iPhone 5s Camera Problems Plague Users

Published

on

The iPhone 5s and iOS 7 have been out for almost five months now, and while the new-ness factor is still there, may users are now getting accustomed to the new layout of iOS 7 and its many new features. One of those new features is the improved and redesigned camera app.

The new interface brings a couple of nifty new bells and whistles, like filters and the ability to take a photo or record a video in square mode for various photo services like Instagram or Vine. However, we’ve heard reports of issues with the iOS 7 camera app.

iPhone 5s camera issues

Like a lot of apps in iOS 7, we’ve witnessed the camera app crashing on us plenty of times, as well as failing to open when we try to access the camera from the lock screen. Furthermore (and perhaps more mysteriously), we sometimes get just a black screen where the “viewfinder”should be. The grid will still show up, as well as the focusing sight, but instead of our subject being seen on the screen, it’s just a black screen.

It’s not just iPhone 5s users who are experiencing these same problems, though. We’ve talked to several iPhone 4s owners who say they’re having the same issues with the iOS 7 camera app. Usually closing and re-opening it will fix it temporarily, but we usually see the problem come back every couple of weeks or so, depending on how often we use the camera app.

Many people have suggested restarting your iPhone, resetting the settings and even putting your iPhone in DFU Mode, which is only recommended for experienced users, but many folks having this issue have said that these fixes aren’t working for them.

This is most likely a software issue and will hopefully get fixed with the release of iOS 7.1, which is said to be launching at some point next month, but we’re not sure on a specific date just yet. We’ve been testing out the various betas of iOS 7.1 over the past few weeks and can definitely say that issues with the camera are significantly less. Apple hasn’t mentioned putting a lot of focus on the camera in iOS 7.1, but we’re guessing the company is squeezing in a handful of bug fixes to make the experience less annoying.

There is another bug in camera pano mode where the image taken gets black screen in corners if the pic. It happens to old pano pics also.

I have a iPhone 4s running iOS 7.0.4 and just noticed this issue today (2-20-2014). I couldn’t get the camera to take any pictures, I just keep getting the black screen that crashes after 10-20 seconds, then shows the camera app icon as it fades out and returns me to the home screen. After re-starting the camera app at least 10 times (and reading this article), I shut down and re-boot ed and was finally able to take a picture.

I upgraded from an iPhone 4 to 5S and some of my apps eg Box, banking etc just crash. What a waste of money and time. Very disappointed with Apple at the moment.

There’s three rings at the bottom of the screen in the right hand corner click on those and there is like different fonts or colors!

I have two iPhone 4s’s – mine and my wife’s – that each had camera issues as follows: the camera app could be selected, but began to freeze up after taking a photo and then switching to Camera Roll view. After taking a few more photos on each, the camera app would not even stay active – it would freeze and then return to the home page.

Both problems were fixed by deleting about half the images I had stored on each using the photo viewer app and the camera roll album, then doing a full shutdown and restart.

In my wife’s case, there were about 430 still photos and a few videos. In my case, there were about 100 photos, many of which HDR, and several longer videos.

I speculate that the native camera app has a hard-to-debug limitation on the total filesize of images that it can work with. Luckily, the native photo viewer app doesn’t have the same limitation.

My 5s camera stopped working last October. Right after the 1 yr warranty expired!
I reset the phone, updated to IOS 8 at that time, and still not working.
Apple genius bar replaced the camera, with no success.
The only option is to replace the phone with an upgrade, even Apple is not willing to “fix” it.
