should give you enough time to make your way through as much content as possible before the time runs out.

Hryb says that “all Xbox owners in [the US and Canada], regardless of their current Xbox LIVE subscription status, will have access to online multiplayer gaming, Video Kinect, and our entire catalog of entertainment apps.” Of course, you’ll need separate subscriptions for apps like Netflix and Hulu, but if you already do, you can watch your favorite shows and movies right on your Xbox console.

This is one of the few times we’ve seen Microsoft bring back its free Xbox Live Gold weekends ever since the launch of the Xbox One back in November. The company usually offers these free weekends every couple of months in various regions, so this could be the first of many free weekend sessions that you’ll get throughout 2014.

Xbox Live Gold gives gamers the ability to access different apps to play around with, but most importantly, it allows gamers to play with friends over multiplayer in any game that has multiplayer abilities.
