Microsoft Rewarding iPhone and Galaxy S2 Owners With Free Lumia 1520
It doesn’t appear as if Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system has convinced droves of users to leave their iPhone or Samsung devices. Clearly, that’s isn’t from a lack of trying though. Just weeks after announcing a similar trade-in deal, the Microsoft Store has sent out text messages inviting users to trade-in their devices for a free Nokia Lumia 1520 or Nokia Lumia 1020.
Text messages about the deal began going out to users who’d subscribed to the deals text messages that Microsoft offers directly to Microsoft Store shoppers earlier today.
The text in its entirety invites users to “Trade in [their] iPhone or Galaxy S2 and get Nokia Lumia 1020 or 1520 FREE with 2-yr contract.” Understandably, the text message’s inclusion of the Galaxy S2 is strange since the latest comparable Samsung flagship is actually the Samsung Galaxy S4.
Whether Microsoft meant for the offer to cover the Galaxy S3 or Galaxy S4 remains a mystery. It’s also unclear which version of the iPhone is included in the deal too. Since the included link only invites users to specify their location GottaBeMobile has reached out to the Microsoft Store for the deal’s specific Terms and Conditions. Users will need to head to their local Microsoft Store to take advantage of the deal.
The message itself does confirm that users will need to sign up for a two-year service agreement before getting the free devices. The deal appears to be exclusive to AT&T as well since both the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1020 are exclusive to that carrier.
Still, its not a bad deal for users who’ve already been eyeing a switch to Windows Phone. Pricing for a new Nokia Lumia 1520 from AT&T starts at $199. The Nokia Lumia 1020 still sells for $99.99. That pricing includes a two-year service agreement too.

The deal does not include the latest S4 because those users will still be under their 2-year contract with ATT. Microsoft needs to offer cheaper phones, and destroy the business model of operators subsidizing phone costs. Maybe Microsoft should acquire T-Mobile!
