Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat Release Hits Snag

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update has been rolling out since January but it still hasn’t landed on every Galaxy Note 3 on the planet. No, there are still plenty of missing Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates and today, one of those missing updates hit a release date snag.

In January, Samsung started pushing out the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update. The update, which initially moved out slowly to Galaxy Note 3 owners around the world, picked up the pace in February and March and now resides on a number of big name variants around the world including four of the five Galaxy Note 3 models in the United States. Only the Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update remains missing.

Despite the rapid roll out, there are still a number of Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates that are missing in action and one of those Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates has seen its release date downgraded by its carrier.

Initially, Australian carrier Optus said that it would be pushing out its Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update in early-to-mid April. Today, the carrier issued an update to its Android update schedule and it now says that it currently has no release date ETA for its version of the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update.

In fact, the carrier says that it still hasn’t received the update in for testing. Samsung passes along updates to its carrier partners and Optus still doesn’t have access to the update several months after it was first released. The testing process typically takes a couple of weeks at least which means that a Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat release date on Optus is no longer set for April.

Once the carrier receives the update from Samsung, we expect it to deliver an updated look at the software’s timing. It’s just not clear when that might be.

The Australia-based carrier isn’t the only one missing a Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update. Telstra and Vodafone, two of its Australian counterparts still haven’t rolled out their versions of the update though Vodafone says that it currently has Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat testing scheduled.

In the U.S., Verizon is the only Galaxy Note 3 carrier that has yet to deliver the software. The carrier still hasn’t issued any specific details about the update and Galaxy Note 3 owners will likely stay in the dark all the way up until the update’s official release date.

All of these missing Android 4.4 KitKat updates should fall in line with the Galaxy Note 3 updates that have landed since January. That means that they should be focused on delivering Android 4.4 KitKat features and carrier-specific enhancements and fixes rather than Samsung Galaxy S5 software features.

Samsung still hasn’t confirmed Galaxy S5 software features for its older devices though the company historically has outfitted its former flagships with features from its current flagship models.

This update is a major step backwards (read “disaster”) for me. 1) With KitKat, the phone can no longer read my [older] bluetooth keyboard, which worked well on 4.3. 2) Apparently with KitKat I cannot save files to my storage card anymore–some of the buzz is that there is a “new protocol for SD cards?” Maybe someone out there can help me with this. 3) It is incorrect that you now “have the option” to choose a default messaging app. That option has always been there. Rather, you are forced to choose a default every time you open a messaging app, so if you (like I) used to enjoy using different messaging apps for different purposes, you are now forced to change the default in order to even use a specific app. 4) My old Quickoffice Pro program will no longer save documents to either the cloud or the SD card, so it is now useless. This may not be Kitkat–it could also be Google deliberately murdering this program (it bought the company, made the program free, and then changed it to work only on Google drive). But since the OS is Android and Google=Android and it all happened when I installed the KitKat OS, I think the buck still stops at the same place ultimately. The one gain for me is that it does seem that the GPS problem is fixed. ATT, please address these problems asap!
