LG G2 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Continues to Arrive for More Users

The LG G2 Android 4.4 KitKat update is arriving for more users in the United States this week, as well as throughout the UK, as the company continues to update its flagship smartphone to the latest version of Google’s Android operating system.

The update process to Android 4.4.2 KitKat for the LG G2 has been somewhat tiresome for many owners patiently awaiting its arrival, but LG delivered throughout the month of March to almost all regions in the US, and this week Verizon is finally enjoying the same update.

LG initially promised an update would arrive sometime near the end of March which would deliver Android 4.4.2 KitKat to the LG G2, and that slowly arrived all month long. Starting with AT&T in February, then arriving for other carriers in the US. Verizon and some UK carriers are now finally getting the same update this week as well.

After failing to hit the “End of March” timeline many Verizon Wireless LG G2 owners were getting frustrated by the lack of updates, details, or even information, but thankfully that all ended last week. After months of waiting and silence, the LG G2 Android 4.4 KitKat update for Verizon Wireless finally arrived, although not through traditional means.

Rather than being delivered as an over the air software update right on owners devices, the Verizon LG G2 Android 4.4 KitKat update was only available from the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant tool on a desktop PC or laptop. While it was nice that owners would finally have the latest software, not everyone has a Windows PC, nor the time to connect to a computer and download all the required programs before getting the latest software upgrade.

However, for those with a Verizon LG G2, we’re happy to confirm the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update is indeed rolling out over the air as we speak. Meaning users should have received a notification this weekend, or in the next few days, prompting them to download the latest software for their device. This is Android 4.4.2 KitKat, and along with it comes plenty of changes, improvements, and performance boosts.

We’ve received word from multiple readers that this actually arrived this morning, rather than over the weekend, which is a sign that as expected this will be a staged rollout. The update won’t arrive for everyone at once to ensure there’s no major problems before a wide release, and will eventually hit all smartphone users over the next few days. Our own LG G2 received Android 4.4.2 KitKat Monday, and users can expect the same to be delivered soon.

This means all major US carriers now have received Android 4.4.2 KitKat on the LG G2, and the few remaining international carriers will need to do the same. This week we also have good news for those in the UK, as the update is also readily available for those with a G2. Oddly enough the LG G2 KitKat update in the UK has been available through LG’s own support tool for months, it’s just now starting to arrive over the air for multiple users.

If you’re an LG G2 owner in the UK and have yet to update your smartphone to the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat, you can also expect the update to arrive this week. Good news all around, and hopefully these speedy software updates continue from LG.

What to Expect

The LG G2 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update delivers tons of new features, but also severely impacts performance and battery life, for the better. The G2 launched with Android 4.2 even while Android 4.3 had been available for months and months, so the update to KitKat is quite big. Skipping Android 4.3, 4.4, 4.4.1 and going right to Android 4.4.2 users should see a huge difference all around.

With such a major jump in Android versions the LG G2 will be significantly faster, as Android 4.4 delivered tons of tweaks to improve performance. Users can expect a new white font and notification pulldown bar, a better keyboard with Emoji support, better Google Hangouts experience, improved security, and longer battery life.

LG Mobile released a video earlier this year showing exactly what users could expect regarding performance, and it shows just how much faster and more smooth the LG G2 will be after the update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat completes.

While that’s just a small sample, users can expect plenty of other minor changes and improvements. Of course, some updates do cause other issues to arise, but so far no major reports have surfaced from any carriers regarding issues. Meaning the update should be a smooth process with no ill effects.

As a reminder, the LG G2 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update on Verizon and elsewhere is a staged and gradual rollout. If you haven’t received it today don’t panic, as it should be arriving sometime over the course of the next few days.

Just got LG-G2 upgrade request tonight, April 22, 2014, for KitKat 4.4.2.. Installed it and have problems already. Homescreen backlight is dimmer and not adjustable. It makes screen harder to read. I have already emailed LG asking why they did this. My phone is harder to use than before. This is Not an improvement. Jim

    • Brian Green says

Jim I ran into the same issue too. I ended up modifying the display settings disabling the “Auto – Set brightness manually regardless of light level”.

    • SZ says

I have the same exact issue. Screen is horribly dim!!! What happened??! Auto brightness at 100% is not as bright as it was prior to this update. Screen takes forever to wake up…

  2. Sarah niebuhr says

I completely agree. My phone automatically updated yesterday and its now the biggest piece of shit there is. It’s dim, there’s a terrible delay, it won’t send texts without me restarting every time I want to send them, my alarms do not work in the least bit, constantly freezes… I could go on… worst thing happen to my phone.

    • Raymond Greenwood says

Mine updated this morning aside from changing the notification Icons I didn’t notice a change at all. The battery life and everything else seem unchanged what was supposed to be different that was so major?

    • shellrie says

Mine is a pile now too. It’s even really difficult to answer phone calls because the screen doesn’t light up at all anymore giving me the option (takes a long time to light up even hitting the power button on back. I have charged my battery 4 times today (fully) and I’ve only had this stupid update since 9:30 this morning. My amazing phone is ruined.. =( Texts wont go thru on wifi or data. cant download from play store. knock on is dead. the lag is beyond incredible. swype is worthless. i have to type each letter and wait 20 seconds between them for the phone to figure out what it is supposed to do because if i go any faster, it starts pulling words out of thin air that have nothing even remotely close to what i was originally trying to type then i have to backspace letter at a time waiting 20 seconds between presses or it just freezes up.
up until this morning i could charge my phone from dead to 100% in 1.5 hours and it would last from 6 am until midnight and have life left in it. it has now been plugged in charging for 3 hours and its at 18%. My computer no longer recognizes it using its stock cable and the wireless storage will no longer turn on so i can backup my hundreds of pictures. im not doing a factory reset until i can save all my photos. I don’t know what to do. This is maddening.

      • Vanessa says

The worst thing to ever happen to my phone. It’s a big bulky dinosaur now. Please note I am on my second replacement. I have done factory reset- but to be honest with you. It won’t be your first or last factory reset. It will work perfect once you do it, however, give it a few days. The moment you pick it up and it’s overheating, get ready for the nightmare to start again until you do another factory reset. My phone got so bad, it was decreasing charging while I was trying to use it.

Issues range from: phone not lighting up when someone calls, not being able to send or receive text unless I constantly restart, alarm clock stop working, overheating while not being us or on standby, battery draining while not using, apps not working properly, unable to install apps, charging taking more than 5 hours- unless the phone is completely turned off it will take a two hour charge, turning black or to the standby mode while using it, hard to get in and out of phone with the security lock, The list goes on and on and on. It will not allow you to factory reset unless the phone has some juice in it, otherwise- if you are down to 30% or less and sick and tired of doing this – just note factory reset is not an option until it has more charge in it. When I set up the second replacement, I will not do the KITKATE UPDATE- NO MATTER HOW ANNOYED I GET WITH THE MESSAGE. Unless they force it, this is the worst thing ever.

  3. Ap says

My phone updated this morning. It is KILLING my BATTERY LIFE….Looks like SCREEN is using 44% of battery….not timing out even though set for 5 minutes. Any suggestions to fix this? I use my phone’s alarm to wake me up for work…if battery goes dead..I am screwed!!!

Also…Uninstalled Swiftkey after the 4.4.2 update on my Verizon Lg G2 and rebooted phone. STILL getting the pop-up messages: Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped AND Unfortunately Google play services has stopped.

    This IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

  4. Cory Gunther says

You guys can manually control brightness in settings, but that’s odd LG would mess with that so much in an update like this.

And Ap, or anyone else having major issues. A factory data reset may help, but will erase all data and you’ll have to reinstall apps and such.

    • ap says

Thanks Cory. However, I do not have time to reinstall all of my stuff. I don’t think we should have to do a factory data reset anyway due to the update. Wish I had my old version back. All I really want now is to have those stupid pop-ups go away!!! I need to use internet on my phone and they are a real pain in the a**.

      • Debra Ray says

DO NOT DO THE FACTORY RESET! IT DOES NOT WORK. I was so thrilled to get my lg g2 a few months ago, BEST PHONE EVER! Not anymore. The upgrade has ruined what was once the perfect phone. My light is now dim, you cannot fix it, I spent over 2 hours on the phone last night with Verizon, they said, ‘you’re pretty much screwed’. Why would lg mess with something that was already perfect…. ugh, I hate this phone now, hate it.

        • andie says

Debra … I feel your pain. I just got my LG G2 a few month ago also. BEST phone ever…until this stupid update. Like you said….”The upgrade has ruined what was once the perfect phone.” Looks like today things have gotten worse. It shut-off by itself at 4:30AM and keeps rebooting when I try to tap on things. The damn pop-ups come up so fast after I hit “ok” that I can’t even use the dial pad to make a phone call. AND Battery lost 50% since in 5 hours and the phone was not even in use….says phone used 31% of battery power…HOW COULD THAT BE WHEN IT SHUT ITSELF OFF AT 4:30AM !?!?!?! THIS ABSOLUTELY S U C K S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Jennifer says

Received the update last night and my phone is horrible! Terrible delay, virtual keyboard is getting stuck, battery is draining, text notification Shiites that I have a new text, but I really do not, and the backwards button gets stuck so I’ve had to rewrite this 3 times, because I’ve pressed backward to fix a spelling error. I loved my LG G2 before this happened. what can we do???

  6. Jeremy says

Got my update first thing this morning, and I can no longer use voice activated dialing. The voice prompt opens, but it doesn’t respond to my voice at all. When sending a text message the voice-to-text function works fine, though.
Battery life seems to be suffering as well, and I also had an application hang which has never before exhibited this behavior.

  7. Jamie says

Update erased half of my contacts and battery life is draining at rapid speed. I got this phone partly for the battery life and now it’s draining quicker than my old phone.

  8. andie says

WONDERING….Are these problems an LG issue or ANDROID issue or VERIZON issue??? Have to find out so we can post our problems to the right place.

If those damn pop-ups don’t go away soon, I think my brand new LG G2 is going to be tossed out of the window!!!!

    Cory…can you help us????

  9. shellrie says

Please how can we un-do this??? My battery is getting worse and worse as the day progresses. After charging for 3 hours and only making it to 20ish %, now it has dropped to 15% WHILE IT’S STILL PLUGGED IN and I haven’t touched it. Also my computer no longer recognizes the phone, won’t install any drivers and the wireless storage that i had set up won’t even turn on on the phone. I can’t back up any of my photos to do a factory reset to see if that will help. HELP ME!!!!! PLEASE!!!! I’ve only had the phone for 3 weeks and it has been pure bliss. I even stopped using my tablet in favor of using the phone for everything because it was so awesome. Now it’s worthless.

  10. Nathan says

Updated my Verizon LG G2 last night. Been terrible ever since. Took 4 hours to charge 40%, and its gone down 10% in 20 minutes. Also same issues as others. to send texts have to restart the phone, swype is laggy. Overall experience has become very choppy and buggy. Everything was working great before the update.

  11. Jenna Kim says

I have all of your problems, I also have severe overheating, get this: even when I’m not even touching the phone at all.

I love my phone because evenwith all the new ones coming out my phone can still compete with them and easily win, but now the 2 hour battery life is terribly shameful.

  12. Alex says

Piece of shit update. I have to restart my phone constantly just to have calls and texts work. Incredibly frustrating when I’m expecting important calls that I’m not confident will get through to me. I will do everything in my power to resist updates in the future for as long as possible if this is the kind of shit that they feel is an improvement.

  13. Tim says

Terrible update — battery life has gone from 4 days to about 4-6 hours — I loved this phone – now I don’t want it in this condition. Is there any way to fix it????? Can I revert back to the old OS? It worked so well — this upgrade sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Tim says

The two major issues I had were massive battery drain and a dim screen. I was able to get the phone almost back to where it was by doing a factory reset and turning off the automatic brightness. The battery is now draining at “normal” rate and the phone isn’t hot anymore. Still wish I could just go back to jellybean – I was very happy with the LG G2 before the update!

  14. khiry says

Not to brag but my phone is fine. Verizon lg g2. I can still control brightness in the notification bar though I keep my screen at 60 anyway. Its just as smooth and it’s even harder to get the phone to stumble jumping through apps. Hopefully this gets fixed for everyone else because I can definitely say the phone is better. Battery still bad ass. Maybe even better. After 4 hours of slacker streaming I’m at about 70%.

    • andie says

WOW….YOU ARE LUCKY !!!! Have you done a reboot yet? Rebooting seems to trigger problems. Can you tell us what apps you have? Maybe we have/don’t have something that you do. We are all so desperate!

      • khiry says

Lol no I woke up middle of the night. Did the update then charged it. No rebooting other than the auto restart. Apps are dolphin browser, foodler, slacker radio, xbox smartglass, a few games and random apps, shopping list etc. No apps that I’d consider a game changer. Its weird there’s so many problems but lg has been known for issues.

  15. Craig says

I am having battery issues also. Got the update this morning and immediately noticed the battery life draining. A shame since that was one of my favorite things about this phone. This has to a a buggy app or setting that can be adjusted to fix this but it seems to be related to the display. Any help???

  16. Kaysha says

Update is completely worthless!! Got this phone around Christmas, and Im already contemplating on getting a new one, I cant deal with this so called “update” !

    • Mark says

The update has cause problems on my LG G2 it heats up very short battery life and hangs up something terrible. Is there anyway I can go back to Jellybean. Help – I mean HELP!!!

  17. Mark says

I was so happy with my LG G2 before the update. Now I have reset the phone a second time and I’m afraid to install any apps on it. The battery life was about 4 hours in sleep mode with nothing but email active. I only had two 3rd party apps installed. If it does the same thing without any 3rd party apps installed, I’m sending it back for repairs unless I can roll back the operating system. How can something like this be missed. It’s terrible!

  18. Jen C says

Is anyone else having weird pop up/notification issues? I don’t know which app needs a fix and is causing the error, but the black box with white text that pops up for notifications now pops up with “7936″ every time I switch screens since the update.

Also having dimness issues. This is awful.

  19. andie says

Here’s a new issue that popped up today. “IncallUI isn’t responding. Do you want to close it?” Gives me a choice of “Wait” or “Ok”. Happened at 6:22AM after I was done speaking to someone on my phone. Seems like phone is now STUCK. Cannot tap on either choice. Going to try to do a reboot and see what happens. This is DAY #3 of me trying to get my Verizon Lg G2 working correctly after the damn update. I really don’t want to do a hard reset….but I might just have to try it. I AM SOOOOOOO ANGRY!!!! This was the best phone I ever had until 4.4.2 update. ARRRRRRGGGGHHHH. Seems like there is no real help/answer for the problems we are all having and I have been on a ton of different forums.

  20. Mark says

A hard reset got me back to normal – had to install all my songs, videos, and pic, but phone is working ok now. I just don’t know if I can add any apps that’s what slow me down on the second hard reset.
Also the 3rd hard reset only took about 10 minutes total, where as the first two took hours and on the second hard reset camera would not work. So if your hard reset takes more than 15 minutes or so, it’s likely they it did not rest correctly due to the original upgrade problems.
I’m going to install an app tomorrow and hope everything stays positive. It’s been OK now for over 8 hours so tomorrow if it’s still zippy I’ll give it a try and let everyone know the outcome.

I hope the developer is listening and that everyone having a problem makes a post online.

    • andie says

How is your phone today? I am ready to do a hard reset….this is day #4 of the kitkat update ruining my brand new verizon lg g2 which was totally awesome before 4.4.2. I hope it doesn’t take too long to do.

  21. Josh says

I’m definitely experiencing a lot of drag with my LG G2. Heavy delay at times (not all the times) between key strokes. Loved the phone prior to the update. Also, the battery does drain considerably ONLY when wi-fi is on. It’ll drain completely from 100 to 0 in 2 hours, and will take 5hr to charge from 10% to 100%. When wi-fi is off (using 4G) the phone drains normally and charges extremely fast. im open to factory resetting, but it’s annoying to have to reload all my videos, pictures, and get new registration keys for new apps.

is anyone else experiencing the same things with the charging?

    • Mark says

Yes all you mentioned and more. However after the 3rd reset which as stated above was the only true good reset it appears OK. I’ve loaded two apps so far and still OK. I have read that a few apps are causing heavy drain on system, so it’s wise to read the poor reviews before loading apps. As long as battery and performance aren’t mentioned as being reason for poor rating it’s likely safe to load. Some apps may not play nice with the OS upgrade and may need to be upgraded. I’ll report back after awhile and some more app additions.

  22. andie says

Well…..I caved in and did a hard reset today. We shall see what happens over the next day or so. Seems like the pop-up thing is gone. We post how it is working over the next day or so.

  23. Josh says

What would it take 3 times? Shouldnt it go factory ready after 1 reset?
Also PLAY downloads are taking forever (still have the new operating system).
The phone will not connect as a drive to my PC, to be able to transfer all the media temporarily. So im not sure what i would do back up my files for when i possibly reset.

  24. Josh says

Has anyone found a way around the phone not coming up as a drive when it’s plugged into the PC? I need it to be a drive to transfer media b4 i reset.

  25. Missi says

Well at first my battery life was great. It was the reason I got this phone. Now it sucks not even a whole day for a charge. When are they going to fix this problem?
