How to Make Your Android Faster in 3 Steps (Video)

Published

on

Android smartphones and tablets are pretty fast these days, but if you’re looking for an easy way to make your Android smartphone or tablet even faster, we have you covered.

Now there’s plenty of ways to change and speed up Android. Most of which requires 3rd party apps or software, rooting (Android version of Jailbreak) your phone, installing custom ROMs, or even hacking and overclocking your device. We’re not going to cover any of that. For the beginner looking for a simple way to speed up your phone in seconds, with no knowledge or custom apps required, below is a quick video on what and how to do it.

Most Android phones over the past year or so have powerful dual and quad-core processors, 2GB of RAM like old laptop from only a few years ago, and are blazing fast. However, there’s still millions of mid-range smartphones and tablets, not to mention even the fastest high end Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One can always be better.

Playing around in the hidden developer menu on Android smartphones and tablets there’s a dead simple setting to control the animations and transitions. Think of the neat fade away effect while going from settings menu to settings menu, or the animation as you open and close apps, or even the application tray. They all look neat, but don’t serve too big of a purpose. All we’ve done in the video above (and instructions below) is turn down, or disable the animation effects for a faster experience.

Instructions

First you’ll probably need to gain access to the hidden developer menu in settings on your phone. This is just a few taps away, and extremely simple. The video explains how, or just check out the link below.

Essentially all you need to do is head into settings > about phone > and tap seven (7) times on the “build number” portion of the about phone menu. This will enable the hidden developer menu, and now you can easily speed up your Android with three simple steps.

Speed Up Your Android

Once you’ve enabled the developer options menu on your Android phone or tablet you’ll need to head into the menu and change three options. To make things simple, we’ll go through all the steps once more with screenshots.

Head to Settings > Developer options > animations & transitions

Tap Settings and scroll down to Developer options, tap that and scroll halfway down to the three animation options you see in the screenshot below. You’ll want to change these three, and only these three. By default most phones are set at 1x or 1.5x, and we’re going to be lowering the animations to .5x to speed things up. Some users may opt to disable them completely, but keeping it at .5x still leaves Android looking pretty and smooth, while being faster than ever.

Windows animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale will be the three steps you’ll be doing. Tap each one in the box shown above, and in the popup simply select “.5x” for each one. This will cut the animation and transitions your smartphone is doing by half, and make it run nearly twice as fast.

Some users may opt to disable these all together by selecting none or “off” on all three settings, which is fine, but we prefer a little style and effects while still being fast.

That’s it, you’re all done! You may want to reboot your phone to make sure all settings are final, but you should be able to see and experience the results immediately.

Noticeable improvement on my GN2. You do need to re-start. Good tip Cory!

Yes, absolutely restart the phone after enabling this so things like the app drawer and screen lock animation accept the animation changes as well.
