Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat Release Details Swirl (Update)

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update is confirmed in the United States but it remains a bit of a mystery in regions outside of the U.S. Rumors continue to point to a Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update in the near future and those rumors have been fueled by a regional arm of Samsung who says that the update will be out by the end of this month.

Weeks ago, Samsung confirmed the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update for the United States. At the time, Samsung USA did not say which carriers would get the update though, days later, Sprint confirmed the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates for arrival later in the future.

Update: Unsurprisingly, it looks like the social media manager at Samsung Arabia was wrong.

Shortly after Samsung USA confirmed the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update, Samsung Poland chimed in and said that while it would be upgrading the Galaxy Note 2 with Android 4.4, it would pass over the Galaxy S3 because it lacked sufficient RAM. The Galaxy S3 in Poland uses 1GB of RAM while the Galaxy S3 in the United States uses 2GB. The Galaxy Note 2 also uses 2GB’s of RAM.

Last week, we saw a leak suggest that the international Galaxy S3, also known as the GT-i9300, would get the Android 4.4 KitKat update in April or May. Early rumors had pointed to March or April. None of the rumors committed to specific dates. Today, the Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 Android 4.4 KitKat update release got a little more specific. Or so it seems.

SamMobile spotted a response on Samsung Arabia’s Facebook page that suggests that the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update will roll out by the end of March. The user clearly asks if the Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 will be getting Android 4.4 and the regional arm thanks the user for his patience and says that the update will land before the end of the month.

While this might seem like good news, there is reason to remain cautious. Samsung’s international roll outs do typically come first though we saw the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update land in the United States before the international roll out. In addition, Samsung’s regional arms have also been wrong about update timing in the past.

Even SamMobile is skeptical. The site, which is notorious for leaking updates early, says that the update has not shown up on Samsung’s servers, something that makes a release inside the month of March unlikely. Possible, but unlikely.

While the date might be off, there is still a good chance that the update will roll out at some point in the future given that it’s landing in the United States. It would be strange to see the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update emerge for users in the United States and nowhere else.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update is expected to be joined by the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update in the future. The Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update is not only confirmed for the U.S. but Australian carrier Optus recently confirmed it for arrival as well. The carrier says that it expects the update to land in April.
