Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 & Android 4.3 Updates Hit Snags

Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update, a Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update and two Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates have hit snags as updated roll out schedules now show delays for users on two carriers in particular.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update started rolled out in October of last year but the roll out continues in some parts of the world, even as Samsung deploys the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update.

Today, we’ve seen two carriers update their Android update schedules and both contain word on Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 updates. Optus stood firm today and says that it still plans to push out its Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update in late March or early April. It says that the update will finally bring Galaxy Gear support to owners of its Galaxy S4.

Telstra, another Australian carrier, says that its update has been pulled by Samsung due to issues that Galaxy S4 Cat 4 users are having with the new update. The carrier says that its “expecting a fix to be submitted to Telstra for testing in the coming days although we don’t have firm timelines yet.” This is yet another blow to the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 roll out which has been plagued by issues since it first arrived last year.

The Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update isn’t the only Galaxy S4 update that has hit a snag. Optus also has revised its Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update release. Instead of a release in early to mid-April, the carrier now says that it has no ETA for the release of the update and that as of right now, it has yet to receive the update for testing.

This could mean that Optus Galaxy S4 owners are several weeks away, at least, from an Android 4.4 KitKat update. It also could mean that Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates, which were also planned for April but have yet to be tested, could see delays similar to the Galaxy S4’s.

Unfortunately, the delays aren’t limited to the Galaxy S4. Optus has pushed back release dates for its Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates as well. Instead of late March or early April, the carrier now says that the updates will be deployed in mid-to-late April. These updates are currently undergoing testing in Optus’ labs.

These delays will prolong the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean roll outs and Optus’ backtracking with its Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat release means that there is a very good chance that we could see that update roll out long after its original release window.

The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean roll out finished up in the U.S. back in December. However, the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out is ongoing. The Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is still missing in action and the carrier still hasn’t shed any light on its release. Its rivals, including AT&T, have already pushed out the update.

Smaller carriers including C Spire Wireless, Cricket Wireless and MetroPCS still haven’t pushed out their Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates either.

What does it matter to the US that Australia has not received the update when we have if you have AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint, and in 7 years, site a time that Verizon was ahead of other US cellular providers. I was with Verizon for 6 years and I can not refer to a time that Verizon rolled Gingerbread, Honeycomb, ICS, Jelly Bean or as you’re pointing out now Kit-Kat before the providers I mentioned. Hell, it took them 2-3 months after T-Mobile and AT&T was selling the Galaxy S4 starting May 1, 2013. Verizon was supposed to start selling it July 24 but did not arrive until August.

So much delay in introducing these updates in Galaxy S4. Well not an issue that’s the major reason that I have purchased qi enabled Nexus 5 device in last year so that any updated Android version get easily available on the device rather than waiting for long time according to the different carriers.

One thing to note is the ANT+ support is not present on the Optus Android 4.3 update for Samsung Galaxy S4. Apparently with all the Optus bloatwear it wouldn’t fit. Not happy Jan :(
