New HTC One Can Survive Water like the Galaxy S5 (Video)

Today HTC officially unveiled the brand new HTC One (M8) smartphone for 2014. Replacing the original One from last year with a new and improved model in many key areas.

Following countless leaks of the hardware, software, specs, and camera, there weren’t too many surprises left when HTC took the stage this afternoon and announced its new phone. Confirming the all new HTC One has a 5-inch 1080p HD display, stunning aluminum design, and a new Duo Camera (two sensors) system on the rear. One thing HTC didn’t talk about though, that their competitors are focusing on, is it being somehow water resistant.

Now, HTC is in no way claiming the new HTC One is waterproof. This is not a specification or a feature that was mentioned in the press event. There’s no IP67 dust and water “resistant” rating like the Galaxy S5, but a video has just surfaced moments after the phones announcement, already testing it out in water and it handles the elements just fine. See for yourself below.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is one of a few Android smartphones that is truly water resistant. Following Sony’s lead the new Galaxy S5 has a coating on the internals to keep it safe from accidental water drops, a seal on the battery door, and even a flap covering the micro-USB charging port to keep water from ruining your electronic device.

While this is a feature many have come to love, simply because consumers never know when an accident will happen, not everyone is one board yet. We’ve heard rumors the upcoming LG G3 will also be IP67 dust and water resistant like the Galaxy S5, but HTC made no mention of this today. That being said, after nearly 2 hours in a sink full of water the phone was just fine.

You probably noticed a few screen glitches at one point near the end, but this YouTuber claims after a quick moment to dry her off, the screen being finicky quickly dissipated and the new HTC One works perfect. Even after sitting in water for hours. Pretty impressive right?

One of the key selling points of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 is the water resistant feature, but this shows an HTC One that can handle a similar situation without being harmed. Of course, IP67 means the Galaxy S5 can survive a deeper drop in water than a few inches in a sink, but this is one thing worth keeping your eyes on.

We don’t recommend you drop your own brand new HTC One in a sink of water, but if an accident happens, rest assured knowing it could make it out unscathed.

Saw bubbles coming out from bottom of phone which means there is ingress. Or was it just air expansion inside the device dus to heat from the battery?

Whichever the case, does the phone still work or has it brokndown since?
