Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date Pegged for Q2 by Samsung

The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date is set for sometime in Q2 according to a statement from Samsung today during the announcement of a new LED flash that will appear in the “next Galaxy smartphone.”

Samsung executives are speaking freely about the Samsung Galaxy S5 in interviews over the last several months and the announcement today goes one step further and matches with rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 release date windows.

In the announcement today Samsung Tomorrow writes, “Samsung will start mass producing the new mobile-market LEDs in March, which are likely to then begin appearing in the open market in the second quarter.” which is later followed by confirmation that the new LED flash will appear in, “the next Galaxy smartphone, which is expected to be introduced later this month.”

This is the flash for the next Galaxy smartphone and timing suggests the Galaxy S5 release date window.

The new flash that will appear in the new Galaxy smartphone offers a 165 lux at 1A, minimum CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 80 and according to Samsung it delivers, “quality photos in daylight and at night.”

The announcement comes as a possible Galaxy S5 sample photo appears on Flickr. This potential sample doesn’t reveal much, but it is reportedly from an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5. The photo was spotted by @evleaks.

Samsung stops short of calling the next Galaxy smartphone the Galaxy S5, but after multiple Samsung images show the Samsung Mobile Unpacked 5 event for later this month, including one that teases 9 possible features of the next phone complete with 11 uses of “5”. Samsung is not calling out the Samsung Galaxy S5 in this post, but given all the evidence in the invites and other statements, it’s safe to assume we are talking about the Samsung Galaxy S5.

The inclusion of a Samsung Galaxy S5 release date window in this announcement is a little surprising, but the timing is not. Samsung does not typically announce a new smartphone and sell it a week or two later like Apple. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 releases both arrived about a month after the announcement.

Samsung is preparing an event for February 24th in Barcelona at MWC, the trade show that they just announced the new flash components for and will hold a satellite event in New York City where Gotta Be Mobile will be in attendance. This would suggest a March release timeframe which would put the Galaxy S5 in stores just as the new HTC One aka HTC M8 is announced, but this announcement suggests April is more likely.

Samsung used the first Mobile Unpacked event last year for the Samsung Galaxy S4 announcement and we expect to see the Galaxy S5 on the 24th. Samsung will very likely announce a Galaxy S5 release date for the international model at the event and we expect a U.S. Galaxy S5 release date within a week or two of that date.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date will not take place until the second quarter according to this announcement, which lines up with the rumors of a late April or early May Galaxy S5 release date. Gotta Be Mobile believes the Galaxy S5 release date is in late April, though the actual date is still a moving target. This lines up with a Q2 release and why longer than a month between announcement and release makes sense.

We expect a Samsung Galaxy S5 with a 5.25-inch display, possibly with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, an update processor and a 16MP camera.  Look for Android 4.4.2 with TouchWiz and a new look on board. Rumors suggest more on board storage options and a larger battery.
